GUIYANG, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday called for the European Union to have a balanced, objective, comprehensive understanding of the world's largest developing country during an upgraded strategic dialogue held in the underdeveloped province of Guizhou.State Councilor Dai Bingguo told the EU side that despite rapid economic growth, China has no possibility to be arrogant, nor is it pretending to be a richer or poorer country than it actually is, with unfathomable strategic intentions, according to Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying."China expects the EU to treat itself as an equal," Dai was quoted by Fu as telling EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.The meeting was the fifth strategic dialogue between the two sides and the first since it was upgraded from vice foreign-minister level to its current level.China had made remarkable achievements since its reform and opening up to the outside, but it is still a developing country, Dai said.China has a clear understanding of its position in the international arena and its current level of development, Dai said, adding it will focus on economic development in the long run.China has not been, nor is, nor will be in the pursuit of hegemony, but adheres to the path of peaceful development, Dai said.China needs a peaceful international environment for development and its development will promote global peace and development, he said.Ashton echoed Dai, saying that the European Union should have a comprehensive understanding of China.The EU's view of China's development was one topic of the one-day closed-door meeting."It is one major aim of this strategic dialogue to enhance mutual understanding between China and the European Union. Both sides have a strong will to better understand each other and promote political mutual trust, so as to promote bilateral cooperation," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying in an interview with Xinhua.The two sides also discussed the international situation and the development of the China-EU relationship.On the international situation, China urged all countries to join hands to cope with global challenges.On China-EU relations, China said it supports EU integration. BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China saw a record number of road trips by travelers during the week-long National Day holidays that started Oct.1, data from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) showed Thursday.Travelers logged in a total of 474 million journeys on the roads between Oct. 1 and 7, up 10.9 percent from the same period last year, MOT spokesman He Jianzhong said, adding that the average figure per day was 67.71 million -- a new record high.He said a big increase in short- and medium-distance trips for sightseeing and visits to families and friends contributed to the boom.The country's transport authorities had to deploy 910,000 medium- and large-sized coaches nationwide per day to cope with the transport surge, he added.The waterways sector recorded about 8.66 million journeys during the seven days, up 25 percent from a year earlier, he said.

TAIPEI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Financial organizations from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have stepped up cooperation to take advantage of business opportunities brought by a landmark cross-Strait economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).The board of directors of Taiwan-based Taishin Financial Holdings decided on Sept. 9 to sign a cooperation agreement with mainland-based Nanjing Zijin Investment Co., a move hailed by the company as "the first step to enter the mainland."The agreement aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two companies and their subsidiaries, while Nanjing Zijin will ease the way for Taishin's new operations on the mainland, Taishin said.The company's Taishin Bank is also planning to set up an office in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Prior to this, China Huarong Asset Management Corporation (CHAMC) and Taiwan-based SinoPac Holdings signed an agreement in Beijing on Sept. 3 to begin a new strategic cooperation. According to the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in personnel training, exchange of management experiences and information, as well as in research, development of new products and new business models.Huarong President Lai Xiaomin said the ECFA would promote a quickening flow of economic resources across the Taiwan Strait, including the movement of personnel, materials, capital and information."The ECFA will bring great business opportunities for cross-Strait economic development and boost cooperation between financial institutions on both sides, thus bringing new development opportunities for financial industries across the Strait," he said.The ECFA, which is to take effect on Sunday, was signed by negotiators from the mainland and Taiwan in June, and aims to establish a systematic mechanism for enhancing cross-Strait economic cooperation.Wang Jianmin, a researcher of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said substantial financial cooperation between the two sides has lagged behind trade cooperation for a long time."The ECFA, however, will have a positive impact," he said.The banking service sectors might be among the first to make breakthroughs in cross-Strait financial cooperation.The mainland-based Bank of China and Bank of Communications applied to the Taiwan economic department on Sept. 7 to set up representative offices in Taiwan.According to the ECFA, mainland banks can set up representative offices in Taiwan upon approval by the Taiwan authority and can then apply to set up a branch bank one year after the establishment of representative offices on the island.
