The U.S. recorded more than 120,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as cases continue to skyrocket across the country.According to Johns Hopkins University, there were 121,888 new cases of COVID-19 recorded across the country on Thursday. That shatters the previous record of 102,000 cases that were reported on Wednesday.Johns Hopkins reports that more than 1,200 people died of the virus in the U.S. on Thursday, the highest death total since Sept. 15. The highest daily death total throughout the pandemic occurred on April 15, when 2,600 people died.According to Johns Hopkins, COVID-19 is currently spreading faster in the U.S. than it is anywhere else in the world. The U.S. has recorded an average of about 80,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last seven days; the country with the second-highest rate of new cases is India, with an average of about 45,000 new cases of the virus each day.Health officials warn that the U.S. is entering what could be the most dangerous and deadly period of the pandemic, as colder weather forces social gatherings indoors, where the virus is more easily spread.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 9,606,369 cases reported in the US, 234,911 being fatal. The Trump administration is planning to expand an operation that would send federal law enforcement agents to Detroit, Cleveland and Milwaukee in the coming weeks, the White House announced Wednesday night.According to a recap of the day's events on the White House website, President Donald Trump and the Department of Justice plan to expand the program into the three Midwestern cities in the next three weeks.Trump and Attorney General William Barr announced Wednesday that they would send federal agents to Chicago and Albuquerque to combat rising crime under the "law and order" push.“In recent weeks there has been a radical movement to defund, dismantle and dissolve our police department,” Trump said Wednesday at a White House event, blaming the movement for “a shocking explosion of shootings, killings, murders and heinous crimes of violence.”“This bloodshed must end,” he said. “This bloodshed will end.”Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Police Chief James Craig and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke out earlier this week after Trump said they were looking into the plan to bring agents to Detroit."There could be no possible justification for such an action. The wife of a Marine veteran self-deported to Mexico on Thursday rather than be arrested by immigration officials.The Associated Press reports that Alejandra Juarez and her eight-year-old daughter boarded a plane at Orlando International Airport Thursday after a teary goodbye with her husband and 16-year-old daughter.Jaurez had been told earlier this week that she would be deported Aug. 3 after Rep. Darren Soto could not pass legislation to keep Jaurez in the US.In a statement issued to CNN earlier this week, ICE says "Juarez was initially apprehended and removed from the country after attempting to enter illegally from Mexico in 1998. The toy run in December is usually one of the big ways Children's Hospital Colorado gets donated toys. But because of COVID-19, the supply of toys is down considerably. So the hospital reached out to some riders, and Sunday, they got a special delivery to help replenish that supply.Kids at Children's Hospital know when they hear those Harley engines roar, toys are on the way."Any motorcycles coming up to the hospital, the kids plaster themselves the windows. They love to see the bikes riding up," volunteer Bob Cuculich said."That's why we do it. It's things like this that make it all worthwhile," organizer Eddie Dane said.But it's not December when this toy run usually happens."Because of COVID this year, the hospital reached out to Rocky Mountain Harley Davidson, because we're a sponsor to the toy run and have been for years," Dane said.Dozens of bikers answered the last minute call to help."They're not reusing toys. So we are are going to replenish their supply and do the best we can to get them some more toys to last them until December," Dane said.They didn't know how many bikers would show. They just knew they needed to try to help the kids."There's a huge need," Cuculich said.But the roars were there, filling up the bins, and they hope more toys can be brought. Just no stuffed animals right now."Plush toys right now, they are just too hard to keep clean, and infection control just makes it a challenge to be able to give those to the kids," Cuculich added.The bikers hope this special delivery makes the kids happy and lasts until the main ride in December.
