(AP) — Facebook says it has prepared new safeguards for the 2020 U.S. elections.The social media giant says the changes will help it better prepare to deal with candidates who prematurely declare victory or contest official results, as well as the possibility of voter intimidation by alleged — and potentially armed — “poll watchers.”It's also removing calls for people to “watch” polling places if the apparent goal to intimidate voters and election officials.The company will also halt all political advertisements once polls close on Nov. 3. On a lake in Bedford County, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officer Darrell Bernd, who goes by the nickname "Bones," has formed an unlikely friendship with a wayward goose.While on duty in July, Bones found the goose tied up in fishing line, unable to get free. He freed the goose from the fishing line and brought it back to health. A co-worker gave the goose the name "Honk.""Thirty-four years ago I was hired out here just to mow grass," Bones said. "Now, here I am babysitting a goose."The best Bernd can tell, someone had Honk as a pet that imprinted on humans before the goose's owner turned it loose, unable to fend for itself in the wild.Ever since he rescued the goose, the two have been like birds of a feather, with Honk now following Bones around wherever he goes."I've actually had him following me for almost a mile," Bones said.Starting Wednesday, Goose has become Facebook famous, with his own page on the social media platform.As a wildlife expert, Bones is encouraging Honk to hang with his friends in the wild. Honk has begun spending more time with a flock of geese near Bedford Lake, sometimes gone for days at a time. Bones wants to get Honk used to the wild, so he can live on his own.But while Honk is still around, he and Bones are teaching us all something about what's good for the gander."Just a little act of kindness, that’s all it took," Bones said. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A full-page ad published in the Sunday Union-Tribune is creating waves in the effort to save San Diego beaches. Save Oceanside Sand is a North County group who started about three months ago to help protect the beaches in Oceanside after decades of erosion. Co-founder Dirk Ackema tells 10News, “When that ad came out in the Sunday paper we were so excited, so surprised, so curious.” We did some digging and found out Christie Walton posted the ad. Not only is she an avid surfer and San Diego resident, she is the daughter-in-law to the founders of Walmart. Both Walton and Save Oceanside Sand have similar perspectives when it comes to saving the sand. They believe in installing jetties and backfill beaches to protect the sand. In the ad, Walton talks about the current dredging method as not being a long term solution for San Diego Coast. The installation of jetties and groins to protect coastlines has been used around the world. Walton even looks to the specific groin used in Hawaii as an option to be used here in San Diego. Save Oceanside Sand has grown traction throughout the community over the past few months and are looking to expand further now knowing Walton could be a major ally. 1229

(AP) — Authorities arrested a man suspected of shooting the security guard of a news crew that was robbed while covering the Oakland teachers strike, according to a statement by the CBS affiliate.KPIX said a reporter and a photographer were gathering interviews Sunday about the strike at the Oakland Library when a car pulled up and the driver pulled a gun, demanding their camera. The crew surrendered the equipment and began walking away.The suspect then shot the guard, Matt Meredith, in the leg, the news station said. KPIX reporter Joe Vazquez said on Twitter that the guard, a retired Berkeley police officer, exchanged gunfire.An Alameda County Sheriff spokesman says a 21-year-old man with several gunshot wounds walked into a nearby hospital after the incident. Oakland police arrested the man on suspicion of shooting the news crew's guard.The guard's condition wasn't immediately known.Assaults on routine assignments became so common in recent years that some television stations have hired armed guards to ride with news crews.No other information — including what time the robbery took place — was immediately released.It's not the first time the station has been the target of theft. In November 2012, a group of men punched a KPIX cameraman while he was filming in front of an Oakland high school and fled with his camera while it was still recording.Robberies of television news crews and still photographers have plagued the San Francisco Bay Area in recent years.The Associated Press tallied five robberies in 2012, two in 2013, three in 2014 and at least three in 2015 plus several burglaries of vehicles."We don't know what the market is for these cameras," San Francisco Police Sgt. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Dozens of people packed a room at Surfside Tap Room Thursday night for a well-known patron believed to have been killed in his home.John Roth, 77, was a regular at the bar. More than 50 people came to celebrate his life and drink a final toast.“He served in Vietnam, he was a topographer,” one of his friends, Tom Andrews said. “He crawled through rice paddies to make sure the maps had the right elevations.”“We had some intense conversations, but we would always end up laughing,” he added.Roth’s wife came home and found him dead Tuesday. Police say he suffered trauma to his upper body.
