A new study ranks the US counties at highest risk of a measles outbreak, with the areas surrounding Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami topping the list. The authors say places like these should be kept under close surveillance because they "could serve as the fulcrum of continuous importation of the measles virus into the USA." Their paper was published Thursday in the journal 387
A Pennsylvania police department is warning parents to be extra vigilant this upcoming Halloween after finding a marijuana edible that looks a lot like a popular candy. The Johnstown Police Department posted on Facebook that they found candy bearing resemblance to the "Nerds Rope" when executing a search warrant in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania. The marijuana edible looks like the traditional Nerds candy but contains 400 mg of THC. "During this Halloween, we urge parents to be ever vigilant in checking their children’s candy before allowing them to consume those treats," police said on Facebook.A marijuana edible, often shortened to just "edible," is a food or drink item that contains marijuana. Medical marijuana is legal in Pennsylvania for pertinent medical conditions, but it's not legal for recreational use. While police departments often issue these warnings around Halloween, it's worth nothing that edibles are often labeled as containing marijuana on the package. There are a few documented cases of children ingesting marijuana edibles on or around Halloween, such as the 1106

About 130,464 pounds of raw ground beef products have been recalled because they may contain plastic, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday. The products subject to the recall are 16-oz vacuum sealed packages of "Nature's Rancher 100% Grass Fed Organic Ground Beef 85% Lean, 15% Fat" and "Nature's Rancher 100% Grass Fed Organic Ground Beef 93% Lean, 7% Fat," the USDA said. These products, recalled by Rastelli Foods Group, have use or freeze by dates of 10/24/19, 10/31/19, 11/04/19, 11/07/19, and 11/11/19.The products were sent to distribution centers and then retail locations in Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and Maryland. The recall was initiated by customer complaints, though there have been no confirmed adverse reactions from the products, the USDA said. The USDA said consumers who have purchased the beef should not consume it, and anyone concerned about illness should contact a healthcare provider. 990
A rare celestial event is about to take place over the morning skies of the United States on Monday involving the Sun and the planet Mercury. According to NASA, Mercury will pass directly between the Sun and Earth, causing a small part of the Sun to be obscured by Mercury’s shadow. Although the effect is similar to a solar eclipse — where the moon passes between the Sun and Earth — traditional solar eclipse glasses will not work for Monday’s transit. Whereas the moon is capable of blocking all of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth, Mercury’s size and distance means only a fraction of the Sun will be blocked. That does not mean you’re out of luck. More than 60 astronomical groups across the United States will host viewing parties to allow the public to witness the rare celestial event. A telescope with a solar filter will make it possible for people to witness the transit. The transit will begin around 7:35 a.m. ET on Monday and last over 5 hours. For those in the western half of the U.S., the transit will last for a few hours after sunrise, allowing for most Americans the opportunity to witness the transit. The next transit of Mercury will not be visible until 2032. To find a viewing event near you, click 1242
