President Donald Trump on Wednesday strongly pushed back against claims he has made racist remarks, as alleged by his former lawyer Michael Cohen."That's false," Trump said as a reporter began his question.Asked whether he called rapper Lil' Jon an "Uncle Tom," Trump said, "I don't know who Little Jon is."He was reminded Lil' Jon was on his NBC show, "The Apprentice.""I would never do that and I don't use racist remarks," Trump told reporters in the East Room, adding that if he did, "You would've known about it."Trump said he "never" worries about any record of racist remarks because "I have never used racist remarks." 634

President Donald Trump on Wednesday fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions."At your request I am submitting my resignation," Sessions wrote in a letter to White House chief of staff John Kelly.Matthew Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general, the President said.Whitaker is expected to take charge of the the Russia investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein."We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well ...We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date," Trump tweeted. The move is an abrupt end to what had been a tumultuous tenure for Sessions, originally one of Trump's earliest and most loyal surrogates as an Alabama Republican senator. He was a key figure in implementing Trump's vision for America and significantly rolled back Obama-era policies on immigration, police reform and civil rights.Sessions was an enforcer of much of the Trump administration's hardline approach on immigration and regularly praised the President's tough words on crime. But even as he continued to carry out the Trump agenda, his relationship with the President remained strained and fraught for months due to the ongoing Mueller investigation.Sessions received the request to resign from Kelly, not the President, on Wednesday morning, an administration official said. It is not clear whether Mueller was told ahead of time.  1656

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, aiming to honor the victims of Wednesday's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, visited Broward Health North Hospital on Friday, the hospital where many of the victims were treated.Trump told reporters at the hospital that he spoke to victims of the shooting, adding that it is "very sad something like that could happen."The President, during the brief exchange, also heralded the efforts of hospital staff and first responders to save lives. Our entire Nation, w/one heavy heart, continues to pray for the victims & their families in Parkland, FL. To teachers, law enforcement, first responders & medical professionals who responded so bravely in the face of danger: We THANK YOU for your courage! https://t.co/3yJsrebZMG pic.twitter.com/ti791dENTy— Donald J. President Donald Trump is expected to name veteran Washington, DC, lawyer Pat Cipollone as the next White House counsel, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.The pick could be announced as soon as the coming week, the sources said. The White House is waiting for his clearance information to be completed before announcing the choice, one of the sources said.Cipollone met with White House officials earlier this week to discuss the counsel's job, a different source familiar with the situation told CNN.But sources caution nothing is final until an announcement is made.Asked Saturday if Cipollone is going to be the next White House Counsel, Trump told reporters, "I haven't named the new White House counsel. But over a short period of time, I will." 769

President Donald Trump bemoaned a decision not to investigate Hillary Clinton after the 2016 presidential election, decrying a "rigged system" that still doesn't have the "right people" in place to fix it, during a freewheeling speech to Republican donors in Florida on Saturday. In the closed-door remarks, a recording of which was obtained by CNN, Trump also praised China's President Xi Jinping for recently consolidating power and extending his potential tenure, musing he wouldn't mind making such a maneuver himself."He's now president for life. President for life. And he's great," Trump said. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll give that a shot some day."The remarks, delivered inside the ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago estate during a lunch and fundraiser, were upbeat, lengthy, and peppered with jokes and laughter. But Trump's words reflected his deeply felt resentment that his actions during the 2016 campaign remain under scrutiny while those of his former rival, Hillary Clinton, do not."I'm telling you, it's a rigged system folks," Trump said. "I've been saying that for a long time. It's a rigged system. And we don't have the right people in there yet. We have a lot of great people, but certain things, we don't have the right people."Trump has repeatedly said that his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, should launch investigations into Clinton, and has continued to lambast Sessions on Twitter for not taking what he views as appropriate steps to probe Clinton's actions involving her private email server. The stewing anger with Sessions has soured Trump's mood over the past week, including on Wednesday evening, when he fumed inside the White House over his attorney general's decision to release a statement defending himself after Trump chastised his approach to an investigation into alleged surveillance abuses as "DISGRACEFUL" on Twitter. The episode was just one irritant in a long series of upsetting moments for Trump this week. Morale at the White House has dropped to new lows, and Trump himself has seethed at the negative headlines. On Saturday, among donors gathered in the grand ballroom named for himself at Mar-a-Lago, Trump pondered the happiness of his former rival, wondering aloud whether she was enjoying life after the campaign."Is Hillary a happy person? Do you think she's happy?" he said. "When she goes home at night, does she say, 'What a great life?' I don't think so. You never know. I hope she's happy."Elsewhere in his remarks, Trump went after former President George W. Bush for his decision to invade Iraq after faulty intelligence indicated the country had weapons of mass destruction."Here we are, like the dummies of the world, because we had bad politicians running our country for a long time," he said.Trump called the Iraq invasion "the single worst decision ever made" and said it amounted to "throwing a big fat brick into a hornet's nest.""That was Bush. Another real genius. That was Bush," Trump said sarcastically. "That turned out to be wonderful intelligence. Great intelligence agency there."Trump has previously cited the WMD failure to go after US intelligence agencies, bringing up the error as a reason to doubt the same agencies conclusions' that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
