SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Proposed plans to restore the Mission Bay wetlands have been released by the group ReWild Mission Bay.Organizers say those plans would include moving a popular campsite in the area. The “Campland on the Bay” site would have to be relocated after 50 years.Neighbors who live near the area say the possible move is disappointing. “I was just telling my sister who is out of town this place is legendary. People come here all times of the year.”Managers at the campsite say they’ve extended their lease another five years but it could change depending on the project.Organizers of the expansion say the existing wetlands in Mission Bay may not be here in years to come.“The way it is now wetlands will be overtaken by sea level rise,” says Jim Peugh with the San Diego Audubon Society. “One has to plan ahead to make sure we have wetlands in the future.”Those plans would include giving tourists and locals easier access to the land. It will also give wildlife a larger nesting area.A statement from Campland on the Bay says in part:“We remain hopeful the City will continue to provide this amenity for local residents for another 50 years. The public does not have to choose between waterfront camping and wetlands – both uses can support one another as Campland has proven for the past half-century.”Organizers of the expansion says there is no exact timeline on when restoration will take place. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As Governor Gavin Newsom orders seven California counties to close bars to stop the spread of coronavirus, San Diego County made that same decision on their own and now, some San Diego bars are trying to figure out how to stay open to save their future.Related: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food ahead of July 4 to slow COVID-19 spreadThe directive from the county states that bars, wineries and breweries have to close by July 1 if they don’t serve food. There is an exception for businesses like rural wineries that have dominantly outdoor, spread out seating. For the food rule, a bag of chips does not count. An outline of the rules states businesses have to offer a sit down, dine-in meal and any alcohol purchased has to be on the same transaction of the meal.The co-owners of Carriage House Lounge said they don’t meet this requirement, but they’re brainstorming ways to add food so they can stay open.“Now we gotta close again? At least if we can open a little bit with some food, maybe we can make enough to pay the rent anyway so we don’t get deeper behind,” said Andrew Haines.Haines said he and his business partner Rachel Dymond been back open for less than three weeks before this second closure. During that span when they were open between closures, they barely hit 50% for sales, which has been enough to pay rent and paychecks, but not bring in a profit. They said they can’t consider a second closure, so they’re talking about bringing in catering or partnering with a local restaurant to have food and be able to stay open.They’re not alone in this plan.Chad Cline has ownership in multiple San Diego bars and restaurants, which he says have also been hurting financially through the last three months. He said his businesses that don’t serve food are also going to now have a food option so they can meet new regulations and be able to stay open. Cline said he doesn’t agree with the thought process behind the new law.“I don’t think any rational person is going to be able to wrap their head around the difference between going to a table and having a drink and then going to that same table and having a drink and a hamburger and the second trip is okay but the first trip is not okay,” said Cline.When asked why the food distinction was made, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said bars lead to impaired judgement which can impact carefulness, people spend more time in bars, the loud setting requires people to yell which can spread droplets and the congregating makes contact tracing more difficult.Cline said they’ll follow the rules but he isn’t happy with the leaders who made this decision.“We just play the game and go okay we have to serve food so we’ll serve food, but if I’m being completely clear it is kind of a game at this point because we’re just trying to exist and we just have to figure out how to follow the guidelines,” said Cline. 2922

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A vacant lot next to the College-Rolando area library has become a dumping ground for homeless people and their trash. Now neighbors are fed up and want the owners to do something about it."My house is not even this trashy," says Erin Webster, who visits the library every day. "I keep my house clean. I think we should keep this whole community clean."The lot, at 6650 Montezuma Road, is owned by 52 Blue Falcon LLC, an investment group. They've filed paperwork with the city to build a 4-story Holiday Inn Express on the property. They're still waiting for final city approval."Everybody's trying to get through this process as quickly as possible," says Jeannette Temple with the Atlantis Group, who is a consultant on the project.In the meantime, homeless people have broken through the fence blocking off the lot. There are piles of mattresses, food, tents, electronics and other garbage piled up on every side.Temple told 10News the owners hired a cleaning company to come this week and remove the trash. She also says they have contracted with a security company to come twice a day and kick out anyone who doesn't belong.She says they welcome the complaints from the community and the owners want to know when things aren't right."We appreciate their eyes and ears because we don't want anything bad to happen at the property either," says Temple.Temple says the owners hope to start construction on the hotel at the start of 2019 and it should take about 18 months to finish.City of San Diego representatives say there are ways people can report problem properties in their neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): San Diego State University may require all students to have the Meningitis-B vaccine beginning in the fall of 2019.The University is in preliminary discussions about the idea after an outbreak made three students sick on campus this fall.A university spokesperson confirmed to 10News that the school is in the very early stages of the idea. A statement from the school says it stems from "continued conversations with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency," and that "the safety and wellbeing of all SDSU students remains the priority."The Cal State University system doesn't require the Meningitis-B vaccine. Their guidelines say that schools only need to "inform incoming freshmen living on-campus about the Meningococcal disease and provide information on available vaccines."However, according to SDSU, "The California State University Office of the Chancellor is engaging in the review and consultation process necessary to update the existing policy." The CSU systemwide policy can be found here.This fall's outbreak was the second instance of the disease in the last four years on campus. In 2014, a student died from Meningitis-B.The disease has similar symptoms to a cold or flu. It can be fatal. In other cases, people who get the disease suffer brain damage, hearing loss or the loss of limbs, fingers or toes.During the most recent outbreak, the University supplied antibiotics to students who were in close contact with the ones who'd been infected. The school also held vaccination clinics on campus.Some students had to get a second vaccination after the school discovered that several doses of the vaccine weren't properly stored. Those vaccines were administered by Walgreens, who also was responsible for their storage. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) -- With sudden layoffs and overcrowded grocery stores, the coronavirus is making it even more difficult for families to feed themselves. But many are stepping up to distribute food for free.Three hundred sixty-five cars lined up with their trunks popped wide open, ready for bags of free food to be plopped in. Following their new drive-up food bank protocols, volunteers at the Community Through Hope (CTH) warehouse in Chula Vista made no direct contact with the families in line. "We were able to provide so much nutrition in his very safe environment and get it out quickly," Rosey Vasquez, Executive Director of CTH, said. It was the same story at the Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside. Their Feeding San Diego distribution was supposed to last all day. They are not getting nearly as many orders with just take-home and deliveries. But the owners, Jenna and Randy Elskamp, did not want to lay off their staff. Their idea was to have them continue to make hot meals for newly unemployed restaurant workers. That is why they set up a section of their website to offer free meals for anyone in the industry struggling to feed themselves."I feel like we are all on a sinking ship right now," Jenna said. "Instead of being the rats who are trying to climb up to the very top of the ship to save themselves, we want to be there at the bottom, trying to help everyone survive. Because we either make it out of this together or we don't.
