SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A number of San Diegans who were abroad in Peru are now stranded there amid the coronavirus outbreak.On March 15, as the disease spread, the Peruvian government declared a 15-day national quarantine, eliminating travel out of the country. The U.S. government has taken the first 600 American tourists out of Peru, but the San Diegans who are still there say they still don't have concrete information on when it will be their turn. San Diego health.Prasad has been in Peru since March 8 for a capacity building medical mission with Dr. Reema Sanghvi, a U.C. San Diego anesthesiologist on the faculty. Sanghvi says the Peruvian citizens have treated them with a lot of respect and hospitality, but they want to get home to help their colleagues at a critical time. Andrew Palm, 25, has been living in Lima since December, where he enrolled in a Spanish language immersion program. He says the restrictions are tight, and that military officers will question people on the street who aren't wearing a mask or carrying grocery bags, the only acceptable ways to go outside. "The reason I want to come back home is because I don't know how bad this is going to get," said Palm, whose family lives in Rancho Bernardo. He said those abroad should enroll in its smart traveler program for important updates, at step.state.gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A nursing assistant at a Rancho Bernardo senior care facility is battling for her life, diagnosed with COVID-19. In terms of coronavirus, Villa Rancho Bernardo care center is among the hardest-hit senior care facilities in the county.In early May, Lani says her sister, Irene Branch, a longtime nursing assistant there, told her about all the sick calls, and repeated her insistence to keep working."She always has a big heart. If they are short, she always go to work," said Lani.Around the same time, Branch started to feel sick."Coughing a little bit, no appetite and a short fever," said Lani.Her symptoms quickly got worse and a few days later, Lani got a frightening call from her sister. "She had shortness of breath, so I told her to call 911," said Lani.She did, and a day later in the ICU, Branch was on a ventilator. She received donated plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies, but her condition has deteriorated. Kidney failure has led to ongoing dialysis."I pray. Our family is praying a lot. Every one is praying for her," said Lani.Lani says doctors recently removed her from a medically induced coma, but she remains comatose. "She can't wake up. That's the problem. She's not waking up ... It's hard. I can't accept it right now," said Lani.Unable to visit her sister because of COVID-19 restrictions, Lani recently talked to Branch via Facetime while a hospital worker held up a phone."Telling her we are here to support her. Letting her know we are not abandoning her ... I am very hopeful. I will not give up," said Lani. San Diego (KGTV) -- A person was killed when their motorcycle crashed into a guardrail while riding with friends.Police received the report of the crash at the intersection of Sweetwater and Shannonbrook Court just after 10:30 p.m. in Lemon Grove.Police closed the intersection to investigate how the motorcyclist lost control.The victim died at the scene, their name was not immediately released. 405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man running in and out of traffic while naked in Little Italy died after being taken into police custody Friday.Witnesses say the man was yelling for help in the area of 600 W. Grape Street at about 11 p.m. When the first San Diego Police officer responded, he was able to place handcuffs on the man.As the officer led the man out of traffic, though, witnesses told police the man began to struggle and was taken to the ground by the officer. At least two civilians had to help restrain the man until more officers arrived.RELATED: El Cajon hit-and-run crash suspect found hiding under bedThe man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died just before midnight. The man's death was ruled as an in-custody death.During the struggle, the man suffered a cut to the head.
