SAN MARCOS, CA (KGTV) -- Chemicals found in plastics have been linked to food safety. And because of that, entrepreneurs from San Marcos have found a way to fight the problem, and at the same time, help the environment. Jessica Bell says she battled health issues, so she and her husband came up with the idea for safer food containers."It just isn't the way I wanted to live my life," she says in reference to her illnesses.So for one, she decided to eat healthier food, and at the same time, steer away from storing food in plastic containers."I realized I had to take out the things that were contributing to disease. Trying to avoid that contact that food has with those plastic chemicals. We want to be a force for change there.."And the action she took was forming a company with her husband called ReVessel."The idea of a container that can be transported and have all these modular features."Made of stainless steel and silicon, the food storage kits, as they are called, were developed with the help of deep sea engineers. and with one top priority. "Leak proofing," she says. "it's an opportunity for people to carry their lunch anywhere, whether it's in a backpack or purse."But there is more to these storage kits, as they are also environmentally safe."The average number of sandwich bags that children are carrying is about four, and that's daily. Most of them are ending up in the landfill."Jessica calls her kits, "storage anywhere food ware", and with the COVID-19 pandemic, they've teamed up with local restaurants and farms, to deliver healthy food in the kits, to front line workers. "We put together over 200 meals, and we sent these out to front line workers. They can keep these containers and reuse them. We looked at this as a way we could donate meals to our front line healthcare workers, where health really starts." 1855

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - Palomar College will break ground today on a new on-site food pantry that will help meet the massive demand of students facing food insecurity.The future Anita and Stan Maag Food and Nutrition Center will offer a modern, bigger home for the college's food pantry, which has been in operation for over three decades. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)  -- A former navy corpsman who's saved hundreds of lives says she was only doing, "What any American would do". Gina Austin could not take seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. She packed up kayaks, jet skis and supplies and headed to Texas where she helped save people and pets. Austin makes it sound simple. But she was elbow deep in devastation for a week. Her first rescue was a tiny one."We found a little Chihuahua and we were calling her baby girl," she said, noting that she worked with a rescue group to help save thousands of animals. "People had chained their animals up so we actually had to go in with bolt cutters. There were dogs just clinging to cars..."At one point, Austin said she saw a family in a steel boat paddling toward her with shovels. "And they asked… did anybody see a little Chihuahua?" Austin said. The family was describing girl baby girl, her first rescue. That day, the family was reunited.  995

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - Several people in a San Marcos gated community have reported being targets of package thieves, according to one victim who spoke with 10News. The Sheriff's Department is looking at surveillance video, which appears to provide several leads.Mikayla Manos says a package was sent to her home on Almond Drive Friday.  Manos is a mentor for foster children. The package contained the personal items of one of those children, which she was asked to deliver to him.  When Manos arrived home, she did not see the package.Manos checked with her next-door neighbor, who has a surveillance camera. Video from Friday afternoon shows a girl walking past Manos' home. She turns and points toward Manos' porch and can be heard saying "get it".The video shows what appears to be a boy picking something up from Manos' porch, although the package cannot be clearly seen from the camera angle. At least two voices can be heard off camera. One is heard saying "I can't wait to wear these to school tomorrow." Manos says clothes are among the items stolen.Manos says she knows of at least three other neighbors who were victims.  10News spotted an empty Nordstrom bag ripped open on one neighbor's porch, while another neighbor tells 10News someone stole items from his garage when he briefly left it open around the same time.Several package boxes were found dumped nearby, including Manos'. Some of the foster child's items were recovered, but many remain missing. 1498

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A local woman says her heart stopped when she saw what someone nearly sat on at a popular trail in Santee.Angie Haake was just beginning her usual dog walk last Thursday morning near the entrance of Walker Preserve Trail, when she noticed two upset women on the phone talking to deputies.  Haake asked them what was going on and they showed her a razor blade on the bench."I was shocked when it saw it. Obviously whoever put it there wanted someone to sit down and slice the back of their thighs. It's cruel and hateful," said Haake.The discovery was not the first.  Another trail goer tells 10news about three weeks ago, she found a similar blade near another bench.  In November 2016, 10news spoke with a mother at Mast Park in Santee, who found dozens of tacks placed sharp-side up underneath leaves.10news reached out to deputies to find out how many reports of similar cases there have been on the trail, but have yet to hear back. 983
