BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Monday started its first reading of a draft amendment to the Environmental Protection Law.

Construction on 4.2 million affordable housing units was basically completed in the January-August after pooling a total investment of 820 billion yuan.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) held a meeting on pest control with officials from the provinces of Hunan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong and Sichuan, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Monday in Changsha, capital of Hunan.

"Danish politicians have talked about exporting our welfare technology for a long time. This means equipment for old people's homes and hospitals, and tools which makes life easier for the elderly and for those who work with them," said Christina Boutrup, author of "China Sweet and Sour", a book on Danish companies' experiences in China.

Currently located some 90 km north of Taipei, the typhoon's center is moving northwest towards the Chinese mainland at an estimated speed of 23 km per hour, with sustained winds reaching a maximum speed of 90 km per hour at the center, the agency said.
