A Memphis woman wants answers after getting a nearly ,000 dollar bill from Memphis Light, Gas and Water.Florence Ford said the utility insisted the astronomical amount is no mistake.They told her a water leak led to the 5-figure bill, but Ford doesn't think MLGW's story is adding up.The 60-year-old brings in just enough every month from disability checks to pay her rent and insurance costs."I had four blood clots, I’ve got nerve damage on the right side and I had a stroke," she said.So, when Ford opened up her bill late January for ,423, she was floored.Her normally bill had skyrocketed to ,995 for water alone, just for one month."What the hell? If I’m on a fixed income, how can I pay a ,000 water bill?" she said.Ford called MLGW and said she was told the massive bill was due to a water leak on her property, and that she’d need a plumber to fix it."Some pipe or something had come loose and they took care of it," she said.According to Ford's bill, her water usage during the month of December was 4,983 CCFs (centum cubic feet). That’s close to 4 million gallons, which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool almost six times.MLGW told Ford a representative called her and left a note on her door, but she said before getting that bill, no one from the utility ever reached out to tell her there was a problem."Didn’t call, didn’t leave a voicemail, said they left a note on the door. No note on the door," she said.A friend and former lawyer told Ford it would be impossible not to realize that much water was leaking in front of her home."He said if I had a ,000 water bill, my house should have been floating down the street somewhere," she said.Ford said she spoke to someone at MLGW again, who suggested she file for bankruptcy.The next month she got another bill, leaving her owing nearly ,000, which is just a couple hundred dollars shy of what she brings in in an entire year."If I don’t pay that, they’re going to cut my utilities off, so I’m going to be without utilities," Ford said. "What am I supposed to do? Sit in the dark?"She's also on a breathing machine, which needs electricity to operate.MLGW agreed to credit Ford’s account ,980, but she says that’s not good enough."I think they should squash it. A teenage girl deserves a major award. Not because of a winning horse show, but because of a winning chase behind a fleeing racehorse.One of the best racehorses from the 4H at Andover Farms broke free from her halter and galloped down Aviation Blvd during a 20-minute pursuit in Glen Burnie, Maryland.Sixteen-year-old Caroline Shoults was getting ready for her next class in the show when she heard the announcement regarding the runaway horse. Without hesitation, Shoults took a leap of bravery to chase her down."I live by this life quote, 'do for others as you would want to be done for you' and it has got me into quite the situation," said Shoults. "And I tried to control myself and just stay focused, I was about to walk in the rain, and I spun around and took off through the horses in the showground." Followed by two adults who immediately jumped into a vehicle to control oncoming traffic, Shoults aimed to steer the horse into a parking lot or off to the side of the road during the pursuit."I was not about to watch this horse right in front of me get hit by a car, injured, die, anything of the above."The horse finally tired out after a 3-mile run and stopped when Caroline was able to get a line around her.This young girl's bravery runs deeper than just doing the right thing. A third leading candidate COVID-19 vaccine has entered a final stage of human testing in the United States. AstraZeneca announced Monday its potential COVID-19 vaccine has entered final trials in the U.S. to test the effectiveness and safety of the product. The Cambridge, England-based company said the trial will involve up to 30,000 adults from various racial, ethnic and geographic groups. The potential vaccine was invented by the University of Oxford and an associated company, Vaccitech.AstraZeneca said development of the vaccine known as AZD1222 is moving ahead globally with late-stage trials in the U.K., Brazil and South Africa. A middle school teacher and former Miss Kentucky pageant winner has been arrested and charged with sending nude photographs of herself to a 15-year-old boy, authorities said.Ramsey Bearse, a 28-year-old teacher at Andrew Jackson Middle School outside Charleston, West Virginia, allegedly sent the photos to a former student, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.The boy's parents found the photos on his phone and told police about them last week. They said their son was a student at Andrew Jackson from 6th to 8th grade and that Bearse was a teacher there during some of that time, according to a criminal complaint.In an interview with police, Bearse admitted to sending at least four photos of her topless via Snapchat from about August to October, the complaint states.She is charged with four counts of distributing obscene materials to a minor, a felony.The former beauty queen has been suspended from her teaching position and was released on a ,000 property bond after her arraignment, the sheriff's office said.Bearse, who competed in pageants under the name Ramsey Carpenter, was named Miss Kentucky in 2014.She won the preliminary talent competition at the national Miss America pageant in Atlantic City for her fiddle performance, CNN affiliate WTVQ reported at the time. A San Diego teenager will use her family's Spring Break trip to Washington, D.C., to advocate for stronger gun control laws.Faith Campbell, a Sophomore at Frances Parker School in Linda Vista, already has a meeting set up with Representative Susan Davis to discuss gun reform. She also has a stack of hand written letters from herself and her classmates to deliver to other area Congressmen and women."A letter is really powerful," Campbell says. "It shows that someone took the time out of their day to write specifically to this person."Campbell says she wrote a letter to Representative Davis after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February. Rep. Davis wrote back asking is she would like to meet.Campbell took part in last month's March for Our Lives in San Diego, joining thousands of others to call for stricter gun control laws. But she says she doesn't want the momentum to stall now that the protests and marches are over.Now, Campbell is inviting all of her classmates and fellow teens to write letters. She says she'll deliver them while she's in DC."It doesn't really matter how many letters I get," she says. "It's just the fact that people are writing."She says she'll take any letter written by a teen if they can get it to her by this Friday, April 13th.
