If you are filing for divorce, it could take much longer than you think. There is a backlog in family court of about four months, according to the Court Executive Officer, Michael Roddy.  Sherman McEachern found that out as he was going through his divorce process. He and his soon to be ex-wife filed for divorce in October. McEachern said it should have been finalized in April. When he tried to find out why divorce documents were not mailed back to him yet, he learned it was going to take much longer. “I called the clerk’s office. That was the first time, I realized they were telling me we’re eight to ten months behind,” McEachern said.  It’s affecting him both personally and financially. “I can’t change health insurance until I have the signed divorce decree. She doesn’t want to use my health insurance because we’re separated, getting a divorce, so I’m paying for coverage no one’s using,” McEachern said. “We’re hearing a lot of complaints from people,” Roddy said. “They want to get divorced.” Roddy said this fiscal year, they’ve had to make million in budget cuts on top of a million deficit.  “That’s a million dollar hit to the court. We lost about 100 employees and we had a hiring freeze,” Roddy said.  In small claims court, Roddy said it takes about a year to set your case for trial.  When asked who is at fault for the backlog, Roddy said it started with the recession. “The recession hit California very hard, hit the courts very hard, and we have not bounced back to that level,” Roddy said. “It’s just very frustrating because every day, I’m still being tied to a marriage that we both have left from,” McEachern said. He added that it is “disheartening” that people pay for a process and the service isn’t being delivered. Roddy said they are hoping for more money in this next fiscal year, which they can use for personnel. He is expecting a flood of new orders in family court as the new tax law could affect divorce cases, with the changes in alimony payments. 2076

Experts weigh in on staying safe when heading to your polling place. The first piece of advice is to have a plan."The example I would give would be going to the grocery store. That's something that caused people a lot of anxiety when we first were dealing with the pandemic back in March, and I think for many of us, it’s becoming relatively routine. It's not how we shopped for groceries back in January but it's something that we’ve learned to do. I think voting can be the same," said Dr. Jay Varkey, an infectious disease doctor and Associate Professor at Emory University.Dr. Varkey says to know the COVID-19 transmission rates in your community, as well as your own personal risk, if you were to become infected with COVID-19."To give some specific examples, masking is absolute, and I would want to make sure that there is a universal mask mandate in place and not just those that are going to cast their votes but workers as well," said Dr. Varkey.Dr. Varkey says wearing a mask that has at least two layers and wearing it properly is key. Also, ensure your polling place allows you to socially distance from other voters. Dr. Varkey says standing more than 6 feet away from others is preferred. Also, it’s great if your polling place is keeping doors and windows open to increase airflow."The other thing, and I know this is hard to do, the more we can actually limit the amount of talking, or certainly yelling or singing or anything else going on, is the more we can reduce our chances of passing these infectious droplets that can aerosolize, and that tends to really occur when people are talking. Masks reduce that risk, but we can really reduce it more by, well, talking less," says Dr. Varkey.In Madison, Wisconsin, poll workers will be ensuring voters are socially-distanced and frequently disinfecting all voting booths, pens and other frequently touched items. City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl has been working closely with their local health department."We will have plexiglass glass set up for stations where poll workers have to interact with voters within 6 feet of each other, and for other poll workers who are not at those stations, they’ll have access to face shields if they like," said Witzel-Behl.Poll workers are also being told to follow a strict set of health guidelines in order to volunteer."If they've had a fever within the last few days or taken a fever-reducing medication in the past few days, they can’t work at the poll. If they've had any COVID-19 symptoms or been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or had a cough within the past week they can’t work at the polls," said Witzel-Behl.So, do you need to bring a container of disinfecting wipes with you to the polls?"I put the priority first on the masks and keeping your distance but that last part on how to take a relatively safe activity, like voting and make it extra safe, there’s two things I would bring with me into the voting booth. In a security policy that has been implemented in many stadiums and arenas around the country, large bags will soon be banned inside Cinemark's movie theaters, the company has announced. The ban will go into effect on Thursday at all of its theaters. Cinemark is the parent company of chains such as Rave Motion Pictures, Century Theatres, CineArts and Tinseltown. Bags larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches will not be permitted. Exceptions may be made for medical equipment and diaper bags. Cinemark said there will not be anywhere to check bags. The chain also said that the company reserves the right to inspect all bags entering its theaters. A Century Theatre, which is owned by Cinemark, was the scene of a mass shooting in July 2012, when 12 were killed and 58 were wounded by a gunman. Survivors and families of the victims sued Cinemark claiming the company did not take adequate safety and security precaution. A US federal judge then threw out most of the claims against Cinemark in 2013.  1078

(KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza.The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage.
