MAUI, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities say the man killed by a shark in Hawaii this weekend was a 65-year-old resident of California.Shark warning signs are posted Sunday in the Ka'anapali Beach Park area on Maui where the man died.Witness Allison Keller tells Hawaii News Now that the man appeared unconscious as rescuers brought him to shore Saturday.Keller says the victim was missing his left leg from the knee down and skin was torn from his wrist.Hawaii's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement confirmed the man's age but did not release his name. Officials didn't say where in California he was from.The man's family told rescuers he had gone swimming in the area.The last fatal shark attack in Hawaii was in 2015, when a snorkeler off Maui was killed. 773

Mexico is bracing for what's expected to be one of the strongest storms ever to hit its Pacific coast.Hurricane Willa is aimed at the coast's center, where it is forecast to hit Tuesday afternoon or evening. Tuesday morning, the storm was hurling maximum sustained winds of 130 mph and threatening to bring life-threatening storm surge and torrents of rain ashore,according to the National Hurricane Center.The storm weakened slightly to a Category 4 hurricane on Monday, with winds dropping further early Tuesday. Willa formed Saturday and went from tropical storm to Category 5 hurricane in just two days -- the pinnacle of what the hurricane center called "explosive" strengthening. Over the 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning, Willa swelled by 80 mph.The whirlwind growth was only slightly marred by Monday's slowdown. "Willa is an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. While gradual weakening is forecast today (Tuesday), Willa is expected to be a dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the coast of Mexico," the National Hurricane Center said.Storm surge accompanied by "large and destructive waves" are forecast along portions of Mexico's central and southwestern coast. Rainfall ranging from 6 to 12 inches could spawn life-threatening landslides and flash flooding in portions of the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.Willa has been a danger for forecasters as well. An aircraft with the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters was forced to turn around Monday over concerns for its onboard equipment after getting blasted by a bolt of lightning from one of Willa's outer rain bands, according to the National Hurricane Center.In a tweet Monday, Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto said he has asked the National System of Civil Protection to take all steps necessary to protect those in Hurricane Willa's path, as well as those impacted by Tropical Storm Vicente, a weaker system tracking south of Willa that's also primed to make landfall Tuesday. Vicente is expected to be a tropical depression by the time it comes ashore, the National Hurricane Center said.Airlines have started moving out of Willa's path. Southwest has canceled all of its flights at the International Airport in Puerto Vallarta, a resort city in Mexico's Jalisco state. American Airlines has canceled its flights in the city of Mazatlan about 275 miles north of that.Willa is on track to be one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the Pacific coast of Mexico, and its landfall will come three years to the day after the strongest, Category 5 Hurricane Patricia, made landfall in Jalisco.The back-to-back systems of Willa and Vicente have helped make the 2018 hurricane season in the northeast Pacific one for the record books.The season is now the most active hurricane season on record using a measurement called "Accumulated Cyclone Energy," which combines the number of storms and their intensity through their lifetimes to give an overall measurement of tropical activity in a given region.There have been 10 major hurricanes in 2018, including Willa, which ties 1992 as the most major hurricanes seen in the northeast Pacific in one year.Increasing numbers of major hurricanes, along with a greater propensity of storms to undergo "rapid intensification" are expected consequences of?warmer ocean waters resulting from climate change. MILAN (AP) — The Mount Etna observatory says lava and ash are spewing from a new fracture on the active Sicilian volcano amid an unusually high level of seismic activity.The Etna observatory said a swarm of 130 tremors have been recorded by Monday midday, the most powerful registering a magnitude of 4.0. It reported lava flows from the volcano and said a new fracture had opened near its southeast crater.The owner of a refuge on the volcano says hikers are being brought down from higher elevations to 1,900 meters (6,230 feet) for their safety. But there are no reports of injuries, and so far the spewing ash was not causing disruptions to residents of nearby towns and cities.Etna, the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes, has been particularly active since July. 783

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan model for American Girl Dolls is opening up about her health. Alyea Rourke, who has modeled as the Hawaiian American Girl doll Nanea Mitchell, says she's been diagnosed with a disease so rare it took nearly two years to diagnose."It seemed like a giant dream to me. I was just so scared I immediately thought I will never be able to skate again," the now 14-year-old said.Alyea was diagnosed with chronic recurrent multi-focal osteomyelitis (CRMO), a potentially serious and unique form of bone disease that can be long-lasting. Right now, there's no known cure, doctors say. "They described to us was possibly an ear issue, or it was an infection in the jaw or it could’ve been a tooth decay or something like that. So we went probably through about seven doctors before we got an answer," said Lynda Rourke, Alyea's mother. Despite the pain affecting her ability to skate and chance to live a regular teen life, the 14-year-old has tried to stay positive. "I'm not letting it stop me from skating and doing what I love," she said.Alyea's family has set up a GoFundMe?account for support with medical expenses.  1216

It's customizable, so you can change the widgets that appear there.Photos: Apple says the camera is improved, and photos will take up less space due to its new high efficiency image file format (HEIC), which takes up less room than JPEGs. (Though you will still have to option to save them as JPEGs). The Verge explains the file issues in detail.Do Not Disturb: A wonderful new Do Not Disturb improvement now alerts people who text you that you are driving, and cannot text back. You can turn this on or off manually, or with the iPhone 6 or newer, it will do it automatically when it senses you are diving. (Yes, you can turn it off if you are in a bus or a passenger). MetroUK has a good article explaining how this works.Do Not Disturb is just one of several new safety features, according to a good review in The Independent.Siri: The Siri voice assistant has too many improvements to list, but the biggest one is that she will do audio translations into French, Spanish and several other languages. This is a huge improvement for foreign travelers who don't know a word of their new country's language.Maps:  Maps now give more detailed information, and even speed limits of highways, as explained in a report in MacWorld.iPad: The iPad version now lets you easily run multiple screens and apps, making it look more like a Microsoft product (did I just say that?)The website TechDotMatrix lists a number of other good improvements with iOS 11.The BadOlder apps:  iOS 11 no longer supports older 32-bit apps, so if your favorite old app is not 64 bits, you will have to update or delete it.iPhone 5:  If you are still using a four- or five-year-old iPhone 5, you cannot download iOS 11 (here's a full list of devices that are compatible). It will work on the iPhone 5s, though some users report it slows the phone down. (If you still have the iPhone 4, you shouldn't be even reading this column. Please buy a new phone, then get back to me). I have a 5s, and so far everything is fine, though the phone feels a bit slower opening apps.Photo compatibility: The new HEIC photo format (to save space) may not be compatible with PCs and Microsoft-based photo editors without conversion to JPEG files. The Verge has a good writeup on this.? Microsoft Exchange issues: While we are talking Microsoft, some users report problems with the Exchange for iOS app, and with Outlook 365. I have not noticed this problem on my iPhone 5s, with the update.The UglyBattery Drain: Really, there's not much ugly with iOS 11, unless you find it dramatically draining your battery, as some early users report. Gotta Be Mobile explains what to do if your battery is now running down fast. Apple forums are already filled with suggestions for improving battery life if this happens, such as shutting off automatic app refreshing.Not enough space: Also, keep in mind you need two?gigs of free space to install the update. If you have an older iPhone with lots of videos on it, you may have to delete some videos or music.One hour download: Anticipate the whole download, updating and installation to take an hour on average.Don't try to do it on the fly, like 20 minutes before an important meeting (as I tried to do, oops). Also, there is a 10-minute period late in the installation process where you cannot use your phone at all, as all you will see is a slow bar moving.So it is best to do the update at home, at night, when there is no urgency. Finally, you may want to have the phone plugged in during the update, or you'll be stunned how much battery power that one-hour process will take. I was down to 25 percent at the end of the update.
