SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Old Town San Diego bar and restaurant offered 22 cent beers for 22 minutes Tuesday to poke fun at burglars who stole .All 22 of the draft beers were discounted at Home and Away, 2222 San Diego Avenue, exactly 36 hours after the 3:07 a.m. break-in."Just the whole thing is extremely ironic and funny," said employee Jason Clay. "The comedic value I got was thinking about the time that they gambled with their life to get the amount that they did, and drilling that safe open and seeing the dollars that was in there. That's the best part."Surveillance video shows two men with baggy pants force their way into the bar Monday at 3:07 a.m. One tries unsuccessfully to pry open a cash register, then joins his partner in a back room where the two grab the safes. While leaving, they fumble the safes and nearly drop their drawers. Ricochet and Iverson were side-by-side when Ricochet decided to jump on the surf board.Since that day, Ricochet has surfed with and helped hundreds of kids, people with disabilities, wounded warriors and veterans with PTSD.Now, Ricochet is part of an organization that helps kids and adults with autism, special needs and disabilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the state of California, there were more than 10,000 sexual harassment offenses, as defined by California education code that resulted in suspension, expulsion or disciplinary diversion.A San Diego mother says her daughter was bullied and sexually harassed at school.“She said that he would take her pencils from her,” said Myiesha Jackson. “If she tried to get them back he would stick them down his pants."Jackson claims the male student didn’t stop there. She claims he took Play-Doh, made it into the shape of a penis and rubbed it on her daughter while making inappropriate sounds."I consider that sexual harassment,” said Jackson. An investigation report Jackson gave to Team 10 says the accused student admitted to rolling up the Play-Doh and holding it up while singing an inappropriate song that was sexual in nature, and the Play-Doh represented a male genitalia part, but the other student denied touching her with it.At the end of the report, it lists an action play, basically separating both students at all points of the day so they wouldn’t come into contact with each other.Jackson says that’s not what happened."The very day I brought her back she was in lunch, the line to get lunch, and they let him out of the office apparently, and he went and stood directly behind her,” she said.Magnolia Science Academy- San Diego denied 10News’ request for an interview.In an emailed statement an attorney for Magnolia Public Schools wrote:“State and federal student confidentiality laws and our organization's policy prohibit MSA-SD from commenting on specific students or incidents in which they may be involved.
