SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel. It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County leaders and members of the San Diego Foundation on Thursday announced the start of a new initiative that invests in community-led efforts looking to increase racial equity and generational wealth for Black San Diegans.The Black Community Investment Fund already has more than million attached to it -- funding community leaders are looking to share with organizations within the Black community.Mark Stuart, president and CEO of the San Diego Foundation, said, “Decades and decades the Black community has been held back in San Diego and not of their own doing, it’s by others.”To be considered for a grant, a nonprofit organization must meet one of four pillars.The first being education, as they are looking for projects that address systemic educational challenges in schools. Some of this funding will be used for scholarship opportunities.The second pillar is employment. Grants will be given to projects that support workforce training programs and help pay for paid internships. They want to help drive diversity in different career fields.The third pillar is entrepreneurship, as they’re looking for organizations that will help mentor and financially support new businesses.The last pillar is housing, with the hopes that money will go to organizations that will help members of the Black community buy homes.“Redlining in San Diego happened in 1936. It was outlawed decades later, but families are still feeling those effects of where they live and where they can apply for mortgages and put down their roots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Regis Philbin, the long-time talk show host who holds the Guiness Book world record for most hours on television, returned to his roots Wednesday with a visit to 10News."This was the beginning of it all," Philbin said upon beginning his tour. "It really was."Philbin was briefly a news anchor in San Diego when Channel 10, then known as KOGO, approached him about taking over as anchor of the 6pm and 11pm news.READ: Remembering Regis Philbin's ties to San Diego television history"I said 'Well you know, I'll do anything for you, but I want to do a show on Saturday night.' So that's how it all started.""The Regis Philbin Show" aired live from 11:30pm-1:00am every Saturday night. It was filmed in the same studio 10News still uses for its newscasts today.Philbin acted as his own booker, writer, and producer. "It was only one person. Regis had no one," he joked."You think he had four guys like you? He had to do it himself!"The format of "The Regis Philbin Show" included an opening chat, interviews with celebrities, and interaction with the audience, all elements which would become hallmarks of his future network shows.Philbin lured many of the top celebrities to San Diego to make appearances, including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are asking the public for help identifying the person they believe stabbed a man to death in Pacific Beach last week.Police say the suspect was engaged in a fight with a 55-year-old man outside the 7-Eleven store at 4340 Mission Boulevard, when he stabbed the victim several times. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene.Surveillance footage of the suspect was released this week. The suspect is described as a 20- to 30-year-old black male, about 5'8" to 5'10" tall, and was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and a black hat at the time of the stabbing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County recorded its first death of the flu season this week, a 52-year-old woman.County health officials say the woman had underlying medical conditions and it's not known if she had been vaccinated or not."Any death is tragic. Our condolences go out to the individual’s family," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "This death serves as an unfortunate reminder of the importance of getting a flu shot."RELATED: Hand sanitizer stations part of San Diego's?plan to combat flu virusIn the week ending Nov. 3, San Diego County recorded 26 lab-confirmed cases of influenza. So far this season, the county has seen 155 total cases, compared to 383 this time last season.Last season, a total of 342 people died due to complications from the flu, including two children. County health officials recommend everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. Vaccinations generally take about two weeks for immunity to develop.In addition, residents should make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and often, use hand sanitizer, and stay home if they are sick. 1128
