As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, college campuses across the country will empty out. Tens of thousands of students will head home for the break, and public health experts fear mass travel and indoor gatherings could spark a super spreading of the coronavirus.Within days of returning to campus this fall, Brianna DeWall contracted the coronavirus.“We went out to party, and with all my friends, got it,” recounted the Oklahoma State University junior. “So, we're assuming someone at that party had it and didn't know.”According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the return to college campuses in August and September coincided with a 55 percent increase nationally of COVID-19 cases in young adults ages 18 to 22.Next week, DeWall is headed home for the holidays, but she plans to get tested before she travels.“I will be flying, so I feel like that's a precaution I should take,” said DeWall.While her school isn’t requiring mandatory exit testing, other schools are.Penn State is offering free, voluntary exit tests. The University of Michigan has made exit testing mandatory, and New York State’s university system is also mandating a negative test result for all of its 140,000 students before they leave campus.“Some people may get a test that's not going to decrease the risk to zero, but it is going to decrease the risk substantially,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.Dr. Adalja warns that without extra precautions like frequent testing, mask-wearing, social distancing, and self-quarantining ahead of the holiday, the risk of community spread is increased.“It is going to be a major challenge when you have your student body moved from campus back home and come back on campus because that's likely to introduce more levels of infection,” he said.Earlier this year, researchers at Ball State University tracked 7.5 million students at more than 1,300 universities and concluded that thousands of college students may have picked up COVID-19 while at densely-packed spring break destinations, only to return to infect others with the virus.Some schools like DeWall’s are not having students return to campus until January and have canceled spring break. But once again, testing is voluntary.“I think we should have to get tested before we come back,” said DeWall. “I think it's very careless that they aren't requiring us to get tested before we go home.”The CDC hasn’t issued any specific COVID-19 guidance on colleges and break, and while the American College Health Association encourages testing, it stops short of calling for it to be mandatory.“Colleges we know have been hot spots for infection, especially with off-campus activity,” said Dr. Adalja. “So, I do think this is going to be particularly challenging to accomplish.” 2839

You have to do quite a bit of homework, make sure no one is allowed in the center aside from your child and staff members, and review all the protective measures for your county and state.Things like temperature checks, masks and face shields are being required at some daycares. Experts suggest inquiring about ventilation and cleanliness. And get parent referrals. A lot of them.“What really is important is trust. You’re going to need to check off all the boxes of making sure people are cleaning, making sure air is really good. Instinctually once you make that checklist, you have to say as a parent, 'Do I trust these people with my most important thing which is my child,'” Schweikert said.There are some things that might be missing because of COVID-19, like parent and teacher visits. Some facilities like Lightbridge Academy are now reliant on electronics and in-center cameras.Green said she's confident in her decision. Her boys are happy and healthy every day, and she feels confident that she's successfully managing her career.“It makes me feel good to know that the daycare is actually practicing the appropriate safety precautions and wearing the appropriate protective equipment, take temperatures it is an added measure,” Green said. 3130

As the number of coronavirus cases continues to climb around the world and disrupts the travel industry, Princess Cruises has announced cancellation of early 2021 trips.“Due to restrictions and limitations with border and port access determined by government and health authorities and the continued uncertainty of airline travel,” Princess Cruises canceled about 30 voyages on two ships.The Island Princess, which stopped at ports around the world, and Pacific Princess, that sailed around South America and Australia, will not set sail until at least April, according to a release from the company.The cancelled voyages include a 111-day around-the-world from Los Angeles.Princess Cruises, which is owned by Carnival, is offering refunds or credit for a future cruise.Carnival Cruises has also canceled some 2021 voyages, and likely won’t return to full capacity until 2022.The cruise company is facing legal action for their handling of passengers when the coronavirus pandemic started this spring. AURORA, Colo. -- It’s a common work-from-home scam that has duped many, but this time it has a cryptocurrency twist.A couple in Aurora, Colorado who did not wish to be identified, shared their story with Scripps station KMGH in Denver about being tricked into laundering thousands of dollars, in order to keep others from falling for the scam as well. KMGH changed their names and disguised their identities to protect them. "It all fell apart so quickly," said John, who along with Marie, ignored the red flags all around them. "We don't want to go to jail. We laundered money and we stole money from people, that's what it could look like to someone."They thought they had found the perfect job: working from home as “financial agents” for a company called Golden Potatoes. At the time, never meeting their boss in person made sense because the company was headquartered out of state and the website looked legitimate.A Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesperson told KMGH she sees these schemes often, so does Krista Ferndelli with the Better Business Bureau."The contact information. The three people on the site, they may be actual people but they look very much like stock photos," said Ferndelli.The couple interviewed over the phone and received paperwork detailing the benefits, the salary and the company car. Marie was asked to send a selfie photo of herself holding her ID.John said his boss “Alex” instructed the couple to open up bank accounts. They would then receive deposits from customers who they believe were paying for a shipment of potatoes or olive oil."I felt like it was a prayer answered. Like honestly. This money was real," said John. “This money is legit. This is real cash. This is not a check. Nothing is bouncing. Nothing is being drawn to my attention. I’m going to Wells Fargo. They’re handing me ,000 in cash. They’re not saying anything to me.”They would then convert the money to Bitcoin currency and then send it back to "Alex." John and Marie would also get to keep 5 percent of each check, they were told."We hear a lot about Bitcoin because it's so new. People are uninformed and unaware. It’s hard to trace. It’s kind of the ideal payment method for fraud," Ferndelli said. The couple had processed close to 0,000 when the strangers started calling."One of the customers that was supposed to be paying for potatoes and oil says, 'where's my car?'" said Marie.John and Marie said someone posing as them on Craigslist pretended to sell high ticket items like an ATV or SUV and an interested buyer would pay for it.“The couple thought they had purchased an ATV for ,000 off of Craigslist and that, you know, I had sent them my information to confirm that I’m a real person and to put that money into my account.”The bank froze their accounts and unfortunately, John and Marie had mixed their own money into those accounts, too."We have no money because the bank took all of our money," said Marie.They contacted the FBI and local law enforcement. KMGH reached out to the FBI about John and Marie's case, but they wouldn't comment. KMGH also emailed and called Golden Potatoes, but received no response and were hung up on, respectively."I took the brunt of this. Average rates on long-term mortgages continue to fall to new record lows, as the key 30-year loan dropped below 3% for the first time in 50 years. The stagnant economic recovery in the face of the coronavirus pandemic is keeping inflation tamped down despite pent-up homebuying demand. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year home loan fell this week to 2.98% from 3.03% last week. These are the lowest levels since Freddie Mac began tracking averages in 1971. The rate averaged 3.81% a year ago.In their update, Freddie Mac says the low rates has led to increased homebuyer demand. Meanwhile, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, refinancing applications increased recently, about 12 percent in the last week. However, Freddie Mac warns that with an increase in coronavirus cases, the economy can stagnate and cause temporary job layoffs to possibly become permanent.
