SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans fled Hurricane Lane's path taking flights Thursday evening from the Hawaiian islands to California.The first time a hurricane will make landfall on the islands since 1992, inspiring fear in vacationers and those who are hunkering down.RELATED: San Diego rescue teams head to Hawaii for Hurricane Lane"Some of the rain would be so loud you couldn’t even talk, you’d be yelling at one another," Steven Bohn said. He moved from San Diego to the big island two years ago for his fiance, who is attending pharmacy school.He said the bands of weather leading up to the brunt of the storm started hitting faster, leaving shorter windows of respite."It looks like it might be coming back pretty soon I don’t think I want to stand out here too long," Bohn said. "The floodwaters have completely destroyed the Bayfront. The downtown road area, there’s no access there whatsoever the cops have blocked that off."He's an occupational therapist and told 10News he was making calls earlier in the day, checking on his clients and ensuring they didn't need medications or help evacuating.He said emergency crews patrolled the area about every 45 minutes, keeping everyone safe. Other signs of disaster preparation were visible in stores, full of bare shelves.Bohn said they're prepared."We’ll be staying indoors," he said. "Closing all the windows and pulling all the shades down in case of the glass."Bohn believes Hawaiians will endure, and said "I’m just hoping that Oahu, Maui, Kawai even the small island of Lanai, they all are going to be okay, and hunker down and get ready for a rough one."In San Diego, passengers sighed a breath of relief as they waited at baggage claim."We have kindergarten starting for my little daughter here on Monday, she’s very excited, and it’s important we made it back," Essam Khouri said.His in-laws are still on Maui. He said their flight was canceled and they're sheltering in place until they can fly back on Saturday.Carolyn Krebs said they made the decision Tuesday, after seeing the latest hurricane path projection, to cut their vacation short."We called Alaska airlines and changed our flight and paid a lot of extra money but at the end of the day it was a good call we’re home safe," Krebs said.Everyone was thankful to be home safe. 2380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego says it plans to begin repopulating its campus this summer, with about 30% of courses being held in person this fall.The campus says in-person classes will be limited to less than 50 students per class or 50% classroom capacity, whichever is lower. Any classes with more than 50 students enrolled will be offered remotely.Some classes will also be held in a hybrid format. The fall quarter is set to begin on Sept. 28, with student arrivals to campus being staggered to protect the capacity for testing."We aim to mitigate risk in a way that will allow UC San Diego to provide an environment for learning and offer a university experience that our students expect," said Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. "As one of the nation’s leading research universities, we have risen to meet difficult circumstances and responded with innovation every step of the way."For students attending in-person classes, facial coverings will be required, according to the school. Students will also be tested for COVID-19 monthly and when moving in on campus.UCSD plans to offer regular coronavirus testing to students, faculty, and staff, with higher frequency in testing for those who are at higher risk for infection. The campus says there will be no cost for asymptomatic or symptomatic testing for students, faculty, and staff when done at a UC San Diego Health location or through Student Health Services.“Our adaptive model considers the most current science on transmission and infection risk and will drive our determinations on the testing frequency of our various campus populations,” said project lead Natasha Martin, associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. “We wanted a simple, easy testing process which can be delivered at scale in the fall to ensure widespread testing for early outbreak detection.“Our simulations indicate that if more than 75 percent of the population were tested per month, we would be able to detect an outbreak before there are 10 detectable infections on campus,” she said.Students aren't thrilled at the impact the coronavirus is having on their college experience."You can't really make new friends and meet new people and do many projects strictly online," Dylan Nelson said. He will be an incoming Junior at UC San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When COVID-19 forced everyone in, it also forced Canyon Crest Academy students Erika and Vivian to get creative"When quarantine and school closures became a reality for us, I really wanted to give back to society and especially how it's been draining resources for hospitals that are on the front lines, I wanted to use my skillset to provide in any way I can," said Erika. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate.The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president.There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history.But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate.
