While other retailers in recent years, such as Toys 'R' Us and RadioShack have faded away, Sears' demise would mark the end of an industry titan. The company was at one time the nation's largest retailer, selling items as small as earrings, to as big as houses. The announcement does not impact the nearly 400 locations that operate as Sears Hometown or Sears Outlet locations, which feature appliances and electronics. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for sections of the Louisiana coast as Tropical Storm Barry is churning the in the Gulf of Mexico. Barry remains a minimal tropical storm with 40 MPH winds, but is expected to gain strength as it turns toward the Louisiana coast. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to make landfall during the middle of the day Saturday. The National Hurricane Center said a Hurricane Warning is now in effect for the coast of Louisiana from Intracoastal City to Grand Isle.Despite the disorganized nature of Barry on Thursday, the storm is in a favorable environment for strengtheningThe biggest impact of Barry could be the rain, which could cause flooding. TEXAS CITY, Texas – About 45 minutes southeast of Houston, the Texas City Independent School District (TCISD) takes school security to a different level than most districts across America."We do think we're the school of 2030," said Mike Matranga.Texas City is just 20 minutes from Santa Fe High School where, two years ago, a gunman killed 10 people “You don’t hire a plumber to fix an IT problem," Matranga said. "You don't hire someone who is an educator to fix real world, mass violence problems." Texas City hired Matranga to overhaul school safety and gave him .5 million to do it.Mantranga is a 12-year Secret Service veteran who's been to dozens of countries and war zones."I would say the pressure is equal if not greater," Mantranga said of his role in Texas City. Classroom doors in schools now have reinforced glass and special locks.The district has hundreds of cameras in its 14 schools. At any point in time, around two-dozen can have facial recognition capabilities. Matranga's security team estimates the software is accurate about seven out of 10 times there is an alert.That's not the only software TCISD has invested in.Teachers have an app to alert the security team of a problem. The entire district can be locked down with a press of a button. Students can report tips online. The district has also invested in software that searches social media and the dark web. The district has also created behavioral profiles of each school. The profiles track issues like the amount of in-school and out-of-school suspensions to give the district a better idea of which students might be at risk. Matranga has faced criticism for his methods. There have been concerns the enhanced security could racially profile, violate privacy, or mis-identify students. “People need to stop being so sensitive," Matranga said. "Facts and data are facts and data. I don’t make them up. We take it and build from it and we identify kids at risk.”"I think that our society has gotten to a point where we are too politically correct where people are getting hurt," he said. The Army Corp of Engineers is looking at more than 300 facilities nationwide that it could turn into hospitals.New York City’s Javits Convention Center opened as a temporary hospital on Monday. Thousands of beds are now set up to receive patients who are not suffering from COVID-19.The field hospital is staffed with hospital units from Fort Campbell and Fort Hood.Wayne Brackin, the CEO of Kidz Medical Services, has experience with field hospitals and hospital hurricane responses in Florida. He says the Army can set up a field hospital in just weeks. “It will have the feeling of being in a mass unit,” said Brackin. “You'll come into a different kind of facility. They'll be higher levels of security. You're clearly in most cases going to be going into a structure that's been built and will have a lot of components that will look like a very sophisticated version of a tent.”Brackin says an advantage of an existing structure is it's typically climate controlled.The Army is sending field hospitals to Washington state and New Jersey. It says they'll be running by April 2.Navy hospital ships that arrived in New York and outside Los Angeles have started accepting non-COVID-19 patients.A field hospital also opened Tuesday in New York City’s Central Park. It's run by Christian humanitarian aid organization Samaritan's Purse. The group usually brings doctors to extreme medical situations around the world.The Central Park field hospital is designed as a respiratory care unit.
