Rolling Hills Elementary School, on Pe?asquitos Drive west of Interstate 15, was placed on lockdown around 9 a.m. as police searched for the suspect along Avenida Montuosa, a street off Del Diablo Way just south of the school, according to San Diego police. Around 10 a.m., police called off the search and the lockdown was lifted, SDPD public-affairs officer Billy Hernandez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Other charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense, attempted oral copulation, false imprisonment with force and auto theft, were dismissed at sentencing. 1165

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Powell's death has been ruled a homicide, said Seiver, who declined to specify how the victim is believed to have died."The preliminary cause-of-death (finding) is being withheld for investigative reasons," Seiver said.Powell's work supervisor asked police to check on him after he missed several meetings, according to the sheriff's department. 878
