SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday night, the Padres will welcome back one of the most iconic characters in franchise history.The Famous San Diego Chicken will return to Petco Park as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration."It's like coming back and seeing family again," says Ted Giannoulas, the man behind the mascot. "It's great. These fans put me on the map. It was their laughter, their good faith over the decades that launched my unique career."The Chicken started in 1974 as a radio station mascot. Over the years, his popularity grew, turning the San Diego favorite in a national phenomenon.But it's been 10 years since the Chicken ruled the roost at a Padres game. The team decided their anniversary season was the right time to welcome him home."As you look back through our 50 year history, it was a piece of our story that we thought really needed to be told this year," says Marketing Director Wayne Partello.As part of the Chicken's return, the team will give away a San Diego Chicken bobble head to every fan at Saturday's game."It's the spitting image of me," says the Chicken, who partnered with the team to make sure they got every detail right, down to the coloring on individual feathers.The Chicken will also sign autographs and take pictures with fans throughout the game. It may be the last time he performs at his home park."I don't know about that for sure," Giannoulas said when asked about his longevity. "It's been 45 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Still many unanswered questions after alleged Poway synagogue shooter appeared at his readiness hearing in San Diego Superior Court.The Deputy District Attorney, David Grapilon, said he doesn't know if this will be a death penalty case and can't tell 10News how the 19-year-old legally obtained the gun used during the shooting.In the state case the shooter faces one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder and a count of arson against an Escondido mosque."We have still not received recordings of the witnesses, we expect that there's going to be firearms analysis which will be crucial for this case, we also expect that there's going to be computer evidence involving my client's computer which is going to be very relevant in this case," Public Defender John O'Connell said.The evidence is already extensive, more than 700 pages handed over from the Deputy District Attorney to the defense. More evidence includes surveillance video of the shooting from the time he entered to the time he left the synagogue."The Sheriff's Department did a pretty exhaustive investigation along with the FBI, and allied agencies and there's a lot of statements of witnesses that we're taking," Grapilon said. He added those statements will be redacted when turned over to the defense.While the shooter's family was in federal court two days ago, no one was in the gallery Thursday.10News went to the family's neighborhood to see how they're faring. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a sex offender and stopped smuggling at sea over the holiday weekend, Customs and Border Patrol officials announced Thursday. Agents spotted a man in East San Diego County about six miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border at 12:30 a.m. on July 6. The 53-year-old Honduran national did not have any documents verifying his residency, officials said. Agents took the unidentified Honduran man to a station for processing. They discovered he had been convicted of sexually assaulting a child and sentenced to prison in New Hampshire in 2008, according to the CBP. The man will be processed for illegal re-entry after removal, officials said. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter made the second significant arrest of the holiday weekend, officials said. The crew intercepted a boat off Point Loma the evening of July 7. Although it appeared to have one person on board, Coast Guard crew members found an additional 12 people suspected of trying to enter the U.S. illegally, officials reported. The group taken into custody included nine men and two women from Mexico, and a Salvadoran man and woman. Border Patrol Agents also arrested 530 people who tried to cross the border illegally over the long weekend. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University kicked off its 2020-21 school year Monday with almost all classes online in an attempt to keep students safe and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.While most classes are virtual this fall semester, there are many students who are still living on campus or having to go to school for other matters.Normally, SDSU would have about 7,500 students living on campus. As of the start of this school year, that number is down to 2,600.In addition to the lower number of students living on campus, the university created strict rules for moving in and having guests.The school is trying a positive messaging approach and hoping they can avoid outbreaks similar to what has happened at other colleges in the U.S.ABC 10News learned one SDSU student tested positive for the virus last week and is in self isolation.SDSU fraternities have imposed their own ban on social events this fall, and all recruitment events will be virtual with no in-person interaction.Fall sports have also been postponed due to the pandemic.The university is not testing students who arrive on campus, but testing is available on site.If students test positive or are exposed to COVID-19, SDSU has a detailed isolation and quarantine plan in place.As if having to deal with the pandemic wasn’t enough for SDSU -- students ABC 10News talked to weren't aware of the nationwide Zoom outages Monday, as classes were just beginning, and the school did not immediately responded as to whether the issues affected any of the first day's classes. 1562

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses.It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment.The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted.The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. Raquel Cusi said her four kids ask when they can go back to SeaWorld on a daily basis."For me I feel like I’ve been born and raised in San Diego, SeaWorld is a staple, and the fact that we can’t be there is sad, so I think it’ll be really awesome for San Diego families," said Cusi.Claudia Harris is a mom of three and said her kids love going to see the killer whales. In a zoom call, the kids all shared their excitement."I’m so excited to watch the killer whale show because the whales are so cool," said her son, while holding a whale toy.SeaWorld is joining the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway in partial reopenings, but a LEGOLAND spokesperson said they have not been told when that park will reopen.
