(KGTV) - With studies showing San Diegans are spending more time than ever stuck in traffic, we're listening and looking for answers to your travel headaches.A new technology being hailed as a "game changer" by some experts takes aims at those achy, tiresome commutes. Cadillac's Super Cruise, the only hands-free semi-autonomous driving feature on the highways, is now on local roads. 10News reporter Michael Chen went to North County Cadillac and took a long for a test drive in the CT6 sedan on I-15.Once on the highway, the feature was activated with the push of a button on the steering wheel. The feature allows the driver to go feet- and hands-free as long as you stay in one lane. "If someone slows down in front of me, it will slow down our speed," said Drew Doran.While other driver-assistance systems use cameras to center a car, Doran says General Motors has extensive laser mapping of US highways that leads to better accuracy."It actually knows what is ahead of the vehicle," said Doran. On the hour-long drive, we tracked every curve and every time, it stayed in the center of the lane. The driver still expected to be on standby. A camera on the steering wheel watches for distractions. If the driver is doing something like reading and blocking that camera, it will warn the driver.When we blocked the camera, a green light flashed - the first of several alerts - before Super Cruise disengaged. Doran says he recently went on a trip to Los Angeles with his wife. He says he used Super Cruise for about 80% of a drive that left him feeling relaxed. "Not the usual back pain. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Two children sparked a small fire in an Escondido church after finding a lighter in a classroom there, fire officials said.Escondido firefighters and police were dispatched just before 1 p.m. Sunday in response to a report of a possible structure fire somewhere near South Escondido Boulevard and West Seventh Avenue, Battalion Chief Mike Bertrand said. Officers arrived on scene first and discovered the blaze was inside the Iglesia Bautista Fundamental meeting house at 221 West Seventh Ave."Officers ensured that the building had been evacuated, as church services had just concluded, and confirmed that the fire was located in a second floor classroom," Bertrand said. "Escondido fire units arrived on scene and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin."Crews knocked down the flames in eights minutes, Bertrand said. Five engines and one water truck responded, and no firefighters or churchgoers were injured.A fire investigator responded to the scene and determined that two children started the blaze with a lighter they found in the classroom, Bertrand said. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of hitting and killing an Escondido bicyclist appeared in court Wednesday on unrelated charges. Jamison Connor, 41, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. The charges were unrelated to the deadly hit-and-run and were instead a result of parole violations in which Connor was found with a bag of methamphetamine and a loaded gun during a traffic stop. Also in the truck at the time of the stop was Connor's young son, prosecutors say. The District Attorney's office went into detail outside the courtroom about the arrest. "During their investigation, police noted several signs and symptoms the defendant was under the effect of controlled substances and alcohol," said Assistant DA Chris Campbell. "When they took the defendant out, law enforcement searched the truck. (CNS) - A fire that broke out at a Fallbrook home Friday morning spread to surrounding vegetation, but firefighters halted the blaze at a quarter-acre.The blaze was reported just before 4:45 a.m. at an estimated 3,000-square-foot house in the 40300 block of Sandia Creek Drive, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Pat McEvoy said.North County Fire Protection District crews responded and found the structure fully engulfed, Cal Fire Capt. Thomas Shoots said. Cal Fire crews were called in once the flames spread to the vegetation surrounding the home.By 5:40 a.m., firefighters had halted the spread of the fire at a quarter-acre, Shoots said. Crews were expected to remain on scene for at least two hours to mop up any hot spots.Deputies and neighbors helped evacuate about 50 horses from the property, McEvoy said. No injuries were immediately reported.Both directions of Sandia Creek Drive were shut down near Lynda Lane. 945
Elliot Kreitenberg and his dad started, as he says, "tinkering" with ultraviolet cleaning light back in 2011. They simply wanted to clean basketballs and volleyballs."There’s some concerns about handshakes before and after games in volleyball tournaments and we realized the ball itself can transmit germs from person to person,” Kreitenberg said.Now, their technology that was once used to clean all of those balls - and some hospitals too- is now being manufactured to sanitize airplanes. Back then, they called it the "Germ Ninja."“It looks like a BBQ and you drop a basketball or volleyball and it rolls through and in 15 seconds you can disinfect a ball during a time out,” Kreitenberg said.By the time Kreitenberg, 28, went off to college, he and his family realized something about the airline industry as they took family trips. The planes really needed that same technology.“We realized that airlines don’t have a good way to keep the planes sanitary and we thought maybe there was a way we could apply UV-C there,” Kreitenberg said.So, they re-designed it into the size of a beverage cart and decided to call it the "Germ Falcon." That was in 2014.“And (to) make it fit like a puzzle in the cabin, these wings go over the seats and under the overhead bins and the lights shine up and down and out toward the windows and you can push it up and down the aisle and disinfect all the commonly touched surfaces,” Kreitenberg said.It took them a while to make it fit all the different types and styles of planes. Back then, someone asked Kreitenberg what it would take for the business to take off.“My answer was I’m really not rooting for a pandemic but the experts think we’re overdue for one and we want to work with the airlines to get out in front of it we’re prepared and hopefully we can limit the impact.,” Kreitenberg said.The Kreitenbergs then decided to use it in hospitals. They were in the process of making it work for healthcare when the pandemic he predicted happened.“And then COVID hit and the airlines were in huge demand for our Germ Falcon product line and that’s what this company started on and airlines played a huge role in the way disease spreads around the world and we’re seeing that today,” Kreitenberg said.They started getting flooded with requests from airlines. Which is where Honeywell comes in. They're now partners with the Kreitenbergs and own the manufacturing and sales rights.“We’re taking proven hospital technology that’s been utilized for decades to clean hospitals and we’re now taking that through this product into the aerospace environment and giving the airlines a tool that’s been proven for reducing viruses for years,” Kreitenberg said.Brian Wenig, a general manager within Honeywell's Phoenix based Aerospace component says they're working to get passengers back in the air. The Ultraviolet Cleaning System cleans the aircraft in under 10 minutes.“It has the ability to not only clean the seats and high touch surfaces in the cabin, it also has the ability to clean the aircraft lavatories and the galleys where the crews are working,” Wenig said.They're already in negotiations with airlines and international demos are coming soon. They plan to have 50 available by the end of July and manufacturing 100 per month through the summer. The airlines say one machine can serve five gates to meet the turnaround times between takeoff and landing.The Kreitenbergs say NASA is next. They're working on a zero gravity drone now, like a Roomba for the International Space Station.“I expect you’ll see these in airports and hotels and schools and gyms, athletic facilities and more by the end of 2020 for sure,” Kreitenberg said.He also said it'll be a global household name, or as he says, "The apple of hygiene in the post COVID era." 3792
