ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The North County finally has its own comedy club. The Grand Comedy Club opened on Grand Avenue in Escondido late in 2019 and reports growing crowds over its first 10 weeks. "I think people need a good laugh, nowadays. It's really great to see people leaving here happy and telling their friends, and their friends refer their friends. It's great to bring something back to my hometown that the locals really dig and have fun at," said owner Adam Wasserman.Wasserman is a property manager who has performed as a part-time stand up comedian for 11 years. He began thinking of starting his own club, and wanted it to be in Escondido. "You had to go downtown or La Jolla to go to shows. It's a long way to go and and parking and everything. I always thought 'Why was there never a club here in North County?'" Wasserman said.The headliners are typically brought in from Los Angeles, while many of the supporting acts are comedians from San Diego. Wasserman says they're seeing ticket sales from across North County. "We have several nice restaurants, but after you have dinner, that's it. There's nowhere to go," said Escondido resident Jacqueline Lawhorn. "At least now you can come here and enjoy a night of comedy."The opening of the Grand Comedy Club is just the latest step in Escondido's attempt to revitalize its downtown area and make it into more of destination spot. The hope is to give locals an option to spend their money closer to home, and to draw people from neighboring cities into Escondido businesses."You'd have to go to La Jolla or Orange County or whatever," said attendee Gary Arant, who has already gone to several shows at the club. "This is so amazing we have something so local and it's really good." 1758

Ronan is legally blind. He's also pumped to see Solo, clearly and without constant explanations.“It's been blurry and I would have to have my brother or my dad tell me what's going on,” said Christian.It's hard to miss his Star-Wars-like contraption on his face. It's called eSight. There are screens that show a picture that Ronan can adjust from a controller in his pocket.    While seeing a movie is huge for the 12 year old, it’s the simple things that made the biggest impression on him. “I could finally see my family,” said Christian.Ronan watched Solo at Dipson Flix in Lancaster. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of hitting and killing an Escondido bicyclist appeared in court Wednesday on unrelated charges. Jamison Connor, 41, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. The charges were unrelated to the deadly hit-and-run and were instead a result of parole violations in which Connor was found with a bag of methamphetamine and a loaded gun during a traffic stop. Also in the truck at the time of the stop was Connor's young son, prosecutors say. The District Attorney's office went into detail outside the courtroom about the arrest. "During their investigation, police noted several signs and symptoms the defendant was under the effect of controlled substances and alcohol," said Assistant DA Chris Campbell. RELATED: Grieving family learns of hit-and-run arrest on Thanksgiving holidayEscondido Police pulled Connor over Thanksgiving morning, driving with his four-year-old son. "When they took the defendant out, law enforcement searched the truck. They found a bag of meth in passenger side door and loaded 25 caliber firearm in glove compartment."After his arrest, police announced Connor as the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed 36-year-old Kevin Lentz. Lentz was cycling with a group along La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway when he was hit head-on November 23. “The driver of the car was on the wrong side of the road, traveling at high speed on a blind curve when he hit Kevin head-on, killing him instantly,” wrote Devin Rickey on a GoFundMe page set up for Lentz’ family.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashOfficers later found a dark Toyota sedan abandoned about a half-mile away from the crash on the 600 block of Aster Street. Police say the vehicle had significant damage to the windshield and roof. (KGTV) - The 'Golden State Killer' arrest is shining the spotlight on a controversial DNA search known as Familial DNA.    In the summer of 2013, local communities were gripped by fear amid a string of unspeakable crimes.An unknown culprit dubbed 'The Creeper' entered five homes in Escondido and one in San Marcos, cutting screens, cutting the clothes of little girls and molesting them while they slept.The suspect left DNA at several scenes, but a search turned up no matches.  Ultimately the case went cold until detectives applied to the State Department of Justice - for a DNA familial search.In 2015, the mystery DNA profile was linked to somebody already in the system, a close relative of the suspect."They were able to determine through a familial search who the suspect likely was," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders.That suspect was Gilbert Chavarria, who recently pleaded guilty to a host of charges.  He was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison."Police did an excellent job gathering the evidence, but the leads were exhausted. Without the familial searches, we'd still be on our hands waiting," said Saunders.It marked the first use of the search in a local case.  Amid concerns from privacy advocates, Governor Brown in 2008 enacted a policy that familial DNA would be used only as a last resort.It's been rarely used but did provide the break in several serial killer cases, including the 'Grim Sleeper' case and now, the 'Golden State Killer' case.  In the latter, the mystery DNA was linked to a familial profile from an ancestry website.Some law enforcement experts tell 10News the recent cases could lead to a lot more requests for the DNA search.  Familial DNA also provided the break in the infamous 'BTK' serial killer case in Kansas. 1858

Election officials in Georgia are expected to release a report that details the results of a hand recount of the 2020 presidential election on Thursday, a report that's expected to confirm President-elect Joe Biden narrowly defeated President Donald Trump in the state.The recount — which was prompted by a state law and is not connected to any suspected fraud — was ordered last week by Georgia Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger.Counties were required to report the results of their hand recount by 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. The Associated Press reports that Gabriel Sterling, the voting system implementation manager in the state, said he expects a report on the recount to be released by mid-day Thursday.Georgia is the final state that The Associated Press has not yet called for either candidate.Prior to the recount, Biden held a lead of about 14,000 votes statewide. While a handful of counties have reported that the hand recount found a few Trump votes that had not been counted, the new tally is only expected to shift the vote count by a few hundred votes.On Wednesday, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond directly disputed an allegation of a "vote error" levied by State Republican party chairman David Shafer. While Shafer alleged that the error affected the count by more than 9,000 votes, Thurmond called the claim "unsubstantiated." Even in the unlikely event that Georgia would swing to Trump, Biden would still have the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim the presidency. 1511
