SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Looking for a summer job? The City of San Diego is hoping to fill 46 positions at city pools. According to the city, all 46 lifeguard and pool management positions are available at 13 different facilities. Anyone interested has to attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming skills and qualify to enroll in the city’s lifeguard training program. RELATED: State offers money to help boost college savings accounts Tryouts are being held Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the Tierrasanta Pool from 5 – 7 p.m. and Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Vista Terrace Pool in San Ysidro from 9 – 10 a.m.Those who pass will need to attend a week-long lifeguard training program. The course teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. The program costs 1 and scholarships are available, the city says. Participants who graduate the program will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Air certifications and will qualify to work as a lifeguard at city pools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Investors are watching carefully to see if interest rates keep dropping, or if they may eventually dip below zero in the United States.Recently, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan said it's a possibility, as rates have remained historically low for the past few years.In San Diego, the results of a negative interest rate would be good news for some and bad news for others."Low rates are a double-edged sword," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "If you're a borrower, if you're looking to buy a house today, mortgage rates have never been lower. But if you're a saver and you have money in the bank or in a CD, your rates are pretty poor."Brewster says the interest rate tends to drop when growth in the US is slow, both for the population and the Gross Domestic Product. He says that's what's happening now, as the baby boomer generation is getting older and later generations have fewer children. Brewster says slower population growth leads to slower economic growth because there are fewer people in the workforce, which means company production is down, and so is spending. He says that is happening despite record low unemployment.As for negative interest, Brewster says the average San Diego shouldn't worry since it's unlikely to happen."I wouldn't change your long term plans," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Law enforcement agencies in San Diego County have a new tool in the fight against child predators: Southern California’s first electronics-sniffing dog. Willow, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador, is trained to sniff out the chemical used to coat all kinds of electronic storage media, including microSD cards, thumb drives, hard drives, cell phones and tablets.She works in partnership with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.“Our whole goal with ICAC is to save kids,” said Willow’s handler Ron Burleson. “If they’ve got any homemade images, there’s a kid out there that needs to be rescued, needs to be found. So that can make all the difference in the world when we can find that hidden media.”RELATED: Dog eats marijuana, develops 'scary' symptomsK9s have a long history in law enforcement as drug, arson and bomb-sniffing dogs, but this sniffing specialty has only been around since 2012, when Connecticut State Police trained the world’s first electronic storage detection K9. The breakthrough came after Connecticut State Police chemist Dr. Jack Hubball discovered that all media with a circuit board -- like hard drives, thumb drives and SD cards -- is covered with a chemical to prevent overheating called triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO). Once trained, dogs will sniff out the chemical for a reward. San Diego ICAC will have about 2,000 cases this year, he said.When she’s not working, Willow lives with Burleson. “I’ve had many requests that the next time any friends or family lose their cell phone, they want me to bring Willow over,” he said.The funding to buy Willow, who cost about ,000, came from the San Diego Police Foundation through an anonymous donor, Burleson said. 2667
