SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Countywide sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums increased from June to July while median sale prices ticked down, according to data released Wednesday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Single-family home sales rose 2.4%, from 1,980 in June to 2,028 in July, while attached property sales ticked up 5.1%, from 975 in June to 1,025 last month. Both increases are a modest recovery for the housing market after housing sales tumbled by double digits from May to June.Median sales prices for both property types dipped slightly in July after steady gains each month of the year, save for attached property prices from March to April. Single-family home prices decreased 2.2% from 0,000 in June to 5,000 in July, while attached property prices dipped 1.5% from 1,500 in June to 5,000 last month.``The inventory of homes for sale across the county just can't seem to jump-start, although some neighborhoods have been consistently strong,'' said SDAR President Kevin Burke. ``We can be thankful for the continuing economic expansion, low mortgage rates and the recent reduction in the benchmark interest rate by the Fed.''Year-over-year sales declined for both property types, according to the GSDAR. Single-family home sales dipped 3.3% in July when compared to a year ago -- from 2,097 to 2,028, while attached property sales fell 2.8% from 1,055 in July 2018 to 1,025 last month.Year-over-year sales prices increased slightly for both property types. Single-family sales prices ticked up 0.6% from 1,000 in July 2018 to 5,000 last month, while attached property prices increased 1.2% from 0,000 in July 2018 to 5,000 last month.Fifty-eight single-family homes sold in Fallbrook last month, the most of any ZIP code in the county. 1841

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman whose Nissan Versa ended up underneath a semi-truck on Interstate 8 in El Cajon Monday escaped serious injury and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said. Heidi Farst, 56, of El Cajon was driving westbound on I-8 near Main Street when her compact car was rear-ended by another vehicle just before 6 a.m. Farst's car then collided with the semi-truck, flipped over and landed upside down underneath the rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said. Farst was freed from the wreckage and transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for what were described as minor injuries, a CHP dispatcher said. She was then booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of DUI, according to Garrow. No other injuries were reported. The crash triggered lane closures and a SigAlert. All lanes were reopened shortly after 8 a.m. 890

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego City Council committee signed off Thursday on the proposed sale of a vacant city-owned property on Cortez Hill to a nonprofit agency for less than ,000 to create more than 100 units of affordable housing.The .4-acre property at 1449 Ninth Ave. was most recently the site of the now-vacant Cortez Hill Family Center, which housed homeless families.The City Council's Land Use and Housing Committee unanimously approved the proposal to sell the property for ,593 to Community Housing Works, which develops, rehabilitates, preserves and operates affordable apartment communities in San Diego and throughout the state.The sale will now move to the full City Council for consideration.According to a staff report, the low price is justified because "the property sale furthers the public purpose of providing low-income rental housing for 55 years, the number of affordable housing units will be increased, and the city will be relieved of administrative costs and liabilities associated with managing and maintaining the property."Councilman Chris Ward, the committee's chairman, said the building has served an important role, and he's grateful to Community Housing Works for proposing to create a net affordable housing gain."We are eager to get started and to keep working," said Mary Jane Jagodzinski, Community Housing Works' vice president of housing and real estate development.The proposal calls for Community Housing Works to demolish the existing three-story structure and its 48 units and build anywhere between 75 and 110 units, at least 44 of which would be for people or families making 30% or less of the Area Median Income. The other units would be available to people making between 30 and 80% of the region's AMI. The property would also have up to three manager units.The city acquired the property -- formerly a Days Inn hotel -- in 2001 for transitional housing for homeless families. The San Diego Housing Commission administered homeless services at the facility from 2010 until last year, when nonprofit homelessness services provider Alpha Project took over.The building was vacated by families in April after the city opened Operation Shelter to Home at the San Diego Convention Center for those experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rest of the people at the city's transitional homeless shelters -- such as Cortez Hill -- were shuffled to central locations to allow for easier tracking of the virus and to prevent spread of the illness.Alpha Project vacated the building on May 8 and the city officially declared the property "surplus" on May 19.The city's sale is contingent on the development of affordable housing on the property. According to city documents, it will be exclusively restricted to low-income rental housing. The San Diego Housing Commission will monitor the property's affordable restrictions. 2902

  

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Firefighters today came to the rescue of a 4-year-old girl who got one of her hands caught in an escalator at the Fashion Valley mall.The accident occurred in a Bloomingdale's store at the Friars Road shopping center shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.After emergency personnel freed the child from the mechanized stairway, medics took her to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment of injuries of undisclosed severity, the city agency reported. 511

  

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Elected officials, including Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, and a group of residents will urge the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Monday to join the federal government's lawsuit challenging California's sanctuary state law.The bill, signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in October, limits cooperation between California law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. It prohibits local agencies from holding some immigrants on the basis of federal detainers, asking about immigration status or sharing information with federal authorities not available to the public, among other provisions.Opponents believe the law obstructs the deportation of criminals by federal authorities."The sanctuary state law is not only unconstitutional, but it is a real threat to public safety because it forces local government to harbor and shield violent criminals," former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio said. "It is imperative that San Diego voters contact the five members of the Board of Supervisors before the vote tomorrow (Tuesday) to urge them to sign on to the lawsuit against the sanctuary city law."The news conference will be held 11 a.m. at the park behind iHeartMedia, 9660 Granite Ridge Drive.Proponents of the bill, including the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, believe it makes communities safer and allows local enforcement to focus on their jobs. Supporters say it makes immigrants living in the country illegally more likely to report crimes -- such as domestic violence -- without fear of being detained by federal authorities.Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Kristin Gasper have both indicated in Fox News interviews they support joining the lawsuit against SB 54."This is a politically super-charged issue as you might imagine," Gaspar, a candidate for Congress, told Fox News. "We're talking about hundreds of emails pouring in from all sides. But let us not forget, let's take the emotion out of this. We're talking about following the constitutional laws of our land."The Board of Supervisors will discuss the issue in closed session Tuesday.A group of San Diego business, law enforcement, philanthropic, environmental, faith and social justice figures will hold their own news conference Tuesday urging the board not to join the lawsuit. That event is set for 10 a.m. at the San Diego County Administration Center, Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway.At 1 p.m. Monday, the group Indivisible San Diego will hold a rally in front of County Supervisor Bill Horn’s Vista office in an effort to convince him to vote against supporting the lawsuit.The group stated, “We must protect our people and our State values. This is our chance to fight for the underserved and underrepresented; our chance to be on the right side of history. And we must demand that Supervisor Horn do what is morally and objectively right, and vote in a manner that reflects the fabrics of our very diverse communities. Supervisor Horn needs to vote AGAINST joining this useless and bigoted Amicus Brief.”“Joining the federal lawsuit is an affront to California values and an attack on the safety and well-being of our communities,” the group added. “As residents of this historically diverse region, we value all residents and acknowledge our interdependence. If immigrants are afraid to call the police and report crimes, we are all less safe. If our local law enforcement agencies use our resources to enforce federal immigration laws, our local priorities are jeopardized. If tax-paying workers are deported, our economy suffers and our tax base declines. The time is now for our collective communities to come together and stand for the civil rights of our most vulnerable residents, our undocumented residents.
