Sales of existing homes in the country broke new records, spurred by ultra-low mortgage rates and after a three-month slump earlier this year during coronavirus pandemic lock downs.Home buyers snapped up a dwindling supply of houses in July, leading to a 24.7 percent increase in the number of homes sold over the previous month.The July 2020 surge in purchases reported Friday by the National Association of Realtors marked the second straight month of accelerating sales. June had reached its own high mark, with a more than 20 percent increase in sales over May.Existing homes are defined as single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops.With July’s increase, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.86 million, purchases are now up 8.7% from a year ago. In July 2019, there were 5.39 million sales.“The housing market is well past the recovery phase and is now booming with higher home sales compared to the pre-pandemic days,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist. “With the sizable shift in remote work, current homeowners are looking for larger homes and this will lead to a secondary level of demand even into 2021.”Total housing inventory at the end of July totaled 1.5 million units, a year ago there were 1.9 million available units.“More homes need to be built,” Yun said in a statement on NAR’s website.Properties are staying on the market for an average of 22 days. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A DUI/Driver's License checkpoint in the Mission Bay area of San Diego resulted in 11 arrests, police said Saturday morning.More than 660 vehicles went through the checkpoint at 2600 Ingraham St., between 11:20 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday and nearly 600 of those vehicles were screened, according to Officer Mark McCullough of the San Diego Police Department.Of the vehicles screened, 18 drivers were evaluated and 11 were arrested on suspicion of DUI in or near the checkpoint, including one driver who was taken into custody after he failed to stop for the checkpoint and crashed his vehicle, McCullough said.Police also cited seven drivers for unspecified violations and impounded nine vehicles.Another checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, but the time and location were not immediately disclosed. 836

SAN DIEGO - A crash into a fire hydrant sent a geyser of water 50 feet in the air and flooded homes in Chollas Creek Sunday afternoon, witnesses said.The accident happened around 2 p.m. when witnesses said a U-Haul backed into a fire hydrant near the 5000 block of University Avenue. The hydrant broke, sending water shooting into the air.A home, several cars and some apartments nearby were flooded. The water was shut off about 45 minutes after it started, witnesses said.There is no damage estimate at this time. 523

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The red-hot San Francisco Giants keep playing — and winning — extra-inning games.Pablo Sandoval homered with two outs in the 11th and the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 Friday night for their 18th victory in 22 games.Sandoval's drive on a 1-2 pitch from Logan Allen (2-3) just cleared the wall in left field. It was his 13th. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, when he hit a leadoff double, and stayed in at third base."It doesn't get any bigger than that, what he did," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's another hard-fought game. These guys seem to like that, going overtime here."The Giants have won six extra-inning games in their last 10 contests and seven in their past 15 since the All-Star break."It tells me that we have a great bullpen," said starter Jeff Samardzija, who pitched six strong innings.
