SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time for family movie nights in the park! The 2018 Summer Movies in the Park series will kick off next Friday with a viewing of Coco at Waterfront Park.The event series is a great option for a family-friendly night out--- it offers games, giveaways, music and activities before the sun goes down. After sunset, you and your family can settle into your chairs and blankets to watch a movie under the stars.Movies are rated G through PG-13. This year’s Summer Movies in the Park is bigger than ever, with 151 movies showing at dozens of parks across the county. All screenings are free and open to the public.Movies include new hits, like “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Black Panther,” as well as classics like “The Princess Bride” and “Back to the Future.” Be sure to check out the movie calendar for a complete schedule.San Diego County Parks and Recreation and sponsor cities began the series in 2007 as a “take back our parks” initiative. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When COVID-19 forced everyone in, it also forced Canyon Crest Academy students Erika and Vivian to get creative"When quarantine and school closures became a reality for us, I really wanted to give back to society and especially how it's been draining resources for hospitals that are on the front lines, I wanted to use my skillset to provide in any way I can," said Erika. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego began welcoming some students back to campus housing, with a host of COVID-19 safety precautions.As with all things during this pandemic, move-in weekend at UCSD didn’t look quite the same."Kinda nervous, but excited," said freshman Alexis Estrada.Along with the normal nervous excitement, there was the new normal. Each student given a mask and hand sanitizer, along with a coronavirus test - results within 48 hours.The move-in for some 7,500 students - staggered throughout a 10-day span.Residential adviser Summer Thai says the actual moving in is taking longer."Definitely different. More difficult to get more stuff into the room ... in elevators, we practice social distancing. One family unit at a time," said Thai.While a vast majority of classes will be remote learning, any student going to a UCSD location will have to a complete a daily health self-screening. Students living and going to class on campus will be tested twice a month.Freshman Nicole Rodriguez says while the pandemic life is challenging."I can’t really hang out with suitemates. It's kind of isolating ... But these precautions are the right thing to do," said Rodriguez.UCSD officials are hoping to avoid the outbreak situation unfolding at San Diego State University, with more than 700 positive cases. UCSD is going high tech to ease those worries. Ongoing wastewater testing is serving as a warning system. Also, a voluntary pilot program will utilize smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.Classes begin September 28. Nearly 90% of classes will be online. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two UC San Diego Health workers have tested positive for COVID-19, officials with the medical system announced Saturday.UCSD Health said in a statement that the workers "are recuperating at home and doing well," officials said."Both infected health workers sought medical assessment after exhibiting key respiratory symptoms, and were tested," according to UCSD Health.University officials cite "exposure and infection in the community" as reasons for the workers contracting the virus, rather than from travel or a patient."UC San Diego Health has launched an extensive effort to identify any patients or health system colleagues who may have been in recent contact with either of the two health workers," officials said.The group operates three hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center also in La Jolla.
