BUFFALO, New York — Many 3-to-4-year-old students in Buffalo, New York schools are coming to class without being properly potty trained, teachers in the district are now saying.According to the Buffalo Teachers Federation, teachers and teacher aides often find themselves stepping away from class to change diapers. The union now wants the district to create a specific potty training policy."The bottom line on it is, as far as I'm concerned, children should come to school potty trained,” Phil Rumore, President of the Buffalo Teachers Federation, said. “If they're not it's not the kid's fault." This call stems from a survey of teachers conducted by Rumore, who says there needs to be more guidance from Buffalo Public Schools."What do I do? A child soils himself in my class. Who is going to clean the child up and work with the child and the parents? Apparently there is no answer because there is no policy,” Rumore said."We're willing to continue to dialogue with the aides and their representation in the future to hear their concerns and see if we can find common ground,” BPS General Counsel Nathaniel Kuzma said in a statement.BPS’s current policies and guidelines only include potty training support and education geared toward students with disabilities.Under current guidelines from the State Education Department, “children who are not toilet trained cannot be excluded from either Pre-K or kindergarten enrollment”. NYSED recommends districts work with families to develop a toilet training plan. You can read more about the guidelines 1596

At a White House briefing on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said that the government will have 1.5 million coronavirus tests ready to distribute this week after bipartisan criticism was levied on the government's ability to distribute tests. Pence added that tests are available in all 50 states, giving doctors the ability to better determine whether patients have been sickened with coronavirus. These tests will go to hospitals and labs at state universities. The eventual goal is to make the tests accessible more broadly. "Our objective is to make tests available broadly to the American public," Pence said. "We want to make sure the American people can go to their doctor, can go to the local MedCheck or CVS, and obtain access to coronavirus (tests)."On Tuesday, members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee expressed frustration with the distribution of tests. "I'm sure across the nation are really scared," Sen. Patty Murray said at Tuesday's hearing. "I'm hearing from people who are sick who want to get tested, are not being told where to go. I'm hearing that even when people do get tested and it's very few so far, the results are taking way longer to get back to them. "The administration has had months to prepare for this and it is unacceptable that people in my state and nationwide can't even get an answer as to whether or not they are infected."The announcement comes as the death toll nationwide is up to 11 from coronavirus. It also comes as United Airlines announced that it is cutting back the number of domestic and international flights. Administration officials said that elderly and those with pre-existing conditions should reconsider elective travel. Pence and other members of the coronavirus task force said for the general population, the risk posed by coronavirus is low. 1852

Another Mississippi inmate has died in a troubled state prison. State corrections officials said the death Wednesday appeared to be a suicide by hanging. At least 10 inmates have died in the state's prisons since late December Most were killed in outbursts of violence. Eight of the deaths, including the one Wednesday, happened in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. Violence is a recurring problem in Mississippi prisons, where many jobs for guards are unfilled. Entertainment mogul Jay-Z's charity group, Team Roc, is hosting a prison protest Friday at the Mississippi Capitol. But, state legislators plan to leave Jackson for the weekend on Thursday. 678

BOONE COUNTY, Ky. – Authorities in Kentucky are warning parents of a kidnapping scam. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says the ruse is commonly known as a “virtual kidnapping ransom scam,” and victims describe it as terrifying and very realistic. Two separate families reported that they received random phone calls from a foreign phone number on Monday and Tuesday. When the parents answered, they heard who they thought were their children saying, “They have me” and “I’m in a van,” according to the sheriff’s office.During the first incident, officers say the purported kidnapper told a father, “If you want to see your daughter again, follow my instructions.” He quickly disconnected the call and contacted his wife, who then confirmed that their daughter was safe and still at school. The second call reportedly included similar threats, along with additional demands. The sheriff’s office says the alleged kidnapper demanded, “All the money you have” and followed up with a threat, saying a mother's child would be killed if she hung up on him. While keeping the culprit on the phone, the mother was able to contact deputies who confirmed that her child was safe and still at school. If you or a loved one receives one of these calls, the sheriff’s office says it’s important to remain calm and immediately begin taking the steps to verify the whereabouts of your child.“It is also recommended for everyone to check their social media privacy settings and to verify what information can be viewed by the public on these accounts,” wrote the sheriff’s office. “This information could be used against you to make the scam seem more realistic.” 1656
