WASHINGTON — Ivanka Trump has been deposed by attorneys alleging that President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration committee misused donor funds. A new court filing, first reported by CNN Wednesday, notes that Ivanka Trump, the president’s oldest daughter and a senior White House adviser, was interviewed Tuesday by attorneys from the Washington, D.C., attorney general’s office. The office has filed a lawsuit alleging waste of the nonprofit’s funds, accusing the committee of making more than million in improper payments to the president’s Washington, D.C., hotel for event space during the week of the inauguration in 2017.In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump confirmed that she had met with the D.C. attorney general in connection with the investigation. She said she shared an email with investigators in which she asked staff at the hotel to charge a "fair market rate" for hotel rooms."This 'inquiry' is another politically motivated demonstration of vindictiveness & waste of taxpayer dollars," Trump said. 1027

WASHINGTON (AP) — An American citizen kidnapped in the West African nation of Niger this past week has been rescued in a U.S. military operation in neighboring Nigeria. That's according to a U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Philipe Nathan Walton was taken from his farm in Massalata in southern Niger early Tuesday morning by armed kidnappers who demanded a ransom from the man's father. The U.S. official says there were no solid indications that Walton's kidnapping was terrorism-related and that it was instead "trending toward a kidnapping for ransom." Walton is now back in Niger, according to the official, who says no ransom was paid. 691
WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans are proposing changes to police procedures and accountability, according to a draft of a bill obtained by The Associated Press. The JUSTICE Act — Just and Unifying Solutions To Invigorate Communities Everywhere Act of 2020 — would establish an enhanced use-of-force database, restrictions on chokeholds and new training and commissions to study law enforcement and race.In addition to the use-of-force database, the JUSTICE Act would also begin tracking — but would not ban — the use of no-knock warrants. In March, a Louisville woman named Breonna Taylor was killed when police entered her home on such a warrant. The JUSTICE Act is the most ambitious GOP policing proposal in years. It's a direct response to the massive public protests over the death of George Floyd and other black Americans. The package is set to be introduced Wednesday. As the outlines emerged, Democrats said it didn't go far enough. The Justice in Policing Act, a bill introduced by Democrats in the House last week, would introduce more sweeping changes, including a ban on police chokeholds. The Democrats' bill would also amend federal law to make it easier to charge police officers with civil rights violations. The introduction of the GOP bill will be introduced a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing police practices. Trump's order calls on police departments to utilize social workers in some emergency calls. It also encouraged the formation of a nationwide database to track officers who may be fired from one department in an effort to prevent another department from hiring them. 1643
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says the Food and Drug Administration has issued an emergency use authorization for convalescent plasma to treat COVID-19 patients.WATCH PRESS CONFERENCE:Trump, announcing the decision Sunday at the White House, called convalescent plasma a “powerful therapy.” He says the FDA’s action will expand access to the treatment, which is already being used. The treatment involves transferring antibodies from recovered COVID-19 patients to patients suffering from the disease. On Sunday, Trump said the administration have provided million to fund the Mayo Clinic study that studied the efficiency in patients that have the virus."Through this study, over 100,000 Americans have already enrolled to receive this treatment, and it is proven to reduce mortality by 35%," Trump said. "It's a tremendous number. The FDA, M.I.T., Harvard, and Mount Sinai Hospital have also found convalescent plasma to be a very effective method of fighting this horrible disease. Based on the science and the data, the FDA has made the independent determination that the treatment is safe and very effective."Trump also announced the administration provided up to 0 million to the American Red Cross and America's blood centers to support the collection of up to 360,000 units of plasma.Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that patients with the virus who were treated within three days of being diagnoses benefited the most from the treatment."We saw about a 35% under survival in the patients who benefited most from the treatment, who were patients under 80 and not on artificial respiration," Azar said. The announcement follows days of suggestions by White House officials of politically motivated delays by the FDA in approving a vaccine and treatments for the disease caused by the coronavirus.Trump made the announcement on the eve of the Republican National Convention that will nominate him to run against Democrat Joe Biden. 1988
