TRINITY, Fla. — Family and friends of a man who recently suffered a fractured skull are speaking out about delays in care from a Florida hospital they believe made his condition worse.On what was supposed to be a fun night playing softball, Donnie Smith's life changed forever.Smith had just thrown a pitch, when a line drive hit him in the head.“Donnie went immediately to the ground,” said teammate Bryan Williams. “Blood was coming out of his nose. You could already see the swelling.”At that point, they knew it was bad.  Another teammate took him to the nearest emergency room, which was at Medical Center of Trinity, about two miles south of the ballpark.  Donnie got to Trinity at 7:46 p.m. local time“You figure a hospital is a hospital. It's there to take care of emergencies,” said teammate Jimmy Sigmone.But not all emergency rooms can handle all emergencies, as Smith's sister Patti Dermer was about to learn.By the time she arrived, a CT scan showed his injury was potentially life-threatening.By 8:20 p.m., they knew he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.But doctors at Trinity couldn't perform emergency surgery to relieve the pressure.At 9:16 p.m., a doctor signed a transfer order, and a surgical team was placed on stand-by 13 miles away at the Bayonet Point Trauma Center.“There were ambulances sitting outside the door, and they wouldn't put him in it,” said Deremer.As seconds and minutes ticked by, Smith's condition worsened.“He's going gray, sweating profusely, chills everywhere,” Deremer said.She said she was alone with him in an ER Bay for most of the time they were waiting.He was given an ice pack to hold on his head.  By 10 o'clock, Donnie’s heart rate dropped to under 40 beats a minute.“He wound up throwing up blood all over the room. Blood started gushing out of his nose,” Dermer said.Records indicate the ER staff had called for a helicopter, but it couldn't fly due to weather conditions. “It was the longest night of my life,” Deremer said. “Literally, I was out there screaming at people.”By 10:20 p.m., Donnie’s blood pressure spiked and his pulse was dropping.The ER team rushed him to another room and put him to sleep.  Records show that finally at 10:21 p.m., the first call from Trinity was made to Pasco County EMS for an ambulance.It was two-and-a-half hours after Donnie first arrived at Trinity and more than an hour after a doctor signed the transfer order.Donnie finally got to Bayonet Point at 11:25 p.m., four hours after the softball fractured his skull.Friends wish they'd called 911 from the ball field, so paramedics would have taken him where he needed to go the first time.“You can point a million fingers. Tropical Storm Michael formed near the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, and it's on track to wallop the United States."The current forecast indicates the storm entering the Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning, strengthening to a hurricane by early Wednesday and likely targeting the Florida panhandle by late Wednesday," CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.As of 4 p.m. Sunday, Tropical Storm Michael was centered about 130 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.But it's so big, people 200 miles away from the center are getting hit with tropical-storm-force winds (which have increased to at least 50 mph)."Strengthening is forecast during the next several days," the hurricane center said.Track the stormBefore Michael hits the United States, it's expected to dump 3 to 7 inches of rain on western Cuba."Isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible in western Cuba," the hurricane center said. "This rainfall could lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in areas of mountainous terrain."Michael's path to the Gulf is also affecting politics in Florida.Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum was scheduled to campaign in South Florida on Monday and Tuesday, but said he is suspending his campaign activity to address preparations for the storm, his campaign said. U.S. energy consumption plummeted to its lowest level in more than 30 years this spring as the nation’s economy largely shut down because of the coronavirus, federal officials reported Wednesday.The drop was driven by less demand for coal that is burned for electricity and oil that’s refined into gasoline and jet fuel, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.The declines were in line with lower energy usage around the globe as the pandemic seized up economies.Those trends are turning around as commercial activity resumes but the impact has already been profound — including energy companies filing for bankruptcy protection and a forecasted dip in annual U.S. and global greenhouse gas emissions.Overall U.S. energy consumption dropped 14 % during April compared to a year earlier, the energy administration said. That’s the lowest monthly level since 1989 and the largest decrease ever recorded in data that’s been collected since 1973.The largest drop previously seen was in December 2001, after the Sept. 11 attacks shocked the economy and a mild winter depressed electricity demand.Natural gas bucked the trend with a 15 percent increase in use during the April lockdown. More people at home meant more demand for natural gas as a heating fuel, while relatively few homes are heated with coal or oil, said Brett Marohl, who helped produce the energy administration findings.Petroleum consumption fell to 14.7 million barrels a day in April, down almost a third compared to the same period in 2019. Demand already has rebounded some after stay-at-home orders expired and large sectors of the economy started moving again.Led by people resuming some of their old driving habits, particularly in cities, petroleum consumption in June was back up to 17.6 million barrels a day, according to the American Petroleum Institute. U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and James Lankford are backtracking on a proposed amendment that would have replaced Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday.On July 1, Johnson and Lankford filed an amendment to a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday. The amendment filed by Johnson and Lankford proposed to replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a federal holiday, in order to not add an additional federal holiday that would impact federal services and local businesses.On July 3, Johnson and Lankford said they were withdrawing the proposed amendment and introducing a modified substitute amendment that would reduce the number of paid leave days for federal employees.“Although the substitute amendment I offered to the Juneteenth holiday bill had the desired effect of slowing down the passage of a new paid day off for federal workers, many were not happy with the proposal to swap a holiday celebrating emancipation with Columbus Day,” said Johnson in a news release Friday. “Let me reiterate: I suggested Columbus Day for the swap because few Americans in the private sector get it as a paid holiday, and as a result, it is lightly celebrated, and would not be disruptive to most Americans’ schedules. I was in no way deprecating Christopher Columbus’ achievements or expressing any value judgment regarding his place in history. As I stated in an interview with the Milwaukee Press Club last Friday, I do not support efforts to erase America’s rich history, not the good, the bad or the ugly."Federal employees are given 10 paid holidays a year. Johnson said the cost of an additional 11th paid holiday would cost taxpayers 0 million.“Instead of eliminating a current holiday to make room for Juneteenth Day, I will be proposing to reduce the number of paid leave days federal employees receive, to offset the cost of the new holiday celebrating emancipation.
