SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students struggling silently with hunger and homelessness might be surprised to find out they're not alone.A CSU-wide study found that 40 percent of its students don't know where their next meal is coming from, and 10 percent don't have a stable place to sleep.It's an issue San Diego State University is working to tackle.This week they held the campuses first Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week on campus. On Tuesday they held a resource fair and on Wednesday a mass-enrollment for CalFresh, the federal program which provides food benefits to low-income applicants.“It’s hard enough as it is being a student and to compound that with being hungry or dealing with housing and security, it really hits me," said Sarah Feteih, an SDSU student getting her masters in social work.Feteih is also an intern with the campus Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT), which works to tackle these issues on campus every day.“We’re encountering students that are sleeping in their cars because they can’t afford to live anywhere else, or they don’t know where their next meal is going to come from because they’re choosing between paying for their textbooks or paying for their groceries that week," said Feteih.Over a dozen county workers were on campus helping students enroll in CalFresh. The process was streamlined, getting students in-and-out within a half-hour and allowing them to bypass the required phone interview.“I think the real stress comes from the fact that I can't eat right," said SDSU senior, Calvin Yeh-Tinetti. "I'm definitely buying a lot of food that are canned foods, which are probably not the healthiest but are really cheap.”Yeh-Tinetti was one of the dozens of students who applied for CalFresh on Wednesday.   1772

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a mother and daughter killed by a YouTuber in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 805 filed a lawsuit this week against the teenager’s estate, the City of San Diego, and the County of San Diego. Eighteen-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet, drove his McLaren the wrong way on the freeway in August 2018, killing Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana. The sports car collided with the family’s SUV, which burst into flames. In their lawsuit, Aileen’s father Miguel Pizarro and son Dominic Pizarro cited the County and City for negligence resulting in death. The lawsuit cites an incident the day before the crash, during which the San Diego County Psychiatric Emergency Response Team responded to a call claiming Heitmann was “screaming, paranoid, and delusional”. A psychiatrist, Dr. Mary Rusher, told police she had evaluated Heitmann and he was “a danger to himself and to others and must be immediately detained on a California Welfare & Institutions Code 5150 hold,” the suit stated. Rusher also told a police dispatcher Heitmann had displayed manic symptoms and appeared paranoid, delusional, out of control, and threatened to harm his mother in preceding days, according to the court document. “Police left the home without any evaluation of Trevor’s condition, or notifying PERT, if they were not part of same (PERT),” the lawsuit says. The suit claims the police officers were not exercising their authority to place Heitmann on a 5150 hold in accordance with the law. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego could be closing as part of an effort to integrate women into the Marines.MCRD has been in San Diego for about 100 years, but it currently does not have facilities specifically for female Marines.According to a Military.com report, Marine Corps officials are looking at other options in order to meet the integration mandate from Congress.One proposal would create a single boot camp that would include the necessary facilities, rather than the current process of dividing recruits between MCRD in San Diego and the boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina.In response to a possible closure, the San Diego Military Advisory Council said losing the area boot camp would cost the city.SDMAC Executive Director Mark Balmert said, “So 400 recruits a week come through our location here, about 16,000-17,000 a year. Our studies have shown more than 60,000 of their family members make the trip to San Diego to be a part of their recruit graduation.”Marine officials have already told the Pentagon it cannot add women to boot camps without building new facilities. 1139

Come January 30, the mall will roll out its 'secured parking plan' aimed at keeping non-shoppers from parking on the property.Customers can park free for the first two hours and then pay per additional hour, with a daily maximum of . While the parking stations have been in place for months, some mall employees say they were blindsided to learn they too might have to pay for parking. Mall officials say employers have the option of purchasing parking passes for employees. If not purchased by the employer, individual employees may purchase the passes themselves.“It’s another bill to put on top of the rest," said one employee, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being fired. His employer will not be purchasing parking passes for employees. The anonymous employee says they were told daily passes will cost and monthly passes will cost .“Personally it’s 0 out of my budget each year to go to work, and that’s on top of car payment and insurance," said the employee.He's concerned for mall employees who only make minimum wage and cannot afford the extra cost. While the mall is offering subsidized public transit passes, the concerned employee says that's not an option for everyone. He wishes there had been more transparency about the policy in the months leading up to January 30 roll-out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday morning's rain caused crashes on roadways, damage to construction zones and danger in Sunset Cliffs.One of those crashes had Cristal Ramirez in the passenger seat. "I was supposed to drive for brunch but my friend picked us up and I was glad because I didn't want to drive in the rain," she said.She said as they took the connector from the 163 to the I-8 West they started sliding, "I think we were driving a little too fast because of the rain." Ramirez said they grazed the guardrail. The tires were out of alignment, making it necessary to call for a tow truck."We were like what the heck this is wild!" She said.The group didn't let the accident ruin their afternoon, they continued on in Ramirez's car to Sunset Cliffs.The danger still lurking behind yellow caution tape, draped along the edge of one part of the cliff. From where she and her two friends stood, you could see the cliff carved away underneath the seemingly solid edge."I didn't think about it, I was like 'Oh we're close to the edge.' and we started playing around and I was like, 'Oh we probably shouldn't be playing this close to the edge," Ramirez said when she realized the danger.South of Sunset Cliffs, another problem at the Silver Strand State Beach exit off SR 75. The rain caused metal plates covering trenches in a construction area to bend inward.Crews rushed out to reinforce the plates to make them safe, adding wood supports.
