Security lines and close human interaction at airports could one day be a thing of the past.With the travel industry determined to get people flying again, experts say the motivation to innovate is in overdrive.Airports have a way of fueling anxiety; one misstep can send even the most seasoned travelers into new heights of annoyance.So, could it ever be an experience we actually look forward to? Instead, passengers could be screened with biometric facial recognition technology.It’s already a reality at Dubai International’s smart tunnel, which the government says gets travelers through passport control in 15 seconds.LAX has tested this technology with passengers boarding flights, so they don't have to pull out their boarding pass."Through surveys, we’ve done over the years…seen people are willing to consent to give up identity aspects to get through the process faster,” Erbaci said.And carry-on bags could be screened using remotely-operated X-ray machines.While a completely self-service experience is likely several years away, changes are being implemented now to improve TSA screenings.“We have new technology that has been rolled out at dozens of airports across the country that allows the traveler to insert their ID or scan their own passport,” said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers.Dankers says the agency is looking at innovations being used around the world.“They test to make sure they don’t compromise security in the airport environment,” she explained. “We look to those cutting-edge technologies to make sure we are on the forefront of that.“We can’t think we’re going to be able to recover from an unprecedented situation by using old methods and means. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco supervisors moved a step closer Tuesday to becoming the first city in the U.S. to ban all sales of electronic cigarettes to crack down on youth vaping.In a unanimous vote, supervisors approved a ban on the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes. They also endorsed a ban on manufacturing of e-cigarettes on city property. The measures will require a subsequent vote before becoming law."We spent the '90s battling big tobacco, and now we see its new form in e-cigarettes," Supervisor Shamann Walton said.The supervisors acknowledged that the legislation would not entirely prevent youth vaping, but they hoped it would be a start."This is about thinking about the next generation of users and thinking about protecting the overall health and sending a message to the rest of the state and the country: Follow our lead," Supervisor Ahsha Safaí said.City Attorney Dennis Herrera said young people "have almost indiscriminate access to a product that shouldn't even be on the market." Because the Food and Drug Administration has not yet completed a study to assess the public health consequences of e-cigarettes and approved or rejected them, he said, "it's unfortunately falling to states and localities to step into the breach."Most experts agree that e-cigarettes are less harmful than the paper-and-tobacco variety because they do not produce all the cancer-causing byproducts found in cigarette smoke. Over the phone, a Costco employee in Santee told 10News that more than 1,500 seniors showed up on Tuesday and the store hasn't been that busy since Christmas or Thanksgiving. SAN MARCOS (CNS) - Palomar College will break ground today on a new on-site food pantry that will help meet the massive demand of students facing food insecurity.The future Anita and Stan Maag Food and Nutrition Center will offer a modern, bigger home for the college's food pantry, which has been in operation for over three decades. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies say a father has been arrested months after the death of his infant child in Santee.Daniel Charles Marshall, 34, was arrested on Thursday by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and booked into San Diego Central jail for murder and child abuse resulting in death, according to the Sheriff's Department (SDSO).On April 22, 2020, Santee Fire Department responded to a home in the 8600 block of Paseo Del Rey in Santee to a report of a seven-month-old infant in medical distress.
