FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WCPO) -- A firefighter in Franklin Township, Ohio who posted a racial slur on his Facebook page saying he'd save a dog over a black person has resigned, according to The Journal-News.Tyler Roysdon submitted his resignation late Monday night, township officials told the newspaper, after his racially charged comment got him suspended on Sept. 12.Roysdon’s since-deleted Facebook post has made national news. He purportedly stated that, given the choice, he would save a dog before a black person -- posting “one dog is worth a million” and then using the N-word.Before his resignation, Middletown NAACP chapter president Dora Bronston called for Roysdon to be fired, saying a firefighter's job is "to be there for every person that calls on your help.""This person is 20 years old - apparently not mature enough to be a firefighter," Bronston said. "We trust those people with our lives to protect us, to keep us safe our families safe, and we don't want them to put us in harm's way."Without authority to fire Roysdon, Township Fire Chief Steve Bishop had placed Roysdon on indefinite suspension pending a disciplinary hearing. Township trustees had scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Roysdon for Sept. 27. 1297

Following the CDC's recent No Sail Order extension , cruise lines say they'll not only create a bubble, but they'll test everyone who steps onboard. The tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, and industry leaders say people are ready to take their coronavirus precautions and set sail.“We’ve been out of California, we’ve done all the Mexican, Caribbean, Bahama, Alaska, Hawaii, we’re planning on Panama Canal next year. After that we want to go to Europe and do a riverboat cruise,” said Betsy Atwood, a passenger on 37 past cruises.When she's not "cruising,” Atwood calls Vassar, Michigan, home. She was onboard a ship last spring when cruise lines were ordered back home. Ever since then, she's been ready to get back out on the high seas.“They need to sail, they need to get them going. You’re safer on the ship then you are to the grocery store. They’re so clean to begin with and I know now they’re cleaner than they were before,” Atwood said.Cleaning is just one part of the broad plan to get passengers back said Joe Leon, vice president of field sales for Silversea in the Americas. Silversea in the Americas is the luxury arm of Royal Caribbean and its ships only carry 600 people on board, which is small by industry standards. Emanuel Samson is charged with killing one and injuring six others.He's locked up, but makes calls from his cell and all of them are recorded. Nashville-based WTVF obtained an exclusive copy of those recorded calls.They provide a first look at the mindset of an accused murderer.The 25-year-old Samson is being held in the Davidson County Jail. He's said very little to police, but Samson does plenty of talking by phone."This honestly reminds me of our childhood, you know. You're locked in a room or a house. You're locked in a room. You're locked in your house," said Samson in one call, describing jail life.Samson's now spent the past month in the county jail – held without bond – and in this call he seems to be settling in."You know it's about meditating on the fact that I literally can't afford not to be strong. Period. By any means necessary," said Samson.He's made more than 140 calls in the past month, mostly collect to friends and family. It seems he's been warned by his attorney not to talk about his case, though he may at times, speaking in what sounds like his native Sudanese language.However, we did not hear Samson discuss the murder of Melanie Crow Smith or the other felony charges to come. In conversations – especially with a girlfriend – both she and Samson seem oblivious to the seriousness of the charges against him."Please dream about me baby. I dream about you every night," she said. "Aw, baby, we had so many plans for our future. You know?""And we still do. So many plans. Don't say we did because we still do," Samson told her.
