CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the suspects accused of stabbing a 15-year-old to death as he tried to defend his friend at a Chula Vista birthday party in late January. According to police, the stabbing took place on January 31 on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista. Police say an argument broke out between two teenagers. The argument later turned physical and, as the 15-year-old -- identified by friends as Devin Griffiths -- tried to help a friend being attacked by several men, he was stabbed in the upper body, according to police. According to police, he “passed away with his family at his side.”Police say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. Investigators believe there is a likelihood witnesses used their cell phones to record the incident and are asking anyone with video to come forward. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One driver was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Chula Vista overnight Saturday. According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the checkpoint was held on the 300 block of East H Street between 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday. More than 3,500 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint, 1,209 were screened, 13 drivers underwent sobriety tests and one was arrested. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are searching for a possible arsonist after four brush fires were set within minutes of each other Thursday morning.Firefighters responded around 3:30 a.m. to the area south of Lake Crest Drive and east of Wueste Road in Eastlake.While crews were working to put out the fire, they received a second fire call nearly three miles away on Eastlake Parkway.The third brush fire happened a short time after on Telegraph Canyon Road, and then the fourth fire broke out near Vista Oak Place.No one was hurt, and firefighters were able to put out all the fires.Witnesses told fire investigators they saw a silver Lexus leaving the scene of the fourth fire around 4:15 a.m.Anyone with information on the suspected arsonist or the incidents is asked to contact the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) at 619-236-6815. 850

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista firefighters quickly put out a fire that started Sunday night near the Teresina Apartments on Santa Cora Avenue. Fire department officials say the call came in at about 9:20 p.m. when a person who lives at the apartments heard noises coming from outside their window. The person who reported the fire told firefighters they saw two kids setting the fire and recording themselves on their cell phones. The witness yelled at them and the kids ran away. The fire burned several trees and got dangerously close to the apartments, forcing the evacuation of one of the buildings. Witnesses tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames while fire crews arrived. A 16-year-old was transported to the hospital for inhaling some of that substance. Chula Vista Fire officials say the incident is possibly related to another fire that broke out on Santa Cora near the same apartments on October 25th. Police are still looking for the two kids responsible, no description was immediately available.  1096
