SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV)— A Santee family is praying for recovery and justice, as their mother remains on life-support. She was the victim of a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night. 10News spoke to Richard Johnson. His mother Julie Johnson and sister in law, Jayme Morton-Johnson were the victims of the hit-and-run.According to Richard Johnson, Wednesday at around 8 pm, they heard a commotion outside their home. Johnson said Julie ran outside and saw a neighbor boy getting beaten by three teenage boys.  Julie's other son, Robert, who is also Jayme's husband, says he was making dinner when his mother called him outside because of the altercation.  Robert stepped in to help break up the fight. They, and a neighbor, were able to put an end to it, but the teens ran into the car. “(Julie) always had a heart out for people are hurt or hears somebody in need, she acts right away, and that’s what she did," Richard Johnson said of his mother. As the suspects made their get-away, they sped onto the curb, hit the women, and flung them onto the street. “Jayme rolled off the side of the car with little injury," Johnson said. "And my mom flew off the car, and the impact was deadly. “Jayme was released from the hospital Thursday."The only thing I recall is seeing that drivers eyes and him hitting us and that’s when we grabbed each other, and by no means do I see it being an accident," she said.Jayme is expected to make a full recovery. Julie Johnson was not so lucky. The impact sent her flying 40 feet. Her brain is now non-responsive. An oxygen machine is the only thing keeping her alive. San Diego County Sheriffs Department said within two hours, they found the get-away car at Sonrise Community Church just two miles south of the crash. The owner of the vehicle then turned in one of the passengers, a 16-year-old boy, who was booked into juvenile hall for Felony hit-and-run. The two other teens have not been arrested. "I just want them to turn themselves in and give justice to my mother in law," Jayme said.“An irresponsible decision can end somebody’s life," Johnson said. While Johnson and his family wait for an arrest, they also pray. They said that is the only thing that may save their matriarch."The only thing they can do is hope from God that she will come back," Johnson said. "I’ve been praying that he’ll give her a chance. SANTA ANA (CNS) - District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said today the murder indictments of five people -- including a man aiming to lead the Orange County chapter of the Mexican Mafia -- will send a message that investigators are disrupting activities of the notorious prison gang."Our hope is this certainly will disrupt what they're doing right now," Rackauckas said. Five men were indicted in March in connection with the Jan. 19, 2017, killing of 35-year-old Robert Rios in Placentia.Rios was killed for allegedly not paying "taxes" to the gang on drug sales, Rackauckas said. Johnny Richard Martinez, 42, Gregory David Munoz, 30, Ysrael Jacob Cordova, 33, Ricardo Valenzuela, 38, and Augustine Velasquez, 22, were all indicted for the killing.They're also facing a special circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery, which could open them to the death penalty.They are also charged with conspiracy, participating in gang activity and burglary, and they face sentencing enhancements for gang activity.Cordova also faces a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a gun causing death and the other defendants face a sentencing enhancement for the vicarious discharge of a gun causing great bodily injury, according to court records.Several law enforcement experts say Martinez, who had been organizing a hunger strike in the Orange County Jail, is gunning to replace Orange County Mexican Mafia boss Peter Ojeda.There has been a void in the gang's leadership since Ojeda died June 7 at the age of 76 while serving a prison sentence for continuing to run the gang from a prison cell.The hunger strike ended Friday evening when the last inmate accepted meals, according to Ran Grangoff, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Undersheriff Don Barnes told City News Service on Friday that investigators suspected the hunger strike was a ploy by Martinez to get moved to a cell where he would have more freedom to get messages out to his gang.Martinez has signaled he may want to represent himself on one of his cases, so he would be given more access to a phone and other communication resources, said Senior Deputy District Attorney Dave Porter, the prosecutor on his case.Martinez was serving a prison sentence for murder in 1994 when he allegedly helped orchestrate Rios' killing, according to court records.He had been sentenced then to 15 years to life in prison, Rackauckas said. Martinez is also charged in connection with the attempted murder in Placentia in August 2017 of Gregory Munoz -- one of the defendants now indicted in connection with the Rios killing in January of last year.Also charged in the attack on Munoz were Robert Martinez, 36, Frank James Mosqueda, 39, and Omar Mejia, 30.According to one of the attorneys on the case, Munoz allegedly complained that Johnny Martinez did not tell Munoz that his girlfriend was cheating on him, and Martinez felt disrespected by the griping, leading to the attack. Mosqueda is accused of actually shooting Munoz, the attorney said.Cordova, Valenzuela, Velasquez and Charles Frederick Coghill, 35, were all charged with murder last year in connection with the Rios killing, but Coghill was not included as a defendant in the March indictment.But Coghill, who was listed as a witness before the grand jury that handed down the indictment, is still facing charges in the case. Coghill apparently made a deal with prosecutors to testify against the other defendants, one of the defense attorneys on the case said.According to the indictment, from Oct. 8, 2016, through Jan. 22, 2017, Johnny Martinez, who's also known as "Crow," allegedly communicated via cellphone while in the Salinas Valley State Prison in Monterey County about 3,697 times with Munoz, who was incarcerated in the Calipatria State Prison in Imperial County.Munoz allegedly communicated via cellphone with Cordova about 50 times from Jan. 18-19, 2017, while he was incarcerated but Cordova was not, the indictment alleges. He also allegedly communicated via cellphone with Valenzuela during those same days about 43 times, according to the indictment.Munoz is also accused of contacting Velasquez about three times via cellphone, the indictment alleges. During those same days in January 2017, Munoz allegedly contacted Coghill about 58 times through cellphone, the indictment alleges.Munoz allegedly directed Coghill to "pick up a silver Chrysler 300 automobile and a semi-automatic firearm from a female named Imelda in Santa Ana," on Jan. 19, 2017, according to the indictment. Munoz also told Coghill to drive to an Anaheim hotel to pick up Cordova, Valenzuela and Velasquez on Jan. 19, 2017, the indictment alleges.After arriving at 941 Vista Ave. in Placentia on Jan. 19, 2017, Cordova, Valenzuela and Velasquez confronted Rios in the front yard of a residence, where "Velasquez detained Robert Rios at gunpoint while (Cordova) and (Valenzuela) entered the residence," the indictment alleges.Rackauckas told reporters Monday that "at least" the indictment of Martinez and his alleged cohorts will send a message to his criminal organization that investigators are on to the smuggled cell-phone scheme. (KGTV) - Surveillace video shows thieves stuffing a car after breaking into a popular Santee restaurant hit hard by the pandemic and a recent tragedy.Every time restaurant owner Maria Dellarsina looks at the surveillance video she gets anxious."All kinds of emotions. I feel angry, and I feel sad," said Dellarsina.The roller coaster of emotions began after a Thanksgiving morning break-in. The 43-year old Jimmy's Restaurant of Santee was ransacked by thieves. The HVAC access on the roof is the likely entry point.Video shows three people stuffing items into their car, as they helped themselves to whatever they wanted."They took food, liquor, checks, cash, laptop computer, and sports memorabilia," said Dellarsina.The items stolen were just part of the loss. The thieves also cut the power and left the refrigerators open, so all the food had to be tossed."When I saw food going into the trash is when I broke down," said Dellarsina.The total loss more than ,000.The restaurant had to be shut down for a few days, including the day after Thanksgiving, their busiest day of the year."One thing after another ... devastation," said Dellarsina.Beginning in March, restaurant was shut down for months during the pandemic. In May, her husband and co-owner John, passed away from lung cancer."I didn't know if I wanted to open again. We did it. I got my strength back to continue his legacy, but it's hard on us.So far, the pandemic has slashed revenues by more than 60%. SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV) -- A boy who became well known after a photo of him hugging a police officer was widely shared on social media is feared dead along with his family after their SUV fell over a cliff, according to the Associated Press.Authorities say 15-year-old Devonte Hart is feared dead after the family’s vehicle fell 100 feet over a cliff along Highway 1 near County Road 430.Tha California Highway Patrol said 19-year-old Markis Hart, 14-year-old Jeremiah Hart and 14-year-old Abigail Hart died along with their parents, Jennifer and Sarah Hart. "We have every indication to believe that all six children were in there," Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allmon said. "We know that an entire family vanished and perished during this tragedy."The California Highway Patrol hasn’t determined why the vehicle went over the cliff into the ocean.Devonte gained fame after a photo of him hugging a police officer went viral. In the photo (pictured below) a Portland officer reportedly saw him holding a “free hugs” sign and crying. (CNS) - Orange County supervisors Tuesday voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.Bryant was born on Aug. 23 and wore the number 24 in his playing days, said Orange County Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, explaining why she settled on Aug. 24 as the date to honor the former Lakers great who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that also killed his daughter and seven others.Bryant also wore the number 8 during his first several seasons in the NBA.Steel said Bryant, who lived in Newport Beach, was a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."Supervisor Don Wagner, in an apparent reference to Bryant's 2003 sexual assault civil case in Colorado, which Bryant ultimately settled, said the former NBA star had his ups and downs in his lifetime."Kobe Bryant's life, like each one of us who ever lived, presents moments to celebrate and to condemn," Wagner said.
