Specifically, Lampert wants his ESL Investments hedge fund to have the same status as major banks like Wells Fargo and Citigroup that provided the initial 0 million loan, CNBC reported.Meanwhile, Sears is bleeding money. It said it is burning through cash at a rate of 5 million a month, according to its first-day filings.The 132-year-old company has been struggling for several years and is already drowning in debt. It was forced to file for bankruptcy when it came time to make a 4 million debt payment but didn't have the cash.Lampert, who gave up the CEO role at Sears as part of the filing, has been loaning money to Sears for years. But he has always taken steps to ensure that his loans are backed by hard assets, such as real estate or credit card balances, to improve his chances of having the loan repaid even in the case of bankruptcy. Scientists from all over the world recently returned home after the largest Arctic expedition to date.The Polarstern, a German ice breaker, housed hundreds of scientists who spent time over the past year to do research in the Arctic.“The MOSAiC Expedition is an expedition to the central Arctic. We took a ship, an icebreaker ship, and froze it in the arctic sea ice. It stayed there and drifted with that ice for a full year and that ship served as a platform for doing all kinds of research to understand the changing Arctic sea ice and the implications that has on the arctic system and global system,” Matthew Shupe, scientist and co-coordinator of the MOSAiC Expedition, said. He is also a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.“MOSAiC really represents the largest expedition to the arctic ever,” he said. “MOSAiC is, I would say, very photogenic. It’s really compelling and captivating to all kinds of audiences.”But the data collected and changed observed during the rip serve a larger purpose than just beautiful, picturesque nature videos and photos.“The Arctic is changing. The sea ice is changing and we knew this,” Shupe said. “But when we went there the ice was thinner than we expected.”That change impacts a number of things. Shupe said as the Arctic changes, it’s opening for business. “It’s opening for cargo transportation, it’s opening for tourism.”It’s an indicator of larger changes as well.“Can potentially affect our weather, you can imagine the large scale circulation of our globe is dependent on things like a cold North Pole versus warm tropics and that affects the large scale circulation,” he said.The data these scientists collected over the span of a year will be used for global climate and weather prediction models.“These models rely on information, we have to understand the Earth's system in order to model it,” Shupe said.Hundreds of scientists from 37 different nations, all focusing on different projects, funded in part by U.S. tax dollars.“This is funded by the national science foundation, department of energy, NOAA, NASA, these are institutions that are funding this kind of research to understand arctic change and how it affects all of us," Shupe said.Next year, you’ll be able to experience the Arctic, too.“This planetarium film is an educational documentary about the MOSAiC Expedition,” said Lianna Nixon, a filmmaker, who spent a few months aboard Polarstern. She documented the expedition for a few months to bring the Arctic to everyone. “What we wanted to do was really express what kinds of science people were doing in the field and take that into your local planetarium.”The 30-minute film will be available at planetariums as soon as next year -- a 2D version will also be available.“The Arctic impacts all of us no matter where we live. The polar regions drive a lot of our global climate systems,” Nixon said.Expeditions to the Arctic have been happening for more than 100 years, but this new data collected by MOSAiC will be used in the science community for years to come.“MOSAiC is building on this history of expeditions to the Arctic,” Shupe said. 3131

(KGTV) - A well known funeral home in San Marcos wants to add on-site cremation services, but the plan is facing pushback from the community.Allen Brothers Mortuary has filed paperwork with the City of San Marcos to start the project. Meanwhile, people who live nearby have started a petition online to stop it."If this project goes forth, there are serious health risks that could affect YOU," says the petition.The County of San Diego website lists several possible emissions from crematoriums, including, "oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, oxides of sulfur, particulate matter and toxic air contaminants. Emissions of mercury are a specific concern for crematories."It also discusses rules and state laws that companies have to follow to mitigate any emissions, including secondary chambers.People who live nearby say they're worried about the impact it could have on their lives."It's a little disconcerting," says Pam Davidson, who lives in Whispering Oaks Apartments across the street from the mortuary. "There are enough toxins in our environment and around here with traffic and everything like that.""Families have kids here," says Nemai Martinez, who also lives at Whispering Oaks. "We don't know about ashes going up into the air. Plus the smell."In addition to the apartment complex, the mortuary is within steps of the San Marcos Post Office, the San Marcos Senior Center, a small shopping complex and a community park and playground.Karen Allen, the owner of Allen Brothers, says her company is aware of the concerns and wants to make sure her company works with the community.The company sent a statement to 10News that reads, "Linda Allen has heard the concerns of the community and is and has been, an avid supporter and proponent of this community. She wants to be clear that whatever she does here would only be done with the support of her community. Linda and her company have been at this location for nearly 40 years and want to continue that relationship in perpetuity. We are working with our Environmental consultants on addressing the neighbors’ concerns and evaluating whether or not those can be mitigated. We will know more once the studies have been completed." Last year, a crematorium in National City sent black smoke billowing into the air for nearly 30 minutes after a door was mistakenly left open. (KGTV) -- Following hours of public comment and discussion, the Santee City Council approved a massive housing development that has been in the works for decades.Late Wednesday evening, the council voted 4-1 in favor of the Fanita Ranch project. The development was first proposed in 1999 and has gone through several revisions.The project includes nearly 3,000 new homes, as well as plans for a school, parks, and open space. Changes to state Route 52 are also a part of the plan.The development will be located north of SR-52, west of Eucalyptus Hills, off Magnolia Avenue and Cuyamaca Street.Fanita Ranch supporters have argued that more homes are needed in the area, but opponents believe the project would create a traffic problem, especially during an emergency situation like a wildfire. Noise and environment-related concerns have also been raised.The developers, HomeFed Corporation, said they have solutions for many of the issues brought up by project opponents, including evacuation routes in the event of an emergency.HomeFed also said the project would bring more jobs and revenue to the city of Santee.The project would be completed in four phases and would be finished in 10-15 years.Prior to the vote, some Santee residents asked the council to table the issue and allow them to have a vote on the land use with Measure N on the November ballot. 1385
