SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver struck a fire hydrant outside San Diego International Airport Saturday, causing water to rocket into the sky outside Terminal 2 and headaches inside the airport.Terminal 2's East entrance on West Harbor Drive was temporarily closed after the driver struck the hydrant along the terminal's departure lanes around 10:40 a.m. Airport officials also closed Terminal 2 East's concessions and directed all traffic through Terminal 1.At one point, vehicles backed up onto Harbor Dr. as drivers encountered the closure caused by the geyser, according to a witness. Fire crews worked feverishly for about two hours, as gallons of water and kicked up rocks showered them below, before the water was turned off around 12:35 p.m. 753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of rising juniors at Del Norte knows navigating middle and high school can be hard, and doing it virtually, can be even harder."Staying alone in the house and social distancing has made it hard to hang out with friends but with this platform, they can learn from their community and learn from their community's experiences." In July, they created Light the Way Project and have been helping peers across San Diego, the U.S., and the world with virtual peer-to-peer webinars followed by Q & A sessions."When we talk about our experiences people younger than us they feel better and reassured about the future," said one of the group's administrators. "People appreciate we're doing this especially in a pandemic." The group covers relevant topics like competitive culture, dealing with stress and anxiety, and managing your time when learning from home. "We talked about different strategies such as sleep schedules, managing priorities, divide and conquer strategies, and how to take productive breaks."They promote their events through social media, word of mouth, and forums like NextDoor. Eighty-five students hopped in on their first webinar in July, their most recent one drew in over 100."We noticed there's a lot of research and literature behind positive effects with peer mentorship as it alleviates stress and anxiety."The group is planning a summit in January tailored to those with an interest in engineering. 1461

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego Health is opening a new clinic Monday in the Carmel Valley neighborhood.The 8,700-square-foot clinic, located at 6030 Village Way, will offer primary care and women's health services, according to UCSD Health. X-ray services and express care will be added to the clinic in 2021."Like all of our clinics, the Pacific Highland Ranch clinic is designed to support appropriate physical distancing, said UCSD Health Physician Group CEO Dr. Christopher Kane. "Patients can check in for an appointment and pay any copays using a contact-free option at a guest kiosk or with a mobile application."Walk-ins will be accepted at the clinic, which will be open eight hours a day, seven days a week, to address common health needs, including coughs, colds and simple fractures or sprains.In 2019, UCSD Health opened a clinic in Encinitas -- which offers pediatrics, primary care and express care -- and a clinic in Eastlake offering primary care, express care and imaging capabilities.UCSD Health also opened a clinic in the Rancho Bernardo area in 2018 that offers urgent care, advanced imaging, an optical boutique, primary care, women's health, occupational medicine, behavioral health, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology and a retail pharmacy open to the public.Flu immunizations are also available at all clinics for the 2020-2021 flu season.An annual flu vaccine is especially important this year with flu season coinciding with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to UCSD Health. 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego resident was extradited back to the U.S. to face terrorism charges in federal court.Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, a 34-year-old Canadian national, appeared in court Friday on charges that he conspired with several other Canadian and U.S. citizens to provide material support to terrorists in Syria.Prosecutors said Douglas McCain, known as the first American to die fighting for the Islamic State in 2014, was among those Abdullahi conspired with between 2013 and 2014.Prosecutors say Abdullahi and co-conspirators provided personnel and money to individuals engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, including the killing, kidnapping, and maiming of persons. Officials added that Abdullahi facilitated the travel of at least three Canadian nationals and two U.S. citizens to Syria to join and fight with ISIS.Those individuals were reportedly later killed fighting for ISIS.As part of their plans to provide financial support, Abdullahi's co-conspirators encouraged others to commit crimes, such as theft, prosecutors say. Abdullahi is charged with committing an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Canada to finance travel."Terrorist networks like ISIS cannot exist without supporters," said U.S. attorney Robert Brewer. "Protecting Americans from terrorists is our highest priority, and we will work hard to bring justice to those who provide material support to foreign terror organizations."Abdullahi was detained and deemed a flight risk and danger to the community following his hearing Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog owner is making desperate plea for the return of her puppy after a burglary at her Spring Valley home."Up all night crying ... I can barely see through my eyes," said Ashley Morales.The Morales' family dog Snuffles, a 4-month old Pekachu, was inside their condo just after 9 a.m. Sunday. Two of Morales' children, ages 11 and 13, were sleeping in a bedroom when the strangers broke in. She and her husband weren't planning on being gone long. They were going to the grocery store to buy items for breakfast.Morales and her husband left the door unlocked, and that is how the intruders got in. A neighbor called them during their shopping trip to report something suspicious.When the couple got home less than an hour later, they made a terrifying discovery. Their bedroom was ransacked. A few feet away, their kids' bedroom was untouched. The door had been shut and her kids had slept through it. "We ran upstairs and hugged our kids. This could have turned out so much worse," said Morales.Deputies say the suspects were captured in a neighbor's surveillance camera, which shows them walking in and out of the condo. In one clip, a woman is seen walking out with what appears to be a television. Morales say they also got away with a box of her jewelry."Some of the jewelry my father gave me before he passed away," said Morales.But Morales says her most painful loss is her puppy, which was nowhere to be found. Morales believes the intruders took him."My dog doesn't leave anywhere. If he had gotten out, he would have stayed close to home. I felt like one of my kids was kidnapped.
