SAN DIEGO (AP) — A former U.S. Navy sailor who was attached to a U.S. Navy SEAL platoon says the 2019 deployment to Iraq was marred by drinking and sexual misconduct. Colleen Grace is the first to give an in-depth view of what led up to an entire SEAL platoon being withdrawn from Iraq following a Fourth of July barbecue and the alleged sexual assault of a sailor. Grace detailed what she witnessed that night and described other misconduct. Special Warfare Operator First Class Adel A. Enayat was charged with sexual assault. He denies any wrongdoing. The AP initially withheld his name because he filed a counter complaint saying the sailor raped him. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service said Friday it has closed that investigation because he did not cooperate. 778

SAN DIEGO — A College Area nonprofit that is seeing record requests for its services may not survive the pandemic itself.Sharia's Closet provides free clothes to people who have an emergency need. Founder Shamine Linton said with the Coronavirus pandemic, the organization has already served more than 2,500 families in 2020, a record pace. "Due to unemployment, homelessness and domestic violence, our needs have grown," Linton said. Sharia's Closet, named for Linton's daughter, operates out of a former dental office near San Diego State University. It's divided into five rooms that are filled with clothes for children, teens, men and women - casual to professional. Linton said the organization gets connected to families through 54 social service organizations. While the demand is at an all-time high, the prospects of surviving past 2020 are not. "I don't think I'll have the money to continue for the next year," Linton said. Linton said the organization survives off community donations, but those have lagged in this economy. She has reduced hours for her staff of two, and the closet is now only open three days a week. The formerly manageable ,500 in monthly operating costs is now becoming daunting. "I'm hoping for financial donations to help keep our doors open, to help keep the service for the community that needs it the most," Linton said.Linton said Sharia's Closet has been able to receive public assistance for personal protective equipment, but not operations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A community vigil to honor last week's El Paso shooting victims is set for 7 p.m. Sunday in Balboa Park, organizers said Saturday."We wanted to express our grief and be there for the community," Jessica Yanez Perez, a vigil organizer, said. "As a border city with strong Latino heritage, we stand with El Paso and grieve with them."The two-hour event will be held outside the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and will feature community speakers, a prayer vigil and biographies of the 22 victims of Aug. 3's mass shooting, Perez said."This event is an opportunity to bring the community together as we mourn, remember and hopefully, in time, heal," Perez said. "It's our shared responsibility to speak out against white supremacy and intolerance, and to build an America where all of us are safe."A traditional mariachi band will perform at the vigil, she said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- California will have the highest gas tax in the nation after an upcoming increase beginning July 1, according to figures by the Tax Foundation. Beginning July 1, California’s gas tax will increase by nearly six cents. Currently, the tax is 55.2 cents per gallon. When the additional tax kicks in, that figure will jump to more than 60 cents in taxes per gallon. Currently, the highest gas tax in the nation is in Pennsylvania at 58.7 cents.
