Ray Robinson’s great-grandparents started Robinson Farm more than a century ago. The centerpiece for this farm in Hardswick, Massachusetts, is an iconic red barn that sits in the center of the property. It’s surrounded by woods and open fields where about two dozen cows spend their days grazing on grass.For the last 10 years, the Robinsons made most of their money, selling cheese to high-end restaurants in the Boston area. But once COVID-19 hit, that stream of revenue disappeared overnight.“Our distributor has not ordered a wheel of cheese since March, and it’s now September,” Pam Robinson explained.Like farmers across the country who sell their products directly to restaurants, the Robinsons found themselves having to suddenly pivot their entire business model. Almost as soon as restaurants closed in March, Pam Robinson noticed an incredible increase in the number of individual online orders they were receiving.Demand for delivery of the gourmet cheese this farm produces has skyrocketed in recent months. Online sales have doubled as the Robinsons have seen more Americans looking to get their food directly from local farms because of COVID-19. Many customers are also still unable to leave their homes because of health concerns.“People aren’t going out. They want things delivered to their door,” Pam Robinson added.Finding farms that deliver like the Robinsons though can sometimes be difficult, which is why a new website has gained popularity during the pandemic.David Pham and Jason Curescu are two guys in their 30s who live in New York City and started the website Farmsthataredelivering.com. They've spent months creating a free online database where people can search for farms in their area that deliver.“By going back to our food source, that’s how we can really know what’s in our food,” Pham said.The idea has taken off. Not just with Americans ordering food, but with the farmers themselves.“A lot of the farmers we talk to this is the part of the job they don’t like,” he added.It's the kind of boost farms could use now more than ever. In a recent survey, 73 percent of farmers said COVID-19 affected their operations in some way. Thirty-four percent of dairy farmers said the pandemic is forcing them to speed up plans to leave farming altogether, which includes the Robinsons, who have decided it's time to sell the family farm.“It’s hard to let it go, but it’s time,” said Pam Robinson, while looking at the land she’s lived on most of her life.But for now, they still have plenty of cheese that's ready to be packaged and shipped. SIOUX FALLS, SD — New DNA technology has led to the arrest on Friday of a South Dakota woman who is being charged with murder for allegedly leaving her newborn in a ditch 38 years ago, according to police.On Feb. 28, 1981, a full-term baby boy was found in a blanket in the cold in Sioux Falls, police said. The baby had been born alive, but died from exposure to the elements, a coroner said, according to Sioux Falls police.No suspects or family members were identified, police said. A cemetery interred the baby and give him the name of Andrew John Doe, police said.After nearly four decades on Friday morning, the baby's mother, 57-year-old Theresa Bentaas, was arrested and accused of leaving the baby alive in the ditch, Sioux Falls police said at a news conference. She was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, police said.The baby's father was also interviewed, but not arrested because "it was determined that at that time they were young teenagers and he did not know," Sioux Falls police Detective Michael Webb said.The cold case first heated up 10 years ago as DNA technology advanced and investigators looked into obtaining DNA from the unidentified baby, Webb said.In 2009 the baby's body was exhumed and his DNA was put into databases, but over the years there were no matches, Webb said.Then in April 2018, Webb said the arrest of the suspected "Golden State Killer" piqued his interest.The alleged "Golden State Killer," a serial killer and rapist who terrorized California in the 1970s and 1980s, became the first person to be publicly arrested through genetic genealogy. Genetic genealogy takes an unknown suspect's DNA from a crime scene and identifies the suspect through his or her family members, who voluntarily submit their DNA to genealogy databases.Since April 2018, genetic genealogy has helped identify more than three dozen suspects, according to CeCe Moore, chief genetic genealogist for Parabon NanoLabs, which has worked on the majority of the cases, including Andrew John Doe.Parabon helped Sioux Falls investigators build a family tree based on the baby's DNA, and they combed through old birth and marriage announcements to help put the pieces together, Webb said.A possible match was found in February 2019. The suspect, Bentaas, still lived in Sioux Falls and police executed a search warrant to get her DNA, police said. DNA tests then confirmed Bentaas was the baby's mother, police said.The baby's father was also still living in Sioux Falls, Webb said."We did interview them last Wednesday on the anniversary that we believe the baby was put in the ditch, on Feb. 27," Webb said. ST JOSEPH, Mo. — A couple rushed to save a dog’s life after she was shot and left for dead in the woods.Jacob Carter, his fiance Robin Musser, and a few other family members were out hunting for mushrooms Thursday in the Bluffwoods Conservation Area just south of St. Joseph, Missouri.The group was just finishing up when they heard gunshots."We heard two gunshots, and we were coming on out anyway and stuff, getting ready to pack up and leave,” said Carter.Musser said the gunfire didn’t worry them since it’s common during turkey hunting season. "We'd seen a turkey earlier, thought maybe someone was shooting at the turkey,” she said.As they were driving out of the woods, something caught Musser’s eye."We were coming down the road and I spotted the dog and thought it was a puppy,” said Musser.Carter pulled over to go see if the dog was okay.As he walked closer he noticed it was an adult dog that wasn’t moving, and then he saw blood."That's when I noticed that she was shot, so I took my shirt off and started applying pressure,” said Carter.The white female pitbull had been shot twice, once in the back of the head and once through her ear. 1184
