Barbie dolls have long inspired young girls with their beauty and fashion sense. Now they're inspiring them with their brains and bravado, too.On Tuesday, just ahead of International Women's Day, Barbie introduced a batch of new dolls based on real-life figures.The new dolls came after Mattel, maker of Barbie, conducted a survey of 8,000 mothers around the globe and found that 86% are worried about the kind of role models their daughters are exposed to."Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything," wrote Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager of Barbie, in a news release.This week Mattel introduced dolls in two separate series of Barbies: "Inspiring Women," based on historical figures, and new additions to its "Shero" line of dolls named for inspirational contemporary women.Both lines reflect the Barbie brand's highest honor: a one-of-a-kind doll made in a real woman's likeness.Inspiring WomenThe "Inspiring Women" dolls come with educational information about the contributions each woman made to society.One is Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Frida Kahlo, the renowned Mexican artist and activist, will be another.Barbie will also honor Katherine Johnson, a pioneer in mathematics who broke barriers of race and gender. BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- An Indiana Sheriff's deputy who was shot while assisting police early Friday morning will not survive his injuries according to the Boone County Sheriff.  Deputy Jacob Pickett was critically injured in a shooting while assisting the Lebanon Police Department with a pursuit of a wanted individual. He is being kept alive on life support so that his organs can be donated. At least one other law enforcement officer on the scene returned fire, striking one of the suspects.Pickett was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis where he was last listed in critical condition. The injured suspect, identified as Anthony Bumgarht, 21, is in stable condition at this time. Two other suspects, John D. Baldwin Sr., 55, and John D, Baldwin Jr., 28, both fled after the shooting. Baldwin Jr. was arrested a short time later after a wrong-way pursuit on I-65.   926

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Pregnant and practicing medicine: It's impressive under normal circumstances, but now that's even more true during a pandemic."It's definitely an interesting experience," said Dr. Sharise Richardson, who is 31 weeks pregnant. "I am not immune to some of the stresses and anxieties that moms are thinking of right now."Richardson is a doctor on staff at West Boca Medical Center, seeing patients and delivering babies."My medical training does give me a little more perspective, and that allows me to be able to work and not feel too anxious," she said.Richardson said she's no stranger to being pregnant in difficult times. Her first baby was born during the Zika outbreak. She's now taking extra steps to honor her commitment to her patients, while keeping her family safe."I come home and take what my husband calls my decontamination bath," she said. "Leave my clothes outside, shoes outside."Richardson said the questions from pregnant women are plentiful right now."First and foremost, I tell my moms to take a deep breath, right," she said. "You are in good hands."Richardson said the number one feeling she gets from patients is anxiety and fear of the unknown. Some of that, she believes, stems from anxiety about whether or not a support person will be allowed in the hospital with a laboring mother. So far, the answer is yes."Everyone in the room, including themselves will have a mask on. that makes them feel better," she said.It's a feeling West Boca Medical Center acknowledges."People coming to us at a wonderful time and an anxious time," said George Rizzuto, the CEO at West Boca Medical Center. "Our hospital is safe and clean, but it has taken a lot of rigor in regard to protocols."Richardson is sticking to the protocols to deliver babies as safely as possible and have her own newborn at the hospital weeks from now."For me, it's just taking it day by day," she said.
