(AP) — Prosecutors have filed eight new charges against a Perris father accused of shackling and starving some of his 13 children, alleging that he lied on government forms about their schooling.The Riverside County district attorney's office said Friday that David Turpin was charged with eight felony counts of perjury related to paperwork he filed yearly with the California Department of Education certifying his children were receiving a fulltime education in a private day school.John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office, said one charge was filed for each year the paperwork was completed from 2010 to 2017.Turpin and his wife Louise previously pleaded not guilty to torture, child abuse and other charges in a case that has drawn international attention since the couple's 17-year-old daughter escaped the family's Perris, California, home in January and called 911.Authorities said evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest sibling weighing only 82 pounds, and the children were shackled as punishment, denied food and toys and allowed to do little except write in journals.Turpin, who appeared in court briefly Friday wearing a sage green button down shirt and yellow tie, didn't enter a plea to the new charges during a brief hearing in Riverside. His attorney declined to comment after the hearing.The couple, who are each being held on million in bail, is due back in court May 18 and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 20.State records show Turpin listed the family's home address in Perris, California, as the site of a private day school.The children, who were removed from the home and initially hospitalized, ranged in age from 2 to 29. 1721

Robert Grays was having the game of his life on Saturday as his Midwestern State University squad was beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 35-13. The 19-year-old sophomore had matched a career-high with seven tackles, with his team about to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saturday ended up being Grays' final game.  With 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Grays went in for a tackle, severely injuring his neck. After being transported to Houston for treatment, Grays died on Tuesday from the injury. Grays was the squad's starting cornerback, and also played on special teams. Grays was a graduate of Fort Bend L.V. Hightower High School in Missouri City, Texas."We are saddened by the loss of Robert Grays, one of our own. This is not an easy time for anyone associated with the football program," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "He was a tremendous individual. I really believe he might have been the most popular man on our team."He always had a smile on his face. I never saw him have a bad day. He was an uplifting spirit for all of us. (AP) — The California Assembly said Monday it denied a former lawmakers' appeal of an investigation that found he sexually harassed a lobbyist in 2016.Former Democratic Assemblyman Matt Dababneh had appealed the finding that he likely pushed the lobbyist into a bathroom at a Las Vegas party and masturbated in front of her while urging her to touch him. Lobbyist Pamela Lopez publicly made the accusation against Dababneh last December and submitted a complaint to the Assembly Rules Committee, which hired an outside investigator.The Assembly Rules Committee told Dababneh in a letter dated Friday that his appeal was reviewed and rejected.Dababneh denies harassing Lopez and is suing her for defamation. Representatives for Dababneh did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Lopez said she hopes the Assembly's rejection of Dababneh's appeal encourages other women to speak out about sexual harassment."This decision is an important step to uphold fairness, accountability, and equity in the workplace," she said in a statement.The lawyer hired by the Assembly to investigate the allegation interviewed more than 50 people and reviewed relevant documents, according to the letters released by the Assembly on Monday.
