A reputed New York crime boss was shot and killed outside a home Wednesday night.Francesco Cali, 53, was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, the NYPD said.A law enforcement official confirmed to CNN that the victim was a high-ranking member of the Gambino crime family and is believed to be the acting boss.Police responded to a 911 call Wednesday night of an assault in front of the home in the New York borough of Staten Island.EMS responded to the scene and transported Cali to Staten Island University North where he was pronounced dead.Police say there are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.Cali had been considered a unifying figure in the years after John Gotti, "Dapper Don," was convicted and sent to prison by cooperating mob witnesses, CNN affiliate WPIX reported.Unlike the well-dressed Gotti of the late 80s and early 90s, Cali kept a low profile.He was the first New York crime family boss shot in 34 years, according to the station. Actor Cuba Gooding Jr.'s sex abuse trial is set to begin Tuesday with jury selection in New York City.Gooding is charged with forcible touching, a misdemeanor, and sex abuse in the third degree related to an alleged groping incident in June.A 29-year-old woman filed a police report claiming Gooding grabbed her breast at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge in Manhattan.Gooding has denied the claim.The actor voluntarily surrendered to New York police for questioning in June and was released on his own recognizance.The woman in the alleged incident told police she was with friends when she was confronted by a male patron whom she described as Gooding, a law enforcement source told CNN."The male allegedly groped her breasts," the source said. When her family saw it they said it is time for adults to be held accountable. The principal says he was called by a teacher to help with disruptive students. Because she is a minor we are withholding her identity, but the student recording admits she interrupted class by talking with a friend. She says the principal then overreacted. He can be held yelling at the students to shut up and to go to another school if they don’t like it. He calls one student a big mouth. “I was scared. One girl was crying, because he has two faces, one for the parents and for us,” said the student. “I cannot imagine watching a teacher treat my children this way,” said Kaytlyn Dell, who is the student’s older sister. She is speaking for her parents because they do not speak English. “Kids are screaming. Teachers are screaming. There is no structure,” said Dell. “Anything short of treating children with dignity and respect, parents, colleagues, administrators, is unacceptable. So anytime that is compromised we take that very seriously and address the matter swiftly,” said Michael Conran, Superintendent of Global Education Excellence Schools, which runs several charter schools. Although many consider vaping a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes, researchers from the Ohio State University say it is not a good to make such claims at this time. Part of the reason is that research led by OSU Professor of Nursing and Medicine Loren Wold claims that there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes and their aerosol constituents, nicotine, carbonyl compounds, particulate matter, metals and flavorings can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. The study was published last week in journal Cardiovascular Research.The authors of the study say, however, that there is not sufficient data to make conclusions on the exact effect e-cigarettes have on the heart."Great caution and hesitation should remain concerning e-cigarette use until its health risk profile is better established," the study reads. "Therefore, additional high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to conclusively establish the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes."“Many people think these products are safe, but there is more and more reason to worry about their effects on heart health,” Wold said.The research comes as federal and state officials have been looking into why there has been an increase to the number of vapers who have suffered from lung disease due to vaping. As of last week, there have been 39 confirmed deaths and more than 2,000 cases of lung disease likely caused from vaping, the CDC said. Part of the problem, Wold said, is that the long-term effects of vaping is unknown. In 2011, there were 7 million people who used e-cigarettes. That number has since increased to 41 million. “We know these problems are seen in these studies looking at the short-term effects of vaping, but that research is inconsistent and the impact of chronic e-cigarette use is an outright mystery.
