SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - She lived through the depression and into the cyber age. And now Marian Walter is getting the red carpet treatment for her 106th birthday.Staff at Merrill Gardens at Oceanside say they were shocked to learn Walter was turning 106 because she's one of the most alive, intelligent, and funny people they've ever met.Walter was born in Brooklyn in 1913 and went on to earn a PhD. in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. She speaks seven languages and loved traveling the world. "Italy has just everything in the way of art, you know? It was wonderful. I hated to leave there!" said Walter. Her advice on staying forever-young is to work hard and never stop learning. "Learn as much as you can under any conditions you can do it!" said Walter.As for her birthday wish for the world, "Happiness, decentness. God wants us all to get along with one another. To help one another. To understand one another." Walter has two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The Mayor of Oceanside also paid a visit to Walter, honoring her with a certificate of recognition. 1142

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Standing outside his Vista headquarters on Wednesday, Republican Darrell Issa told reporters that he's comfortable he'll stay ahead of opponent Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in the run for a seat in California's 50th congressional district.“Statistically, it’s impossible for him to win with probably 60,000 votes left to come in,” he told reporters.Issa is a veteran politician looking to return to Congress after a two-year hiatus. He represented coastal North County's 49th district until 2018 but decided not to run for re-election as that district turned blue.“I've already spoken with Congressional leadership and I’m planning to go back to what will be a very unusual freshman orientation for someone with 18 years [of experience],” he added.ABC 10News spoke to Campa-Najjar on Tuesday after polls closed when early returns showed that he and Issa were still neck and neck. At the time he said, “Obviously, we know we've had a strong campaign that put people before politics and country before party and it is showing in this ruby red district. We're transcending partisanship.”The 31-year-old has continued trying to flip the historically red district which spans parts of East, North, and Riverside counties. He previously lost to former congressman Duncan Hunter who resigned this year after pleading guilty to a felony campaign fraud charge.On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar’s office declined a request for an interview but sent the following statement:“We’re still looking at the returns with a measure of hope and urge every last vote be counted. The fact that it took the former wealthiest member of congress to try and buy this seat proves how formidable our people-powered campaign is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University's men's basketball team has returned to the top ten in the national polls for the first time in five years, reaching number seven in the AP and Coach's Polls released Monday. The Aztecs are 15-0 to start the season, making them one of just two undefeated teams remaining in Division One. The other team is Auburn. Head Coach Brian Dutcher says the team is handling the success well, refusing to be distracted. He told 10News that the growing buzz about his team is reminiscent of the program's glory years at the beginning of the decade, when rising star Kawhi Leonard led the team to conference championships and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.RELATED: San Diego State's stadium effort gets -million donation"It makes a difference," Dutcher said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's flu season has hit a record high.More than 20,000 lab-confirmed cases have been reported this season in San Diego, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. The 20,131 total this season is the highest recorded number of lab-confirmed cases since city leaders began tracking the virus 20 years ago.At this time last season, there were only 5,203 lab-confirmed cases.RELATED: CDC says flu season finally peaked but that it's far from over"The high number is the result of an unusually severe flu season but also due to better reporting and tracking by the local medical community and the County,” Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said.There have been 247 new flu cases reported in the last week.
