SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Republican California State Senator Brian Jones is behind a new bill that, if passed, would change the way military retirement pay is taxed. The bill, titled SB 1071, would exempt military retirement pay from the state’s income tax. According to Jones, California is one of only seven states that fully taxes military retirement pay. Other states include Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 64-year-old taco truck owner was robbed at gunpoint Friday evening in the Linda Vista neighborhood.The victim was cleaning his truck at 6800 Linda Vista Rd. about 8:30 p.m. when the suspect walked up and demanded money, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.As the victim turned around, he saw the suspect pointing a gun at him and the suspect again demanded money, Heims said.The victim gave up an unknown amount of cash and the suspect ran off, last seen southbound in the 6800 block of Linda Vista Road, Heims said.The suspect was described as a 20-year-old Hispanic man, 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build, wearing blue jeans and a gray hoodie with a gray bandana around his face, Heims said.Anyone with information was asked to call San Diego Police Robbery Division detectives at 619-531-2299 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 889

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A body was found today alongside Interstate 5 in Sherman Heights.A 911 caller reported the discovery next to the northbound lanes of the freeway near Island Avenue about 11:45 a.m. according to the San Diego Police Department. The person's gender and approximate age were not immediately released.After confirming the death, SDPD officers turned the case over to the California Highway Patrol, since the spot where the body was found is within the state agency's jurisdiction.There were no immediate indications of criminal involvement in connection with the fatality. 594

SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico.At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. SAN DEIGO (KGTV)-- Millions of students from around the world skipped class and took to the streets to call attention to climate change. San Diego was one of more than 3,600 locations that held the global Climate Change Walkout. Hundreds of teenagers marched from San Diego High School in Downtown to the San Diego Civic Center, hoping to make an impact, three days before the United Nations Climate Change Summit. It's a fight against time. Time, they say, the planet does not have. "Climate change is the existential threat of our generation," Elea Castiglione said. The sophomore at San Deigo High School organized the walkout with her friends. She and hundreds of students hoped their actions would inspire world leaders to take aggressive steps to combat climate change. Point Loma High School senior, Kisi Apaak performed her spoken-word piece, "Madness," at the San Diego Civic Center rally. Being 17, she said she does not have an income, nor does she have the right to vote. She said spoken-word is her way to show Mother Nature that she cares."This is all I know how to do, is write and talk and get out and take action," Apaak said. Many said they were inspired by Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist, who has now become the face of the movement. Activists here said San Diegans should be more involved, considering our geography."I think that San Diego as a city needs to go carbon neutral, and we also need to be leaders as a coastal city in our protest for nationwide and global change," Castiglione said.
