SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The downtown building at 101 Ash Street has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill.City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómezto voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.The mayor's options included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursue a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.The coronavirus pandemic has cleared out office buildings across downtown San Diego. But emptiness is business as usual for the old Sempra building at 101 Ash.In 2016, the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million. The idea was to move upwards of 1,100 city employees into the facility.But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors.In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.So how did the city get into this mess? A new investigation shows it really never did its homework for such a big purchase from the start.The law firm Hugo Parker found that, "at no time, however, did the city formally inspect 101 Ash before closing escrow."In January, councilmember Barbara Bry showed ABC 10News a document that the city accepted the property as is."That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.An additional new report from Kitchell says the building needs 5 million of repairs, which is well more than what the city paid for it. 1947

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of opening fire into a Hillcrest business has been found incompetent to stand trial. Stefano Markell Parker, 29, was facing attempted murder charges in San Diego in connection with the shooting at Golden Dragon Asian Bistro in February of 2019. Witnesses in the area that night described a man they say stood outside the restaurant armed with a rifle and opened fire. No one was shot. Witnesses say the gunman then changed clothes, providing a description. Police arrested Parker in the area later in the night. A spokesperson at the Jefferson County Jail in Alabama previously confirmed to 10News that Parker was in custody in recent years. In 2016, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana and drug trafficking charges. In 2017, he faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Court records also show that Parker faced capital murder charges when he was a teenager in connection with a shooting from a vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists.
