In the largest U.S. evacuation of the pandemic, more than half a million people were ordered to flee the Gulf Coast on Tuesday as Laura strengthened into a hurricane that forecasters said could slam Texas and Louisiana with ferocious winds, heavy flooding and the power to push seawater miles inland.More than 385,000 residents were told to flee the Texas cities of Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur, and another 200,000 were ordered to leave low-lying Calcasieu Parish in southwestern Louisiana, where forecasters said as much as 13 feet (4 meters) of storm surge topped by waves could submerge whole communities.Forecasters Tuesday night expected the storm to increase in strength by 33%, from 90 mph (144 kmh) to 120 mph (193 kmh) in just 24 hours. The waters are very warm where the storm is now and will be for the entire path up until the Gulf Coast,” National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Ed Rappaport said.Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Laura is shaping up to look a lot like Hurricane Rita did 15 years ago when it ravaged southwest Louisiana.“We’re going to have significant flooding in places that don’t normally see it,” he said.Ocean water was expected to push onto land along more than 450 miles (724 kilometers) of coast from Texas to Mississippi. Hurricane warnings were issued from San Luis Pass, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana, and storm surge warnings from the Port Arthur, Texas, flood protection system to the mouth of the Mississippi River.The evacuations could get even bigger if the storm’s track veers to the east or west, said Craig Fugate, the former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Fearing that people would not evacuate in time, Edwards said those in southwest Louisiana need to be where they intend to ride out Laura by noon Wednesday, when the state will start feeling the storm’s effects.Officials urged people to stay with relatives or in hotel rooms to avoid spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. It’s not uncommon to convert an old warehouse into lofts or apartments.But what about converting something a little more unique, a little more historic?Something like, a church?That’s what developers did in a Denver, Colorado neighborhood. The Gothic-revival, Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1889, designed by Denver architect Franklin E. Kidder. It was declared an historic landmark in 1970. But that didn't stop it from ending up abandoned as the neighborhood changed.Enter developers with a vision. They re-envisioned the church as The Sanctuary Lofts. They preserved much of the church’s unique features, like the stained-glass windows, exposed brick, and wood paneling, and converted the church into condominiums. There’s even a confessional in one of the condos serving as the room’s focal point.One of the 12 condos in this church was recently on the market. Realtor David Wheaton said each unit offers different pieces of the past. “In some units we actually have stained glass windows exposed and holy items that were a part of the church that are actually infused into the units," said Wheaton. “Many of these buildings such as this church, the congregation wasn’t able to support it financially. It kind of fell into disrepair for a while and it was deconsecrated at some time.”While this conversion was done long before the current housing crisis, it underscores the need to find places to live. In this case, the condos come with a completely unique twist on what’s possible.This converted church is just one example of creative living makeovers.The Arcade, the first indoor shopping mall in the United States, is now home to 48 apartments.  The Arcade is in Providence, Rhode Island and was built in 1828. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark.In Charleston, South Carolina, the Cigar Factory is another example of an historic building beginning a new chapter.  It was built in 1881 as a cotton manufacturing facility before converting to cigar production in 1903. While plans to transform it into condos 100 years later were ultimately scrapped, it’s now home to office, restaurant and event space.  2265

INDIANAPOLIS — The first officers to respond to a reported stabbing in Indianapolis Sunday night walked into a chaotic scene: shards of broken glass strewn about the floor; a wig that had been forcibly ripped off someone’s head; and blood smeared from one end of an apartment’s hallway to another.Just inside one of the units at the St. George Apartments police found 45-year-old Vickie Jackson collapsed on the floor. She had been stabbed multiple times and was in extremely grave condition. She was pronounced dead 35 minutes later at Methodist Hospital.Surveillance video obtained by investigators shed light on the chaos.According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Marion County court Monday, a camera captured Jackson and another woman, later identified as 35-year-old Tashawanna Wilson, fighting in the hallway.In the video, police say, Wilson can be seen breaking a wine bottle against Jackson. Wilson then allegedly used the top portion of the broken bottle to stab Jackson numerous times.Police broadcast a description of Wilson, and an officer located her a short time later on the campus of the Tindley Genesis Academy at 24th Street and Capitol Avenue. Wilson was reportedly covered in blood and carrying a hatchet, which was also covered in blood.According to police, Wilson admitted to striking Jackson with a wine bottle during a fight and to going to a friend’s house to change clothing afterward.Wilson was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder and booked into the Marion County Jail without bond. As of Monday afternoon, prosecutors were still reviewing the case against her for a final charging decision.Court records show Wilson has previously been charged three times with battery in Marion County, most recently in February 2013. She pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement in that case and was sentenced to time served. 1874
