SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An online petition is growing among San Diego State University students who feel they should be partially reimbursed for tuition and other campus fees because of the pandemic. SDSU senior Kelsey Santin created the petition on Change.org Monday night. Since then, the petition has received over 3,000 signatures. Santin argues that since the way of learning has changed, so should the amount they have to pay. She also says they're paying for campus fees for services they aren't able to access on campus. SDSU started the school year with limited in-person classes and returned to all online learning after hundreds of students tested positive for COVID-19.ABC 10News reached out to SDSU for comment and a spokesperson referred us to the CSU System. A spokesperson from CSU says the money for tuition covers instruction, which students are still receiving online. Campus-based mandatory fees for things like the health center and advising are still available in a virtual format. Other mandatory fees, the spokesperson says, are fees that fund facilities that are often of a result of student referendums voted and approved by students, for things like construction or renovation of a facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A teenager was injured after jumping from an Uber driver's vehicle on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley late Tuesday.The 13-year-old boy, who's from Yucalan, Mexico, was traveling on westbound Interstate 8 in an Uber ordered by his father at about 9:20 p.m., according to San Diego CHP officials. Due to a language barrier with the Uber driver, the teenager decided to jump from the vehicle on the transition ramp to northbound State route 163, CHP officials said.The teen was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to San Diego Police.Based on the statements taken by officers, CHP said they are not pursuing the incident as a criminal matter at this time. 707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transit security officer stabbed a man who tried to grab his service pistol at the Old Town Transit Center Friday, San Diego Police said. The encounter was reported at 1 p.m. at the station at 4009 Taylor St. Police said the armed officer was attacked by a man who “violently pulled” on the gun in the holster in an attempt to remove it. The officer kept his weapon and defended himself with his duty knife, stabbing the man in the torso, according to police. Despite his injury, the unidentified man ran away. He was later found under a nearby bridge and taken into custody, police said. The security officer had minor injuries to his face from being punched. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A transgender San Diegan is calling for change when it comes to blood donation.Currently, the FDA’s recommendation to blood establishments is that in the context of the donor history questionnaire, male or female gender should be self-identified and self-reported for blood donation.Van Levy of Pacific Beach is non-binary transgender, meaning Van does not identify as male or female. Van goes by gender-neutral pronouns like 'they', 'them', 'their', or just Van.Van tells 10News when they reached out to the San Diego Blood Bank, they were told they would not be able to donate if they could not fully complete the donor history questionnaire, which has two gender-specific questions. Van was told if they cannot fill out 'male' or 'female' on the questionnaire they would not be able to donate blood. “It was really hurtful and painful, it reminded me we haven’t progressed as much as a lot of us like to believe we have, it just hurt," said Van. The two gender-specific questions are, in the past 12 months, have you:Male Donors: Had sexual contact with another male?Female donors: Had sexual contact with a male who had sexual contact with another male in the past 12 months?Helen Bixenman is Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at the San Diego Blood Bank. She's in charge of making sure blood from the San Diego Blood Bank is safe and pure, free from transfusion-transmitted infections. “It’s important for people to understand we have a wide range of questions, and these questions pertain to the safety of the donor as well as the safety of the blood products. They include medications, how you’re feeling, travel, risk behaviors," said Bixenman.She says they must adhere to the strict regulations and requirements of the FDA and AABB. She says if anyone fails to fill out the entire donor history questionnaire they will be turned away from donating blood.Van wants to see this regulation changed and believes it marginalizes a group of people who only want to help their community. “I definitely understand the rules and regulations that they have to adhere too and I think that there's ways to remove gender from the questions to get to same answers they’re seeking to protect people receiving blood," said Van. Bixenman says the San Diego Blood Bank does not want to turn people away from blood donation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report for a San Diego State student who died after falling from his bed after a night of partying revealed elevated alcohol levels.The report from the county Medical Examiner found that Dylan Hernandez, 19, died of blunt force injuries of head and ruled his death an accident. At the time of the autopsy, a toxicology report said elevated alcohol levels of 0.06 percent and cannabinoids were found in his system. However, earlier reports from campus police said he had a 0.23 percent blood-alcohol level the morning he fell.Hernandez fell from his bunk bed in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2019, after a fraternity party that night.
