SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 20-year-old woman claims she was sexually assaulted for about 20 minutes during a Lyft ride in June.She's identified as Jane Roe in a civil lawsuit filed by Estey & Bomberger, LLP on Thursday. Roe tells 10News she has a disability and is unable to drive, she relies on Lyft to get to and from UCSD and around San Diego on a daily basis."I would use Lyft every day for about a year and a half," said Roe. "I would use it about 2-3 times a day."In June, Roe says she was using Lyft to travel from her father's home to her mother's, a 32-minute ride on the Interstate 5 that would forever change her life.RELATED: San Diego women reported in Uber, Lyft sex assault cases"He just asked me inappropriate questions," Roe said, referring to her driver. "He was commenting about inappropriate behaviors that he likes to do."Roe said the driver then told her to sit in the front passenger's seat, and out of fear she complied."The man.. he started touching me.. he groped my vagina, he groped my inner thighs, my thighs, my hamstrings," Roe said. She said the assault lasted between 15 and 20 minutes."I was kind of in a state of shock," Roe said. But Roe and her attorney, Mike Bomberger, say Lyft has been unresponsive."One of the things we don't know is what happened to the driver," Bomberger said.Roe and Bomberger allege that Lyft is not doing enough to keep passengers safe."Lyft fails to cooperate with police when there's an assault. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado Police officer who was among the first to arrive at the Spreckels Mansion after the death of Rebecca Zahau testified Monday in the wrongful death civil case.Zahau’s death was ruled a suicide in 2011 but her family believes she was killed. They sued Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend.Adam Shacknai called 911 to report the body hanging from the balcony.TIMELINE: Rebecca Zahau?caseIn testimony Monday, the unidentified officer said his duty was to go through the home and make sure no one was still inside, deeming it safe for investigators to enter. Investigators would later find a single boot print on the balcony where Zahau’s nude body was found bound and hanging. The shoe print would end up being one key piece of evidence. Investigators needed to find out who it belonged to, and if someone else was with Zahau before her body was discovered.SLIDESHOW: Coronado death investigationThe Zahau family lawyer is trying to prove Adam Shacknai was with her and played a role in her death. Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is not a single piece of evidence that ties him to Zahau’s death.  His DNA was never found at the scene, and there were no eyewitness accounts to support the Zahau family’s claim, lawyers say. The officer on the witness stand was questioned about the shoe print by Keith Greer, Zahau’s family lawyer.“Do you know whether or not that footprint on the deck is yours?” Greer asked.“Personally I do not, but I’ve been told that it is,” replied the officer.He said as part of the investigation, his boots were taken in as evidence.Investigators later determined the print was accidentally left behind by the officer during his sweep of the home.The same officer who testified answered questions from Shacknai’s lawyers about a call he responded to at the home days before Zahau’s death.Zahau’s boyfriend’s son, Max Shacknai, had suffered a life-threatening fall inside of the home while in her care.“Once I entered the house I saw a small boy on the ground with some debris on him,” said the officer.He went on to say he remembers seeing Zahau very emotional and crying, but doesn’t remember directly speaking with her.A PERT counselor, a fingerprint expert and a handwriting expert are also expected to testify Monday. 2314

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group called "Pillars of the Community" is working to make sure people inside San Diego county jails are registered and able to vote. The non-profit based out of southeast San Diego hires inmates to work from the inside. Their efforts were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic this year but they're still hiring and trying to gather information to support their request to have polling places put inside the jails. 443

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former North County contractor who pleaded guilty to several charges, including grand theft, received a five-year sentence on Monday.Prosecutors said Marc Morningstar owes thousands of dollars to more than a dozen former customers. Team 10 first exposed Morningstar in early 2017 after several people contacted Team 10 about his questionable business practices. Morningstar pleaded guilty to failure to file a tax return, two counts of grand theft of personal property, and using personal identifying information of another person. He also admitted to two misdemeanors—failure to secure payment of compensation and contracting without a license.The judge sentenced him to local custody. He will receive credit for the time he has already served, which was more than 200 days. He also owes 13 victims nearly ,000, according to deputy district attorney Amy Lafer.During the hearing, Morningstar’s girlfriend Maria Meeuwisse requested to address the court. She said she is a victim of Morningstar as well.“He will not be living with me when he gets out, whenever he does get out. He has used my social security number,” she told the judge. Meeuwisse previously pleaded guilty to her role in the scheme, which included a misdemeanor of contracting without a license and failure to secure payment of compensation.Judge Timothy Walsh said that Morningstar has to “rethink the way he approaches his life.” 1430

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category.
