SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The first batches of Pfizer's long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine arrived in San Diego County Monday for both U.S. Department of Defense personnel and civilians, with initial vaccinations to begin as soon as Tuesday.Naval Medical Center San Diego received an unspecified number of vaccines Monday, with front-line medical workers and essential mission personnel -- such as EMS, firefighters and gate personnel -- to begin receiving the first dose of the vaccinations Tuesday. Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton will take a portion of those doses for personnel north of San Diego."We are proud to support operation Warp Speed," said Rear Adm. Tim Weber, commander of Naval Medical Forces Pacific. "This vaccine will strengthen our ability to protect our people. I am confident in the stringent regulatory process of the FDA."Weber said the number of doses delivered to the Navy in San Diego is likely fewer than the number of "first-tier" medical personnel at the two hospitals. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Supreme Court ruled this week that a San Diego court must re-examine its decision to allow a criminal defendant to subpoena Facebook to obtain private social media posts and messages he alleged would help him in his defense.The ruling issued Thursday laid out a series of factors for the trial court to consider when weighing whether to allow the defendant to gain access to his alleged victim's restricted posts and private messages.The ruling stems from the criminal case of Lance Touchstone, a Northern California man charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting his sister's boyfriend in Ocean Beach in 2016.Touchstone sought to obtain information from the victim's Facebook posts that the defendant alleged would show his accuser was a violent person, bolstering a self-defense claim.A San Diego Superior Court judge ruled in Touchstone's favor and ordered Facebook to release the information, leading to subsequent appeals.In an opinion authored by Chief Justice Tani G. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee unanimously voted Wednesday to send a suite of proposed regulations on dockless scooters to the full council.Mayor Kevin Faulconer introduced the regulations Oct. 18 after the city spent months wrestling with how to both ensure public safety and allow dockless scooter companies like Bird, Lime, and Razor to continue operating in San Diego.Faulconer's proposal would mandate that scooter companies limit the maximum speed of scooters in high-traffic areas of the city, send monthly data reports to the city detailing things like parking and trip information, educate riders on local traffic laws, and indemnify the city for liability for riders injured within city limits. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case.
