NEW YORK (AP) — A statue of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be built in her native Brooklyn. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the memorial Saturday. Ginsburg died Friday of complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87. A legal trailblazer and champion of women’s rights, she became the high court’s second female justice in 1993. Cuomo, a Democrat, said that he’ll appoint a commission to choose an artist and oversee the selection of a location for the statue. Nominations for the 61st Grammy Awards were announced Friday and one of the nominees was brought to tears live on television.Singer Janelle Monáe -- along with Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes -- announced some the nominees on "CBS This Morning." Monáe became emotional when her "Dirty Computer" was announced for album of the year.She said she was moved because the project is "about community," especially the LGBT community of which she is a part."I hope they feel seen," Monáe said. "I hope they feel loved and I hope they feel celebrated."Rap artists Kendrick Lamar and Drake received the most nominations with eight and seven, respectively. Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile received six nominations.Fans of H.E.R., the singer/musician who wears sunglasses and guards her privacy to keep the focus on her music, had plenty to celebrate with her multiple nominations.She scored nods for best R&B album, album of the year and best new artist.Female artists dominated top categories this year. NEW YORK -- Michael Casey is picking up the pieces after some protesters turned violent and destroyed his business, Maxwell’s Bar & Restaurant, in New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood“We had to put together a makeshift border so no more looters would come in,” he said.This former New York City firefighter served his community for 13 years. When medical issues forced Casey out of the department, he invested his life savings and built this bar with his friends and family.“My daughter’s first birthday was there,” Casey said. “Her christening was there. It was a real kick to the…it was tough.”Tough, Casey says, both emotionally and financially.Casey says COVID-19 concerns forced him to shut down his business for three months. Without any income, he wasn’t able to pay insurance on his property.“We had to pick and choose what we can pay and what we can’t pay to try to get back up on our feet,” he said. “One of the costs we were not able to incur was our insurance.”After the looting, Casey had to let go of dozens of employees. Now, he’s filing for personal bankruptcy.“We’re done. There’s too much destruction,” he said. “The bills keep piling up. The phone calls keep coming in.”Even after what he calls “senseless destruction,” Casey still believes in the beauty of humanity and New York City.He also added that he has an obligation to his community.“I feel like I’d be letting them down and letting the community down if I decided to walk away now,” Casey said.This former firefighter is now focusing on reopening his Harlem location, saying he needs to be an example of positivity -- especially during destruction.“I never thought twice about running into a burning building; I still wouldn’t think twice about it,” he said. “I would put my life on the line for anybody, even after all this.” 1817

NOGALES, Ariz. – In the war on drugs, the U.S.-Mexico border is the front line.According to Customs and Border Protection, the pandemic is changing how the cartel and other drug organizations are getting narcotics across and into the United States.“Initially we were seeing small football-shaped bundles [full of drugs] being thrown over the fence,” said Sabri Dickman, the border patrol agent in charge along a 33-mile stretch of border near Nogales, Arizona. “We’ve seen that expand to backpack operations with 100-plus pounds to catching vehicles loaded with 600-plus pounds.”The Nogales border crossing is one of the most exploited by Mexican drug organizations. According to CBP, of the more than 200 known underground tunnels that are used to traffic drugs across the southern border, 114 are located in Nogales.It also is one of the busiest as the Mariposa Port of Entry, the main thoroughfare between the countries in Nogales, ushers million in merchandise between the United States and Mexico each day, according to CBP.Mariposa Port Director Michael Humphries says 98% of the traffic that comes through the port is legal, but the 2% is now being used to traffic more hard narcotics like fentanyl, a synthetic opioid similar to morphine, but around 50 to 100 times more potent which makes it lethal even in small doses. Humphries says the hard narcotics are smaller, making them easier to conceal and transport as more can be trafficked in one trip.“We’ve seen an increase in fentanyl over the last year,” said Humphries. “Nogales is a small city [of] 20,000 people. Those tablets of fentanyl weren’t coming to the border. It was going way beyond. It was going to Vermont, and Ohio, Kentucky, and Detroit.”Humphries says in June alone, CBP seized 875,000 tablets of fentanyl from smugglers. It was part of a year that saw officers seize 9,500 pounds of methamphetamine, 900 pounds of fentanyl, and 1,000 pounds of heroine, even though traffic through the port has decreased 60 to 70% because of travel restrictions imposed because of the pandemic.Humphries says those restrictions have led drug organizations to recruit more Americans to smuggle their drugs instead of Mexican or Central American nationals, since U.S. citizens can travel more freely across the border. 2290

NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. United will continue to lead on testing, while at the same time exploring new solutions that contribute to the safest travel experience possible."United said Premise Health is administering the rapid testing pilot program.Travelers flying into the UK still face a mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to the US Embassy in the United Kingdom. 1426
