A Pennsylvania school district has a different solution for tackling intruders: rocks.Buckets full of river stones have been placed in all classrooms at the Blue Mountain School District in Schuylkill County, Superintendent David Helsel said.If students at the rural school district can't evacuate during a shooting, they don't have to sit and wait."Protocol has been that students lie down, under desks and basically become passive targets on our classrooms," Helsel said. "We decided to empower our students with tools of self-defense if needed."In a video posted online, the superintendent said the district decided to bring rocks to the classrooms after staff members took the active shooter response training, ALICE -- alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. The training taught them how to barricade doors with desks and chairs, and run away from gunfire. It also encouraged students to throw everything, from pencils to staplers, at potential shooters "rather than wait passively" for them "to attack.""At one time I just had the idea of river stone. They're the right size for hands, you can throw them very hard and they will create or cause pain, which can distract," Helsel told CNN affiliate WNEP.But they only see it as a last resort."We've learned many things from these tragedies over the years," Helsel said. "One of them is that evacuating makes students the safest."And if students can't leave the building, they'll have their stones."We understand that a gun is much more deadly than a stone. It's our hope that we can somehow stop the ability of an armed intruder to enter our classrooms," he added.Parents appear to like the district's plan."At this point, we have to get creative, we have to protect our kids first and foremost, throwing rocks, it's an option," parent Dori Bornstein told the affiliate.The-CNN-Wire 1851

A second grand juror who was tasked with deciding which police officers involved in the shooting at Breonna Taylor's apartment that led to her death should be charged has come forward to criticize the process. In September, a grand jury charged one police officer with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing his gun at an apartment complex. No officer who fired their guns toward Taylor or her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, were charged in connection with Taylor's homicide. 489

A toddler hanging from the roof after crawling out of his bedroom window managed to come away unscathed after falling into a passerby's arms. It's a situation that could have ended tragically if not for the quick actions of a good Samaritan.Police report Jill Harper happened to be driving by the 1300 block of Mills Street in Sandusky, Ohio and saw the toddler hanging from the edge of the roof. She ran over to help.According to the police report, the child fell into her arms, and she brought him inside."When I caught him I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, I caught him,'" said Harper."When I started pounding on the house, that's when he fell, and my hand was pounding.  So when he fell, he kind of came back and hit my arm, and then I caught him."Police said they did not notice any obvious bumps and bruises. The Sandusky Fire Department responded to the scene, looked him over and found no injuries.Kelsie Hellman, the boy's mother's cousin, signed a refusal form, not wanting him to be transported to the hospital, according to police.Sandusky police said the boy is currently in the custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman told police she is trying to gain custody of the boy, whom she has looked after since he was 3 months old.How did he get out there? Hellman told police she was using the bathroom when the incident happened. She said the boy must have gone around the baby gate she put at the bottom of her stairs, allowing him to get up to his room where the window was left slightly open. The boy then apparently slid through the window, which opens onto the roof.Meanwhile, Sandusky Police Detective Kevin Youskievicz told Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland, he believes the child could have suffered serious injuries if Harper hadn't acted quickly."I can only describe her as a hero, she's a hero," Youskievicz said."Everyone says we need heroes, she is one,"According to the report, Hellman said her husband was fixing the window so the boy could not crawl out of it again. 2079

A US service member and a member of the UK armed forces were killed in an improvised explosive device attack in the Manbij area of Syria on Thursday.A US official with knowledge of the initial reports from the battlefield told CNN the American had been killed. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the British death in a statement saying the soldier was embedded with US forces on a counter ISIS operation when the incident occurred."The family has been notified and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," the British statement continued. Two members of the US-led coalition in Syria were killed and five were wounded in the attack, the coalition said. The official said that multiple vehicles were involved in the IED incident. The coalition said details about the incident are being withheld pending further investigation and that the names of those killed will be released "at the discretion of the pertinent national authorities."The US maintains about 2,000 US troops in Syria, who mostly work with local allies fighting ISIS in Syria.President Donald Trump said Thursday that the US would "be coming out of Syria like very soon," just hours after the Pentagon highlighted the need for US troops to remain in the country for the immediate future.Chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana White told reporters that "important work remains to guarantee the lasting defeat of these violent extremists" in the country.The-CNN-Wire 1440
