LONG BEACH (CNS) - For thousands of years, millions of tiny white abalone snails lived along the California coast.Now facing extinction, the white abalone will be getting a major boost toward survival this month, thanks to a breeding program spearheaded by marine organizations across the state, including the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.In mid-November, researchers from the aquarium, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, the Bay Foundation, Paua Marine Research Group and state Department of Fish and Wildlife will be releasing white abalone into the wild at a series of undisclosed locations across Southern California.RELATED: Dog swept out to sea rescued, owner asks for more signage"This is a historic moment, as a species once on the brink of extinction may finally have a chance to rebound," said Sandy Trautwein, vice president of animal husbandry at Aquarium of the Pacific. "This is important not just for white abalone, but for the entire marine ecosystem off Southern California."Researchers are withholding the locations of the planned releases, hoping to give the white abalone the best chance at successfully settling into their new homes. The white abalone were actually placed underwater at their release locations last month, but they remain inside holding boxes."Natural recovery is not occurring fast enough or at all for this species to rebound on its own," said Melissa Neuman of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services' Abalone Recovery Program. "Fishing and other human activities brought white abalone to the brink of extinction, and now it is our responsibility to recover the first federally protected marine invertebrate."RELATED: Video: Rare blue whale with calf spotted off San Diego coastThousands of the white abalone have been bred through the program. Aquarium of the Pacific officials noted that when they joined the program in 2008, only 75 white abalones existed in managed care.The once-teeming population of white abalone was decimated over the decades by overfishing and low reproduction rate, according to the NOAA. Recent surveys indicated that the population dropped by about 99% in Southern California since 1970s.The white abalone was officially listed as a federally endangered species in 2001 -- the first marine invertebrate ever to make the list.NOAA officials said that without intervention, the remaining population would likely continue to decrease by 10% a year. 2493

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Newly published research indicates there's an almost one-in-four chance the mountain lions living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana mountains could become extinct in those areas within 50 years as a result of urban encroachment, inbreeding, vehicle strikes, rat poison and wildfire, it was reported today.In the face of such a dire prognosis, what biologists call an extinction vortex, conservationists are considering a desperate and controversial remedy: capturing pumas in one part of the Santa Anas and trucking them across the 15 Freeway so that they can breed with isolated mates on the other side of traffic."Wildlife managers never want to be a shuttle service for wild animals,'' said Justin Dellinger, senior environmental scientist with the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Los Angeles Times reported. But translocation has potential merit in the short term; after all it helped bring the critically endangered Florida panther back from the brink.Mountain lions are not endangered in California, but groups living in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana ranges now find themselves in genetic peril. Separated by freeways and lethal traffic, they are unable to range freely and are growing increasingly inbred, researchers say.In the Santa Monica Mountains, the 101 Freeway exists as a near impenetrable barrier to gene flow for a group of 10 mountain lions; in the Santa Ana Mountains, the 15 Freeway limits the movement of a family of 20 cougars.Sometimes, the animals manage to cross freeways without getting hit. At least seven cougars have crossed the 15 Freeway near Temecula in the last 15 years, and one sired 11 kittens. The fact that only one managed to reproduce, however, shows how difficult it is to diversify the gene pool in the lions still prowling the range.A population viability study published in the journal Ecological Applications predicts extinction probabilities of 16 to 28 percent over the next 50 years for these lions, which have the lowest genetic diversity documented for the specie aside from the critically endangered Florida panther.Study authors note also that wildfire and disease could result in "catastrophic mortality'' and further hasten the animals' disappearance.However, extinction probabilities were significantly reduced when computer models simulated the influence of two immigrant lions per year in areas blocked by development and freeways, according to a team of researchers that included Winston Vickers, an associate veterinarian at the UC Davis Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center, and Seth Riley, an ecologist with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, The Times reported. 2731

I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”DeGeneres said she knows she’s in a position of privilege and power and realizes that it comes with responsibility.“I take responsibility for what happens at my show,” she said. “This is the ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ I am Ellen DeGeneres, my name is there, my name is there, my name is on underwear.”DeGeneres said the people at the show have had a lot of conversations over the past few weeks about the workplace and what they want for the future.“We have made the necessary changes, and today, we are starting a new chapter,” said DeGeneres without saying what the changes would be.This was the first time DeGeneres addressed her viewers publicly since BuzzFeed and other news outlets reported about the dozens of current and former employees who said executive producers engaged in sexual misconduct and harassment at the show. LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- For gig workers who don’t have a typical 9 to 5 job, finding work is a hustle under normal circumstances.With the pandemic shutting down thousands of these specialty jobs across the country for months, many of these workers say it’s been a struggle to even put food on the table.Hollywood makeup artist Robert Maverick is used to creating nightmarish characters. He’s worked on all kinds of sets from live stage productions to blockbuster movies and television shows.Yet, surviving the shutdown, specifically the closure of the entertainment industry, has become a horror all too real.“It’s been the most depressing and stressful time of my life,” said Maverick.Maverick, like many other professionals behind the scenes and independent contractors around the country, works job to job whenever work is available.“We’re mostly middle class, and we don’t walk the red carpet, but we make the people who do look good,” Maverick said.“Many people think we live in a very glamorous world and that we’re very rich and entitled, but the truth is, many of us work on hourly wages and go from project to project,” said Felicia Linsky, a makeup artist who has worked in Hollywood for years. “You’re only as good as the project you get to show up and do,” she said.Career makeup artist Iris Abril, who has worked on shows like "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," said she and her husband are both gig workers. “With the pandemic, it put both of us out of work at the same time,” she said. “It’s really scary and we’re in denial,” said Abril of the fact that all productions across the entertainment industry ground to a halt for months.Now, production may resume, but the question is: how? Many fear they’ll be unemployed for months to come.Linsky started several new online business ventures while out of work in her field. She said it was not only a way to create income but a way to pass the time.“I created a virtual hair coloring and hair cutting service that ended up going across the country,” said Linsky. “I’ve always believed in online businesses, and that’s been my way of segwaying and staying positive and productive,” she said of making sure she did everything she could to bring in income during the shutdown.“We’ve all tried to stay active, but it’s been tremendously upsetting," said Stephen Lighthill, President of the Board of Governors for the American Society of Cinematographers. "It’s the danger of going outside, the danger of the pandemic, and of course what’s happened to our economy. And going forward we’re all very fearful that when we go back to work the world will be a very different place.”Lighthill said across the industry, gig workers on large and small productions will be impacted for years to come, if not permanently. “It’s going to have to change the way we work in the production of films, it's going to change the way people see films, it’s going to change the size of our audiences and where those audiences are going now. As much as we talk about going back to work, but there’s a tremendous amount of fear that we won’t have the right tools in place.”For Maverick, when the work he loved dried up, he filed for unemployment, but because of a banking clerical error, “I received one COVID payment with the regular benefits plus the extra payment of 0,” he said. “That was 10 weeks ago.”He is now still waiting for all the benefits he is owed to arrive."COVID-19 is not as big of a fear to me as sliding into poverty this far in my career where I’m just years away from retirement,” he said.Maverick said the stress and anxiety piled up with his bills. “It’s sad you have to be at this point, 30 years into your career, worried about just having food in the pantry,” he said. “I was eating every third day. I would take vegetables, because they’re cheap, and juice them and put them in the refrigerator and drink them over the course of three days.”In the midst of his physical struggle, Maverick was hit with heartbreak. His brother, an Army veteran, passed away.“I’m a fixer, I’ve always been a fixer. That’s why I do my job as a makeup artist,” he said. “But I can’t fix this. I can’t fix dead.”And he can’t turn Hollywood on overnight for the thousands of people waiting in the wings as filmmakers and lawmakers rescript the choreography on set so the show can safely go on.“Hollywood is not that far away from your front door. You just turn on your TV. We’re always there to entertain you, and we hope that you’re there for us as we struggle through this,” said Maverick. 4529
